Yesterdays Tides
An exciting blend of historical mystery and romance. I enjoyed this story, and was drawn to it originally because we spent a lovely vacation on Ocracoke Island, thus the location was easy for me to slip into and imagine. I appreciated the authors inclusion of bits of Ocracoke history. We toured the cemetery dedicated to the British sailors buried there. I appreciate novels that include bits of actual history woven into the story. I also appreciated that the romance included in the story was sweet yet subtle. I appreciated the complicated family aspects of the story. The mystery element was well done, though I struggled some with the time-slip aspect of the story at the beginning. Towards the last part of the story, I could finally tie the two stories into one. I will look for more novels by Roseanna White. Write on Roseanna.

I will admit I was confused early on. There were so many grandmothers/aunts in this story I couldn't figure them all out. But everything became apparent as the story progressed.

I enjoyed both timeline stories and how they related to each other. I was delighted to see characters from Roseanna's other novels incorporated into this one. I hadn't realized how many of Roseanna's books I'd read until I saw all these beloved characters again. I loved how the intrepid group in room 40 banded together to help bring a satisfying end to this story.

If you like time-slip novels, romance, danger and intrigue, you will enjoy Yesterday's Tides.

Roseanna White is hands down one of my favorite historical fiction authors. I have read pretty much every book she's published, and so I was super excited when I was asked to be a part of her launch team for her new book Yesterday's Tides! I have been waiting for it since I read her previous book over a year ago, and I was amazed because she wrote another incredibly amazing book! This is book 3 of her Secret of the Isles series but you do not have to read those others to understand it at all! It is one of her best works yet!

The book begins in 1942, well into WWII, on Ocracoke Island in North Carolina. Evie Farrow, an island girl who helps her family run an inn that has been in her family for generations, finds Sterling Bertram, seriously injured and unconscious, washed up on her shoreline after a U-boat attack that wreaks havoc on Ocracoke. Evie ends up taking Sterling to her inn, and nurses him back to health, but does it cautiously as she has no idea who he is, or what secrets he holds!

Then the story goes back to yesterday, to 1914 where we find Remington Culbreth, an Englishman, who is vacationing on Ocracoke with his family, and who meets the beautiful island girl, Louisa Adair, who is the innkeeper's daughter at the family inn he is staying at, and he finds her fascinating!! He is only there for the summer, but a budding romance begins quickly between the two of them, but war is looming in Europe, which will prove a huge obstacle among others that they must overcome if they want to be together.

War wreaks havoc on all of these characters, but they are also dealing with problems in the south during those eras. Reading this book made me feel like war was just part of the story, but I realized that its part of my story as I have many great uncles and family members who fought in those wars for the freedoms I enjoy today, so reading this book gave me a glimpse into what they were going through. Also my son is married to an beautiful lady who is half African American, and in this story, both Louisa and Evie have similar blood, but the laws in the south at the time would have prevented them from marrying a white man, not to mention shutting them out from society if they did, and Louisa & Evie both have to deal with this. So I learned a lot, but am glad we live in the times we do!!

This book was so good y'all! I loved every moment of it. Every character felt like family, and I literally was glued to my chair because I wanted to finish it!! There were times when I was crying and laughing, and shouting "No!", but also many yeahs too! So I have to say READ THIS BOOK! ITS AWESOME!!

I have been so excited to read Yesterday's Tides since Roseanna announced that she was working on a book that would pull in all the different characters from her previous series (though you do not need to read those series first in order to enjoy this book, but it definitely adds to the story when you see a familiar character!)

This book kept me engaged and turning the page to find out what happened next. It is a dual timeline, with four POVs that flowed seamlessly throughout the story. I was more drawn to the story and characters in the "yesterday" chapters (1914). Their stories seemed stronger and more fleshed out than the characters of "today" (1942). But the yesterday and today characters and stories were intertwined to complete one, beautiful picture of the end of forgiveness and healing.

I do wish that there had been a little more development of some of the characters. Especially Sterling. He seemed the least developed and I wasn't sure of his motives or what was really driving him. Also, the "villain" of the past timeline felt off to me. Some of the choices seemed over the top and seemed to just be there to move the plot forward. The ending also felt a little rushed and I would have liked to have seen more there. Maybe an epilogue?

Every time a character from a previous book made their appearance, I couldn't help but smile! We saw several of the characters from the Codebreakers and Shadows Over England series, and mentions of characters from the Ladies of the Manor series and even Secrets of the Isles! These little easter eggs made the book even more fun for someone who has read all of White's previous works.

