I did read the books out of order but didn't seem to make a difference except in her personal life story. Maddie is asked to look into the parents of an adopted teenager. There is not much to go on since the adoption was private so all information was sealed. It was a lot of work to get very little information. But was that ending a twist or what!! I liked the story.

Set in New York City, the main character, former police officer Maddie Landon, gets more than she bargains for when sixteen-year-old Samantha Bennett hires her to locate her birth parents. What starts as a seemingly straightforward investigation takes a sharp turn as Samantha's adopted father vehemently opposes the quest, hinting at hidden truths that could shake the foundation of their family. This is a thrilling exploration of identity, family, and the consequences of buried secrets.

Thank you to NetGalley, BooksGoSocial and author Ellen Shapiro for the opportunity to review the advance copy of this book.

This is a really good whodunit book. Had a little bit of everything, and the characters were very compelling. Just went a little slow for me, but other than that great book.

Buried in the Attic is a PI mystery and psychological thriller by Ellen Shapiro. Released 22 Sept 2022, it's 354 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free.

This is a new character, in a presumably new series. The author is quite adept at character development and protagonist PI Maggie Landon is tough and intelligent, but also relatable and compassionate. When she's approached by a young adoptee, Maddie decides to help. She's an adoptee herself, and agrees to take the case which is anything other than straightforward.

The plot arc is controlled and well measured; there's a distinctly thriller-ish vibe in many places. The characterizations are believable (in some cases all-too-sadly-realistic)

Four stars. Engaging and satisfying read.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

The premise of this book looked so intriguing. Unfortunately I found the writing a bit drawn out. I struggled to finish this one.

I feel that this book was missing a lot of details. It had a lot of potential to be a great read. More needed to be added to the story. I do like a mystery from time to time. This one just didn’t have it for me.

I have mix feeling about this book, I want to love the book as it has a lot of potential yet I feel not so connected to the story line. there is a lot of description about the characters that I felt could have limited.Private eye Maddy Landon is approached by a 16-year-old, Samantha Bennett, to trace her biological parents. Maddy being adopted herself she wants to help the 16 year old. When Maddy realize that her client's mother appears not to have met an accidental death. Maddy wants to find the truth for Samatha and also find closure to her own story. Overall it was a good read. thank you netgalley for giving the opportunity to read this book.

When private eye Maddy Landon is approached by a 16-year-old, Samantha Bennett, to trace her biological parents, she is leary. Maddy is damaged having learnt that she was adopted too: isn't Samantha's plight a little too close to the bone? And why is her adoptive father so opposed to the idea of this search.

Landon soon realises there are skeletons on the cupboard to be unearthed. Some more dangerous than others, when she realises that her client's mother appears not to have met an accidental death.

The investigation takes on the tone of a whodunit, as Maddy Landon kerps on diggi g. It seems there are plenty of candidates possessing the motive for wanting Samantha's unfortunate mother out of the way.

It seems that certain qualities are necessary for those who pursue Maddy's line of work, those involving a thick skin especially - digging up unfinished business often means upsetting a lot of people. And the murderer seems to be less than shy about murdering again to cover their tracks. Then there is the wheeling and dealing with ex colleagues for favours regarding information, who fall just short of asking for something more intimate in return. A lady ex-police officer's lot, if not a happy one, is certainly not always a comfortable one....

Maddy Landon, a true bloodhound, feels she owes it to Samantha to deliver, in the process, also perhaps being in a better position to get to the truth of her own history.

This was a highly satisfying read, and certainly does not bore - those pages kept being turned, although it was not as difficult as all that to guess at who the killer was. Worth checking out.

This had a lot of potential for a great book and it was good if you can get past all the added bits that didn't add to the story, I like getting to know a character but this was a bit much.
I did enjoy the story overall otherwise I wouldn't of finished the author has a great concept here and I will be keeping an eye on this author for future books.
Thank you to Netgalley/Bookgosocial/Ellen Shapiro for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Fast paced and an easy read, however I feel like there where things that was missing or that it needed to be in series for more details.

A classic “whodunnit” with plenty of great characters to lead the reader through the mystery. I enjoyed the way the author described the setting and would recommend this to people who enjoy a classic mystery.

Buried in the Attic
A Fast-Paced Murder Mystery
by Ellen Shapiro
Well, this was indeed a FAST-PACED Mystery. It was non-stop one thing after another. Just I felt it was missing the mark for me. More back story, more breathing room, a slower pace into this insanity. I did finish and felt overwhelmed at the end.

I’m not sure how I feel about this book. On one hand, I liked the premise, but I wasn’t too taken with the main character Maddie Landon. While she eventually solved the case (and I found that interesting, if predictable), she just seemed to flop around. There was also far too much personal stuff. I didn’t enjoy reading about her past conquests or her relationship with sweets and other food items.

Overall, I remain disappointed with the novel.

I want to thank NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for forwarding to me a copy of this book for me to read and review. The opinions cited in this review are solely my own.

Way too fast paced. The flow was not there in the slightest. This book was advertised as fast paced, so I guess I cannot be too mad about that because I got what was advertised, but I could not get into it.
