This is a great intro book to pets (as the title indicates). Kids get both ideas for what animals can be pets and how to take care of them. Several vocabulary words and definitions are included as well. My preschool students will love this book as we are currently doing a pet unit. The art is also notably adorable!

This book serves as a great introduction to different kinds of animals that can be pets and some details about the care that they may need. I think it could have benefitted to have a few more details on some pages since some of these animals are given to children as 'easy pets' even though they have quite specific care needs that often get overlooked, cage/tank size for example look quite small in the illustrations and could give a young reader the wrong impression.

That said, the book does well discussing different types of animals and I appreciate that they pointed out that some animals are shy and some do not like being handled.

A great introduction book for preschoolers to talk about pets. It described what common pets are out there, and some of their needs. I loved that it discussed that picking a pet is a family decision, and showed a shelter as a great option.

Thank you to the publisher, and NetGalley for the eARC! A super cute informative text for young readers- this is a great way to introduce the concept of "Pets" to young readers. I like how the author makes it known that a pet is a family decision, and that pets are apart of your family. Simple pictures make it not overwhelming and I enjoyed seeing the facts about the different animals as I read. I also appreciated the diversity shown throughout the pictures.

This simple children's book teaches about house pets and how to take care of them. Using relatively simple language, large font and beautiful illustrations, the book is a great introduction to simple non fiction stories and offers information on a topic that is high interest and familiar for young readers. I think this would be a great book for children who are transitioning from being read to, to beginning to read with support. It is also my understanding that this book is part of a series, so I would imagine that means there are similar formatted books with a familiar layout and premise, making this series perfect for new readers to gain confidence while exploring novel texts. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book!

My First Book of House Pets is a cute and informative book for little ones on the importance of taking care of your pets. There are some fun little facts found on a few pages which children will love. As a nanny, I love quick and simple informative books like these that also include great illustrations. The other books by this author are also great but I do find that this book might be a little shorter then one of the other books, which I prefer because the child will stay engaged. If you’re planning on bringing a pet into your little ones life then I definitely recommend this book as an introduction to them.

“House pets are animals that can live inside your home. They can be big or small; furry, feathery, or scaly; or move slowly or very fast”

This story introduces readers to the world of pets from furry to feathered to scaled.

I read this with my almost 3 year old and 2 month old. My older son is an avid animal lover and loved this book. He loved the quirky illustrations and picking out all of the animals he recognized. I loved how informative the book was while still being at a level toddlers can understand. There is good diversity representation throughout the story, which I appreciated. I also appreciated that the book made sure to include that getting a pet is an important decision as well as pets being part of the family.

The only complaint I have is more of a warning. Your child may start asking for a pet or another pet after going through this book.

I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
This book covers common house pets from cats and dogs to reptiles and rodents. It covers the different things the pets like and need, where they best live, and how they are picked out.
This is the perfect book to get before getting a pet.

This is an incredible book for young children, especially if they want to have pets. This showed the different types or kinds of house pets and show a very child-friendly explanation of how these pets move, their basic requirements, etc. The illustrations are very cute alongside the colors and I think children will love reading and browsing this book.

My First Book of House Pets by duopress labs really is the prefect book for young readers interested in getting a pet or those interested in animals in general.

As a teacher, I loved the facts that were embedded into the story to help readers learn some "fun facts" about the animals. I also loved that visiting a local animal shelter was the preferred way of getting a pet in this story. The variety of pets was important too, loved seeing reptiles as pets (my personal favorite!). It is important that this book showed readers that having a pet is a big responsibility too!

Overall, a great book for a fun or informative read. I will be recommending it to the younger grade teachers in my school.

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebook Kids for this copy in exchange for an honest review.

A nice short introduction to house pets for very young children, around the age they're learning to read, with adequate illustrations and clear text that'll help them develop an understanding of what pets mean in terms of care and benefits as well as challenges. I wish there had been a bit more on the challenges, but I suppose it might've been above the target audience's reading and comprehension level.

Review come in June on blog/goodreads/etc..

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

I just couldn't resist this adorable book! That cover! And I loved that it was a First Book, I just love those.

HOWEVER, right from the first two pages.. I was not happy. 1) Goldfish DON'T belong in tiny fishbowls with just one plant. They need a big place to grow and be happy. 2) Hamsters need WAY more space than that, more spaces to hide, a toilet is also needed, multiple levels, and that FUCKING (I am so sorry but I get real angry about it) death trap of a wheel? BURN IT. That thing can destroy a hamster. Their little legs/hands can get stuck in it and I have heard tales about hamsters getting strangled/broken necks because they stick out their heads through the sides while the wheel is still turning.

That was not a good start and I was definitely not happy. I was definitely thinking what else is wrong here? Thankfully, the rest of the books seems to be better, however I am not sure if all those fish will cooperate together + again the hamster needs WAY more space (like at least triple that cage). Also again, no to the fucking wheel. Less room for breaking necks, but still plenty of legs/hands and parts getting stuck. Plus, they also need A LOT more ground stuff because hamsters LOVE LOVE to dig. At the moment one of mine is actually often found under the ground due to the cold (yes, we have the heating on for most of the day, but it is still a bit chilly).

But the rest of the book is pretty decent. And actually made me smile. I loved that it also showcased reptiles like turtle or geckos. And also showed some other birds than books often do. So that is a plus. It was really sweet and I loved the illustrations for the animals. I also love that it ends with going to the vet (very important) and that pets are part of your family and deserve all the love (yes, yes).

As to answer the final question, my favourite would be dwarf/golden hamsters. Followed by mice. Followed by dogs.

All in all, despite some issues I still had fun reading it and I love the choice of animals. Loved seeing the kids be kind to their pets. The illustrations were pretty and I love the colours. I would recommend it, but also make sure that you know that some things are not entirely right and make sure to discuss that with the kids

This book will definitely make the young readers quite happy and the one buying it a lot more happier because of the contents it offers!

It’s the illustrations that got my heart. It’s so well done! Kudos to the artists and the team.

The presentation is so well done. A picture book for introducing house pets with focus on the more common pets. Love it so much!

Thank you, SOURCEBOOKS Kids, for the advance reading copy.

As an animal lover who has had a variety of pets over the years, I appreciate that this author represented a variety of the types of pets that families can have. Not only that, but she also provided key information and vocabulary in ways that make it easily comprehended by children. This is all tied together with adorable illustrations that represent all families. I would gladly recommend this book to any library and family!

This was a really great book that teaches you about a lot of different options of house pets you cold have. There were also details included like what that pet likes and what the most popular ones are. If you have children this would probably be a great option to read. It could even be a great read when you already have a pet, as there is a mention of the vet and that all our pets need lots of love. A huge plus is also the inclusion of different ethnicities.