The last thing I will say, I did find the faith in this book had less depth than in most of her other works. Faith is there, woven throughout each timeline. But it didn't seem as powerful as some of her other books.

Overall, an enjoyable, historical mystery. I'd give it 3.5 Stars

This book was engaging and interesting to read! I have really enjoyed Roseanna M White’s books, but I haven’t really read a lot of her standalones so I was excited to try this one out. Yesterday’s Tides is a dual storyline historical romance
It was fun to read about the different couples and see how their lives were intertwined. There was so much going on and so much to keep track of. I was a little confused at the beginning, but I was able to get my bearings as I read more. The romances were cute and it was sweet to read about the characters falling in love.
I adored Rem and Louisa. Their interactions were just the cutest to read and I enjoyed reading about them falling in love. They both weren’t looking for love, but God had other plans. However there were a lot of obstacles that stood in front of Rem and Louisa. They had a lot to overcome especially since they were facing the start of World War I.
Evie and Sterling were also interesting to read about. They were set in a different time and yet they were also facing a war. It was fascinating to read some of the parallels in the story.
This story was such an intriguing story and I enjoyed reading it. The characters were endearing, I was cheering for them as I read the book. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen. I needed to know how this book was going to end. Both of the stories were so interesting and I love how they were woven together.
Yesterday’s Tides is a great book. I enjoyed the characters and the story! I would recommend it to those who enjoy White’s other books or those who enjoy historical Christian romance. Yesterday’s Tides is a clean historical Christian time dual storyline romance.

Two stories of war come together in an unusual way. I found at times this dual time novel was a little confusing with all the characters and their nicknames. I enjoyed the mysterious code breaking aspect. Evie was a favorite. The evil mother in law was quite a character but very realistic to the time period and circumstances. Interesting.

"Yesterday's Tides" is a Christian historical set in 1914 and 1942 on Ocracoke Island in America. Both timelines have a full story, but the mystery of the 1942 timeline was about the identity of Evie's parents. Since everyone seemed to be her grandma, aunt, or uncle (even when we knew those characters weren't related), it was sometimes difficult to sort out who was related to whom in what way. Still, you could follow the basic stories just fine.

In 1914, Louisa was poor, did the inn's handyman work, and wasn't sure if she had a black grandma. Remington's rich and visiting on a vacation, but he's intrigued by the beautiful, skilled Louisa. He knew that her ancestry and social status would make it hard for her to fit into his world, but he's attracted to her personality and character. She's also attracted to him, but his relatives will go to cruel lengths to keep them apart. As WWI begins, the war also threatens to separate loved ones.

In 1942, Evie lived in America but helped the British crack enemy codes by using the local Coast Guard telegraph for communication. When British spy Sterling survives a U-boat attack and washes up on her beach, she helped keep his secret and nurse him back to health. She agreed to help him track down an enemy spy (though they spent little time actually doing that). While Evie's willing to answer any of Sterling's questions about her life and past, he's determined to poke around instead and piece together clues until he can figure it out. When the Coast Guard brought Evie coded telegrams, he suddenly suspected her of being an enemy spy...who somehow managed to fool every local resident and Coast Guard into trusting her yet also was the Worst Spy Ever in terms of keeping her "enemy" telegram communications a secret. His belief that she was an enemy when all her actions pointed toward her being an ally made no sense.

Overall, though, the stories were suspenseful as the dangers of two World Wars and relationship tensions stressed the characters. I understood why Remington and Louisa were attracted, though Evie and Sterling seemed more like mild friends until suddenly they realized they loved each other. The characters trusted in God through difficult circumstances. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable historical.

I really enjoyed this time slip novel! Switching between WWI era and WWII time period with the same family of characters incorporates a thread of suspense throughout. Louisa’s strong character and dedication to her family was my favorite part of the book and I appreciated how carefully White handles racism and discrimination. The whole saga concludes with a wonderful ending that I would definitely recommend!

Roseanna M. White delivers a beautifully atmospheric split-time novel set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Set in both world wars on the seemingly remote island of Ocracoke, the lives of the townspeople and visitors to the island will be forever touched by the realities of war.

There were so many wonderful, spiritual quotes in this book that I had to highlight. Some of my favorites were, "She'd do what she could to make a life a little sweeter for the people around her. She'd live until she didn't anymore" and "She'd arm herself with prayer, like all the women in her life had taught her."

