Great book!

Paul asked this question and so do most of us. I can have great intentions and still do what I did not want or plan to do. This is a book for your shelf so you can read over and over. Each time getting something a little different. I bought the audiobook so I can read and listen. I love to read and be convicted to be a better Christian. Thanks JP.

Love this book! The information that Jonathon mentioned made me aware of the things that are getting in my way in the way I walk with Christ. This book has definitely made me rethink and focus on focusing my mind on habits that bring me closer to Christ, and eliminating those that don’t.

JP has a way of communicating the truth of Scripture to the next generation in a clear and practical way. This book is a must-read for adult believers of all generations. It is filled with encouragement, prompts for application and hope.

What a read! So much truth shared in this book. I personally loved the chapters on busyness and rest, pride and humility, entitlement and gratitude, and authenticity the most but every chapter is filled with nuggets of wisdom! It is definitely a book I will come back to, and re read again. The book itself reads quickly but you definitely want to take time to chew on some of the things mentioned, and reflect. JPs little stories sprinkled within remind me of a Bob Goff book.
Loved this book!

I absolutely love everything Jonathan Pokluda writes. This book got to the heart of issues very prevalent in Christians today, including myself. If you’re looking for a way to deepen your walk with Christ, this is the book for you. It took me longer than some to read it, because he really calls you to action as he goes. I plan on recommending to to every Christian I know!

Prepare to be convicted, but not in a judgy way. JP is open, honest and shares with a vulnerability that I really appreciated. This is a fantastic read, I highlighted so many paragraphs and will definitely re-read. I loved the questions at the end of each chapter, and used some of them as journaling prompts.

Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley UK for a free ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Why Do I Do What I Don't Want to Do?

Haven't we all asked this question? I remember reading this verse for the first time in my teens and being shook to my core that some old dude in the bible so perfectly could capture what my soul asks itself.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian nonfiction but especially those in a questioning season or those who are looking to practice deeper discipline. This is a great resource.

Omg! This book hits home hard. Wanna know where you’re falling short? Looking to do better? This is the book. JP writes directly to the reader. If you’re looking for a feel good, sugar coated hypocrisy, this is not the book for you. This book is full of truth and you’d better be prepared to feel convicted. One read is not enough. I found myself wanting to read it multiple times, taking notes, highlighting paragraphs and preparing a bible study for it. It truly is a MUST READ

One of the best Christian books I have read. Very easy to read and interesting. It is not condemning or judging but it gives advice and real life examples from the author’s personal experiences. In this book JB is very open about his struggles which makes you feel less alone.
Overall this was a really good book I’d recommend it to everyone.

Answer these questions: What makes this book different from all others? And why should anyone care?
One of the pieces that I enjoy the most about JP's books is how applicable it is to every day life AND the fact that it can be read in a variety of settings. You can read the book on your own straight through, slow it down into a chapter-a-day, or a weekly small group read. He takes the time to break each chapter down so that you know what is coming and gives you time to pause partway through to answer questions to reflect on each section. I also appreciate JP's consistency between his books. While it can seem repetitive if you follow the content he produces on social media, his sermons, and the Becoming Something Podcast, I will admit that he does an excellent job of keeping each idea fresh.

Through humor and honesty, JP Pokluda covers common vices destroying Christians and virtues to combat them. The chapters on Pride & Humility, Anger & Forgiveness, Perception Management & Authenticity, and Drunkenness & Sobriety really hit home with me. This book challenged me and yet refreshed my Spirit, I can see myself re-reading this one. Highly recommend!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book was really eye opening. It was easy to read, but boy did it cover some difficult topics and ground, and JP did it SO well! I truly loved reading this one, and will be thinking over many of these lessons for a long time to come. I took tons of notes and scribbled scriptures and thoughts throughout my reading. I loved this and will definitely pick up more of his books!

Thanks to Net Galley for an advanced copy of this book to review. All thoughts are mine.

Jonathan Pokluda's Why Do I Do stands as one of the most refreshing, yet creative bodies of work that provides readers with invaluable knowledge on finding an awareness of their harmful vices while supplying both encouraging and effective guidance on how to overcome them. Why Do I Do's message shines a light of encouragement and support to the many cultural toxic mindsets and mentalities that many individuals learn subconsciously in the modern wars of society. Through reading Pokluda's newest work, Why Do I Do offers freedom and liberation to those who embrace the invaluable messages within its pages.

I was on the edge of my seat as Jonathan Pokluda shared the story of his past lifestyle of poor decisions and how knowing God changed all of it! From wild living to the everyday normal life most people think they lead, this book reminds us that sin creeps in. As he quotes “We cannot stop a bad habit. We can only replace it with a good one”, the big question is “And what should I do instead?” This is a great reminder of the importance of pursuing holiness and recognizing where we may have some habits to replace!

Laden with scripture, “Why Do I Do What I Don’t Want to Do?”offers practical advice on how to renew your mind, replacing vices with new habits that glorify God. It’s not an “instruction manual,” but encourages you to zoom out and look at the heart issue behind the vice. Each chapter is convicting, humorous—but full of depth—and relatable. The writing is down-to-earth and continuously points to the grace of Jesus Christ on the cross.

I always enjoy books that are relatable and practical, and Why Do I Do delivers both of these elements from start to finish while also moving your heart to follow Jesus more closely. JP shares so many great examples from his own life and his experiences with others to spark personal reflection on aspects of life that distract Christians today. Most importantly, JP shares practical, biblical ways to help combat these vices and move closer to Christ on a daily basis. The chapter on apathy really helped me in naming a feeling I'd had recently and gave me ways to fight back. Developing a better "diet" of Scripture and prayer has led me to desire those items even more instead of becoming lazy with them. There is something in this book for every Christian to glean and apply to their own life.
