Joyce Carol Oates never disappoints! Her ability to construct a creepy and shivery narrative that leaves you guessing is showcased in this new thriller.

In 48 Clues, the beautiful Marguerite has disappeared. Her sister Gigi is surprised but unsure on what took place - did M leave on her own or was she taken? As G continues to tell the story more is revealed on her true feelings about her older sister. While it may seem that the answer to the disappearance is told early on - there is much more to learn.

If you like a claustrophobic creepy read, a potentially unreliable narrator, or just love the genius ability of Joyce Carol Oates to spin a contemporary tale, 48 Clues into the Disappearance of My Sister is for you!

It has been a long time since I have read anything by this author. And while this was an interesting book, I am still not sure what actually happened. I would be very interested to see this book in print form. It seemed to me like the author was doing some interesting things with how the text looked on the page, but some of that was lost in the ARC digital form.

A superb fast paced thriller. I absolutely loved the story and couldn’t stop reading it. It’s perfect for all readers, especially thriller lovers.

First, I want to thank NetGalley for gifting me the advance reader copy of this book and make it my first one!

I would lean more toward 3.5 almost 4 stars for this book.
Joyce Carol Oates has a very interesting writing style that I’m not used to so it took me a bit to get into and wasn’t sure what I was reading.
Early on it seemed like the mystery was solved and that it was just reading a descriptive telling of G’s feelings toward her missing sister M. (How the names are referenced quite often).
But the reason I’m leaning more toward a 4 was because once I started to understand the authors unique writing style I enjoyed it very much. Filled with suspense and guessing what’s happening next! Everything I love about a thriller/mystery!
I would recommend for a fun quick thrilling read!

This was an ARC. Thanks to NetGalley.
This was my first book by this author and it was just not for me. The story may have been a good one but the writing was way too tedious and odd for my liking. DNF

The case was solved quite early on. The rest of the book was bleh. Boring and seemed pointless. Not my up of tea.

I've not read a Joyce Carol Oates for awhile but recall they can be...quirky. This one definitely was! It seems 'solved' quite early in the book and you are just observing the strange tale after that. Not my favorite although definitely a unique storytelling! The title, is fabulous, and thought this might be a real mystery as the 48 clues are revealed but in actuality, I don't even know how many clues there were (or anti clues as she refers to some of them).

Joyce Carol Oates is a unique and talented writer, but unfortunately I couldn’t get into this book. This was a DNF for me.

My friend once told me that she doesn't trust beautiful people because they have it so much easier. Georgene, the young heroine of "48 Clues into the Disappearance of My Sister," by Joyce Carol Oates, talks about her sister: "Her beauty, that was unjust. For all beauty is unjust." Then she goes further: she hates her sister Marguerite, a gorgeous, silvery-blond woman, a sculptor teaching at the local art college. One day, M., as Gigi calls her, disappears from her family's stately seven-bedroom, five-bathroom English Tudor, where she lives with her sister, their father, and Lena, their housekeeper. The prints of her Ferragamo boots on the path outside and a white, silk Dior dress on the floor of her room may be the first clues, but they don't help much.

Georgene is not pretty. She's often rude, her remarks snide, and her work at the post office boring. Always jealous of all the attention people paid to M., now she feels revenge for "no revenge without jealousy, they struck match." For the first time, she has been noticed: an artist involved with M. becomes interested in her, the ugly younger sister!

The allure of literature is strongly connected with the diversity of characters and situations. Even if the novel's protagonist is someone I can't relate to, she or he can still be fascinating. Georgene may not be everybody's friend, but her attitude changes throughout the novel. Eventually, Marguerite has been missing for 22 years. From a reluctant observer, her younger sister evolves into someone seeking answers. She becomes Marguerite's protector, quickly uncovering the people who try to use her sister's disappearance for their benefit.

It took me about 20 or so pages to become interested in the novel – this is the first person's narrative, from the often unpleasant Georgene's point of view, written similarly to a memoir – but once I got interested, I loved the author's style. With an unexpected conclusion, it's a different kind of thriller - a study of one woman's character.

Difficult to get into this one, I don’t know why.

48 Clues into the Disappearance of My Sister by Joyce Carol Oates- I found this book to be a difficult book to read, the format was off-putting and made it a chore. Hard to say this about the author's writing of course, but I could not get into this book. Thanks to Netgalley for an advance copy.

Hmmmm I'm not to sure about this book?! It was a decent read but I guess not really my type of read?! It seemed very, I guess stuffy?! Is the best way I can think to say, the storyline was just weird for me?! I guess it just wasn't for me! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!

Gigi is trying to find out what happened to her sister, Marguerite, who has disappeared from her home in a small town in New York. At a glance, this would be another thriller about a woman desperate to find a missing loved one, but these two sisters have a much more complex relationship than one might expect. Gigi has always been envious of her older sister, who is prettier and seemingly loved by all who know her. Readers soon realize that Gigi is not compelled by love to find her missing sibling, but more like something very close to hate. An unusual thriller with a main character who’s hard to empathize with, this was a bit of a slog for me