Yesterday's Tides by Roseanna M. White is an exceptional historical fiction book full of outstandingly complex and intriguing plots, well-developed and realistic characters, as well as stories of family, faith, and love that span two world wars and many decades. This book by Ms. White truly impressed me with how excellent it was. I have always enjoyed Ms. White's writings, but I think that Yesterday's Tides is her best work yet! There are so many good characters and small ways that Ms. White ties nearly all of her previous writings together by including her past characters into this work. It felt like a family reunion as each character from a previous work came to light and the web of family, friends, and co-workers became one cohesive unit. I absolutely loved the nostalgia Ms. White brought as the reader saw familiar and well-loved characters again.

Yesterday's Tides has quickly become not only my favorite book written by Ms. White, but it has also become one of my all-time favorite historical fiction books. If you are looking for a simple work of fiction, this most definitely will not fit the bill. Yesterday's Tides tells the tale of two women, separated by oceans, decades, and many obstacles. Evie Farrow lives on the small Ocracoke Island, part of North Carolina's Outer banks. Although the main front of the second world war is far from Ocracoke, there are still threats on the islanders from the German U-boats threatening any ships on the waters. Evie lives a simple life as she helps her family with the inn held by her family for several generations. When Evie finds Sterling Bertrand washed ashore after a deadly German U-boat attack, she is shocked by his severe injuries as well as his mysterious words and work. Is Sterling truly a member of the US military? Is he part of the intelligence community or is he fighting for the other side? Can Evie help keep Sterling alive and discover his true identity and purpose on the island? Will Sterling discover the secrets Evie is hiding? Who can be trusted?

Almost shadowing and overlapping with Evie's life in the 1940s, is the story of Louisa Adair, the innkeeper's daughter in 1914. Louisa helps take care of the guests of her family's inn and meets a kind young Englishman Remington Culbreth. Remington is looking for a summer at the small North Carolina island as a peaceful reprieve from his family's transcontinental drama, the pressures of the decisions he must make, and societal expectations. Remington was not planning on falling for the innkeeper's beautiful daughter, Louisa. As war looms and tensions arise in the different families, can Louisa and Remington's sweet love survive the frigid blasts from the cruel world?

Overall, this book is outstanding and full of complex overlapping between the two times and characters. I will admit that the first few chapters were required a slight bit more of attention than normal in order to follow which character was being focused on. I absolutely loved how the history of the time was woven in seamlessly into each character's timeline. Additionally, I especially enjoyed how intricately Ms. White brought each character's history into the overarching plot and the connections between the two time periods and characters. The balance of adventure, mystery, and intrigue alongside of romance, faith, and family brought to the reader's attention was perfect. I honestly have not read such a well-crafted book in quite some time. It takes a great author to create a book with a storyline that keeps her readers guessing and even pondering after they have finished the last page. I would very highly recommend Yesterday's Tides and I sincerely hope that you have the opportunity to read this excellent work! Happy readings!

I loved how well White meshed World War I and World War II. It was a seamless transition that worked beautifully with the story. I loved the characters. I ended up ordering a hard copy of this because I need to have it in my library!

Yesterday's Tides is a novel long ago imagined by Roseanna M White. I'm so glad this story has entered the world! I think it is one of, if not the best novels she has written. Set in mainly in Ocracoke, North Carolina and partly in England, the dual time line format is written in"yesterday' and "today". I found this a bit confusing at first as both timelines are technically in the past. You'll have to "train your brain" to be in 1942 during the "today" portion instead of 2022. The beginning was hard to keep track of, as there are so many characters, their names (in both timelines) are similar and often referred to by nicknames. But once you get it all sorted out the story will captivate and not let go! I liked the similarities between the female main characters (both innkeepers with secrets), which underscored the strength of family heritage and values passed from generation to generation. There were twists I didn't see coming, and at one point the characters from yesterday were in such a knotty problem that I didn't see how things were possibly going to work themselves out. The love stories from both timelines touched my heart. If you have been a long time fan of Roseanna M White you will be thrilled how this book weaves together with others from all of her previous stories. There was even a shout out to one of her funniest characters, Lord Sheridan. That made me smile. This doesn't mean that you need to read the others in order to understand or enjoy Yesterday's Tides, that is completely unnecessary. However, if you want to read great historical fiction stories, go back and read them after Yesterday's Tides! You won't be disappointed! I don't want to say too much about this novel, because spoilers! But I highly recommend it to fans of Roseanna M White, lovers of historical fiction and those who like clean reads.

Another wonderful story by Roseanna M White! This is the first of hers that is a dual timeline and though I typically thoroughly enjoy that genre, this one took me a little bit of time to connect with because the timelines were both historical and closer together than is typical. Due to my sporadic reading schedule, I found myself confused a bit early on. I'd say this could easily be combated by reading full chapters at a time and taking breaks with the timelines, which I didn't do. However, I say that to say that even if you do find the beginning a bit confusing, I'd encourage you to power through as once you get in to the depths, both stories fully suck you in. And because the timelines are close together and both historical, they tie up even more nicely at the end.

