Yoga by the numbers is a great book that delves deep into yoga philosophy and practice.

I loved the practice elements, thinking about yoga as larger than an asana practice. When talking about the number one and thinking about the creator, the idea of looking at the world like you’re looking through a kaleidoscope; to be connected yet disconnected at the same time, was really powerful. Noting the dualism Patanjali mentions, there is a connection yet disconnection between self and matter.

There were many great stories of the Hindu culture; when speaking about the number four, the author shares why gods have more than two arms so often. How we in the west are used to depictions of scientific anatomy, metaphors look beyond the numbers of the natural world.

One of my favourite moments in this book was a sentence that started with, “Each of us, as a miniature recreation of the universe,” since I loved this imagery. The author has an amazing way with words, to tie together these deep subjects with the reader.
