In a town full of bullies, it's amazing that Goff has managed to survive and is still such a lovely person. Despite the world trying to push him down, when he's needed he learns to be brave and wants to protect his town and his new friends.
Goff is astounded to find that he is next in a long line of magical ancestors. After many generations, history is repeating itself but this time he needs to make sure the outcome is not the terrible disaster that happened before.
The book is full of magic and mystery, and also courage and friendship.

I quite enjoyed this book , but fair warning, Even though it is marked as middle grade, I'd say the high end, because there is some SCARY STUFF in there. Souls getting taken, death, creepy things.
The story is exciting and well paced, and I liked the characters in it. There is a big bad guy that the MC Geoff and his friends have to defeat, and lots of action throughout. Thanks to Netgalley for the chance to review this ARC.

I got this book for my thirteen year old son and decided to check it out for myself. I thought the characters were fun and well written. Goff is definitely an unlikely hero, but that made him all the more charming. The plot kept me entertained and I found myself really enjoying it. It was a really fun Halloween story! I listened to the audiobook and though the narrator did a fantastic job!

Goff has never quite fit in at school or in his foster home. But when he accidentally becomes a wizard, he’s even more of a misfit. It falls on him to try and save his hometown when a dark wizard moves into town and attempts to become invincible. Can Goff overcome his self-doubt and his misfit magic to save his hometown and his friends?

I liked the premise of this work and the idea of the accidental hero with odd magic. However, I found this read to be a bit tedious overall and couldn’t ever become invested in the story.

The writing style was quite simplistic, which wouldn’t have been a big deal if the book wasn’t so long. Many things were spelled out in much more detail than necessary (e.g., why a character was feeling a certain way or when they were thinking through something) and drastically slowed down the story. So much happened in this book but at least a third of it did nothing to move the plot forward. On top of this, one of the characters took everything quite literally (think Amelia Bedelia) and spoke robotically – again, I liked the idea of this, but 378 pages of it made it get real old real fast.

The work also had a chance to address bullying in a meaningful and positive way, but that never really happened. Bullying, self-doubt, and making mistakes were a big part of the plot and main character. But near the end of the work, the bullying just went away. Same with the self-doubt. Since this is for a younger audience, I think this work could have been much more impactful if some sort of real resolution or introspection had been included relating to this topic. I do like that the work focused on the power of friendships and being kind

This work is targeted for younger readers, and I do think there’s a chance that many of the issues I mentioned above wouldn’t bother younger readers. However, the work is at least 100 pages too long, the ending was unsatisfying and seemed cut short (despite the length of the work), and I found it a chore to finish. My thanks to NetGalley and Bisket Press, LLC for allowing me to read and review this book.

Don't get fooled by the cover picture and the fact that this is a middle grade book into thinking this will be a cute sort of spooky story. It is spooky for sure but not completely cute....there is black magic, mayhem and murder involved! A lot of children die/get their souls reaped before Goff, the child protagonist along with his team of misfits, finally defeats the evil warlord. It is a fun, decent paced and well plotted story and one that middle graders will enjoy if they are into reading horror and spooky stories.

Colin Wats does a splendid job of narrating and bringing the story to life. There are quite a lot of characters involved and he manages to gives each character a distinct voice. The audiobook was a bit lengthy but listening to it didn't feel like a drag thanks to the lively narration.

My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Bisket Press LLC, and the author Fred Gracely for the audio Arc of the book.

After spending most of his childhood hopping foster homes, Goff has just started settling in a small town when he accidentally becomes a wizard 🪄 according to the plot in the book magic across the globe is scattered with different forms and people to maintain a balance. But a great old wizard is all power hungry and has started to accumulate all the magic to himself - in turn creating an imbalance. Standing as the sole competition to the great old wizard, Goff finds himself a kind of misfit with his recent entitlement of becoming a wizard. But Goff may now be the only thing standing in way of the old Wizard to reap all the souls and be a single source of power!!!

If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be whimsical. This misfit book fits perfectly into my ideal day of Halloween 🎃. I found the story light, and magical and the plot revolving around Halloween Night 🌃. Packed with all kinds of creatures like Gargoyles, Spider, Large snakes and a cute Dog 🐕

A great book that I would have loved when I was younger. It has a charming cast of characters that are very likeable, and the storyline was very fun.

If you are looking for a new golden trio this might be the one for you.

I constantly found myself thinking that this was an incredibly charming book and that I would have loved to have read it when I was a kid.

Goff is a great character who seems to be down on his luck from a very young age and even as the events progress I wondered when it would finally change for him, cause he deserves all the good things.

I really liked all the characters, I found them to be quite realistic and true to themselves even when the circumstances change. The magical characters are also, well, magical and I could picture every single one clearly.

I feel like you get all the best parts of a series in one book

Misfit's Magic is an entertaining debut which take setting at mysterious small city Sparkville with witch history. The audio did very amazing narration. I can feel the eerie atmosphere is flesh out from description of the city. Each characters standout and enrich my experience with the story.