Both timelines take place in the Outer Banks on Ocracoke Island and the Ocracoke Inn. The "yesterday" timeline follows Louisa Adair who helps run the inn with her mother and Grann and her world is turned upside down when 2 young men show up for the summer. This story starts just before WWI and encompasses the duration of the war. The "today" timeline takes place during WWII and follows Evie Farrow whose life has hit a bit of a rut when a stranger washes up on her shore and changes everything.

Both story lines drew me in completely and all of the characters were likable and relatable. I enjoyed learning more about the wars from the viewpoint of the States and how people were impacted. The mysteries kept me turning pages, I enjoyed the romances in both timelines and the conflicts that arose within the families. I also enjoyed how Evie broke free of the family mantra at the end. There were quite a few twists and turns and surprises. I found myself angry with the author at one moment and singing her praises at the next. I enjoyed the faith thread that was solid throughout and enjoyed Evie's connection of prayers and sea glass. I'm considering doing something similar in my own life in order to keep my prayers front and center.

Fans of this author's other works will be glad to see characters from several of her previous series (Culper Ring, Ladies of the Manor, Shadows over England, and Codebreakers - as well as a small Easter Egg from the Secrets of the Isles), though if you haven't read them you won't be lost at all. This book is technically a stand-alone, but I love that she tied in several other characters that I've loved over the years. All in all, this was a wonderful book that I'd definitely recommend to fans of inspirational historical romance. Special thanks to the Publisher and NetGalley for an advance e-copy of this novel. Yesterday's Tides is a riveting tale of love, sacrifice, and trial. Although I can't say this is my favorite book by the author (The Number of Love will probably always be my absolute favorite), this one was definitely one of my top favorites. The storyline felt the most unique of hers, and I really loved the originality. The dual time lines (one set during WW1 and the other WW2) were easy to track with and I appreciated how the author made them distinct enough for me to easily follow along with. Also, each POV was so good, and I really loved getting to see the world, their circumstances, and explore their inner thoughts through their lens. This book was poetic and beautiful, and there were some scenes that made me think of some of my favorite authors, including Amanda Dykes, which is such a big compliment. The wording and the emotional weight it brought were just perfection.

If you love history and romances that are hard fought for and hard won and characters that tug on your heartstrings, then this book is for you. I loved it and absolutely will be reading it again in the future.

YESTERDAY’S TIDES by ROSEANNA M WHITE is a timeslip novel featuring two innkeepers, Louisa during Ww1 and Evie in Ww11 on Ocracoke island in North Carolina.
The characters’ emotions are well portrayed and we feel what they are going through in these very difficult periods of history. There is a strong feeling of family ties, whether by birth or by love as we see in the Adair family, as opposed to the snobbery, social prejudice and downright nastiness of Edith Culbreth.
Louisa and Evie’s stories are told against the background of secrets, code breaking and counter intelligence. There is also the emotional upheaval of wartime romance and a strong Christian message of hope in spite of the circumstances.

Exquisite. White’s best book yet! I have long been a fan of Roseanna White's masterful writing style, but this dual-timeline novel is a work of art. I was thoroughly engaged from word one, and the plot kept me guessing until the very end. I can't wait to read more!

I really liked this book!..
I loved the setting of the Outer Banks area and had no idea about the events that took place there. I did find myself looking up things from the book and most of it is spot on.
I couldn't put this book down! I spent most of the night finishing it up.
Roseanna has knocked this one out of the ball park for certain! She's a fantastic author and one of my favorites! I adore anything she writes!
I enjoyed in getting to the characters and this is definitely a sit on the edge of your seat story! Quite the entertainment!

Yesterday's Tides is a thoroughly engrossing historical novel. There's a lot going on here with 4 main characters (2 female, 2 male) and dual timelines. In my opinion, both timelines were equally compelling. The chapters are a good length, giving enough space and time with each character so that the reader settles into her/his world.

My one complaint is that this almost felt like two separate books. What I mean is this: each storyline could stand on its own and it's a lot to have them together. I do mean this as a compliment to the author's writing style. Each storyline is so compelling and rich. Perhaps it's my own bias in preferring a more streamlined approach in lieu of trying to pack everything into one narrative.

The author does a wonderful job at describing each scene and immersing the reader into the story's world. This would make a fantastic movie (or 2 movies :))! As a North Carolinian, I absolutely loved the setting and the details are so evocative and lovely. The idea of an inn is a great story mechanism.