The story it self following an orphan name Goff Grahm who suffer bullies and
plan to win a scholarship to boarding school. He is an underdog but the more we know him it is clear that he isn't weak. He weaponize himself with healthy dosage of sarcasm and witty banter. In the process he stumble to magic, found new friendship, and breathingtaking adventures.

I love children book and read it together with my kid. Specially the one with enough plot for satisfying older readers but not confusing the target age. This one delivered all of that. The writing is smooth and enjoyable to follow. The pace is good, loveable characters but the sparks of this story is the banter.
I think the swearing isnt necessary but overall this one is fun and perfect choice as new Halloween collection.

Thank you Netgalley and Bisket Press LLC for provided me with both copy and audio. I am enjoyed my time and my thoughts are my own.

This is a spooky, scary Halloween story of magic and wizards and the evil plan of a powerful villain. The friendships and school plot feel perfect for a middle grade story, tempered by genuinely dark and sad moments. People are in mortal danger and sometimes die. The main character is bullied at school and abused in his foster home. It's a very depressing setting that lacks quite enough whimsy or charm to offset the heaviness for a young audience. There's also very little resolution for the bullying situation; most of the kids just sort of stop bullying Goff, and then they all begin to get along - hooray!

On the more positive side, there is a lot of Halloween spookiness to enjoy. A talking black cat and skeleton, a graveyard, a Halloween deadline, gargoyles and decorations come to life - all appear in these pages, wound up in a story about friendship and kindness and learning what really matters. The cat, skeleton, and Goff's friends are responsible for the story's lighthearted moments. There are quite a few nods to Harry Potter (a chosen one going up against a strong evil villain, a trio of best friends, dementors, a huge snake, magical light shows) though the setup and actual storyline feel unique. Colin Wats does a really fabulous job with the audiobook narration, giving distinct voices to a variety of characters and making the entire story much more fun.

This is more of a Children’s book than YA, that being said it was spooky and fun, which would make it a great halloween read for any kids around 7-12. It’s a little trite and quite long for the style of book, but it has a nice moral to the story and is sweet and magical, as well as being relatable for kids.

Personally I found the narration a little too bouncy and ‘fun’ whereas it could definitely have been a little more creepy in places to add atmosphere. There was also some weird pronunciation. I felt like it would have fit the book better to have an American narrator rather than British.

This is a cute, middle-grade Halloween story, but I feel that it was too long, even when listening to it on audio.

I found my thoughts wandering quite a bit and had to drag myself back to the story. It was cute, but I liked a few of the characters. It's just not my type of book, the way I thought it might be.

This was an enjoyable, middle-grade read.

It’s about magic, being kind, and believing in yourself.

The book takes the reader and characters on a fun adventure that’s just exciting enough to keep the reader’s attention.

At almost 400 pages, this book is too long for the target audience. Recommend the audiobook due to the length of the book.

A cute middle reader magical adventure that proves adequately entertaining for the target age group.

Misfit’s Magic is a charming Halloween-ish story about a young boy who becomes a wizard and is tasked with saving the world (or at least his hometown).

Harry Potter this ain’t, but it’s sweet and mostly keeps your attention, though it’s slightly overlong for the target audience and type of story that it is.

I think this is fine for young readers, just scary enough without being too frightening and lightened with the kind of silly humor that plays well with kids.

For adult readers, it needed either more eerie detail and atmosphere (the story is disappointingly lacking in both) or a more unique spin on a standard fantasy trope to be truly engaging. While I thought the book was satisfactorily done, my mind wandered a lot while reading and I found myself hoping for something more atmospherically immersive to help boost a story that isn’t really anything new.

Audiobook readers: Again, stronger atmospheric writing and sense of place would have helped the book come to life more vibrantly (especially in this format), but the story itself lends well to the medium and the narrator does a fine job.

A highly entertaining tale of magic and hijinks. Goff, who lives in a loveless foster situation, accidentally becomes a wizard while doing research for a school assignment. Surrounded by bullies and indifferent adults, Goff and his misfit friends find themselves in a battle for not only their town but their very lives. Filled with quirky characters both alive and (un)dead, the reader is assured a rollicking good time along with reminders to treat others kindly.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for my copy. All opinions are mine.

This was a good story, but just not for me. I listened to the audio version so I don’t know if it was the narration or just me. Overall the story gets a boarder line 4 almost a 3 star from me. I might have to read this one in a few months and rewrite my review.

A fun but spooky horror novel. The cover had me think this would be a cozy horror novel but lord have mercy no, at least I didn't think so.

Amazon summary
Thirteen generations ago, Goff's ancestor stopped a dark wizard from performing an ancient ritual to become invincible. Now, due to magical laws, Goff is the only one who can stop the present-day counterpart from performing the same ritual in Spraksville on Halloween night.

It's a deadly, winner-take-all battle where one side has prepared for centuries, and the other doesn't have a clue.

My review
Great book, i really enjoyed reading this book. The world building was great and I loved the characters. A great starter by book for kids and young adults, wanting to delve into fantasy.
