Description, i.e., the blurb …
In the small-town Missouri setting of Promise Lodge, widower Lester Lehman is finally doing so much better. His life has found purpose. He lives in a *real* lakeside tiny house. But there are these two Amish ladies who decide they need a man — they want Lester! That alone makes for some comedy. Both of those women are so — to me it was more important for each to beat the other one — Lester was just icing on the cake.

New to the Promise Lodge community, Marlene Fisher is protective (for good reasons) of her grown brother Mose. She has dealt with several men and none of it ended well. But Lester … he’s different and she finds in Lester, a friend. Both of them need the friendship that grown. But will it grow into more?

My review …
While “Family Gatherings at Promise Lodge” is number 6 of the Promise Lodge series, it can be read standalone. I have read and enjoyed several of the books in the series. But this one did not grab me. It was easy for me to lay my Kindle down and do something else. One of my personal pet peeves is reviewers who glow about a book. Use words like captivating, lovely, couldn’t-put-it-down, etc. — then give it four stars or even three with no reason why. Well, I’m in a tough spot because I’m having a difficult time stating now — I started reading on Feb 21st & finished it on Nov 20th — why I didn’t find this a “good read” — for me, at least.

I enjoyed so much the two biddies who were determined to marry Lester. You’ll chuckle if not laugh out loud at some of the things they try. And maybe that’s it … nothing after that part of the book matched the fun of those silly women. And personally, I was being challenged by some health issues that went on for months. I missed several of NetGalley’s “publish” deadlines.

I do think I would have had the same reaction; i.e., letdown after the ridiculous widower chasing. I know other readers and reviewers did not have and will not have the same reaction. How Marlene cares for Mose — and Mose loves his sister in return — is a nice approach to a trauma incident. There are, of course, recurring characters but my favorite is the Bishop. Promise Lodge is an Old Order Amish community. He is the kind of bishop I would like to have if I were Amish. He IS Amish — BUT he uses COMMON SENSE. A good example is the use of the “tiny house” (an Englisher tiny house) by an Amish resident. Promise Lodge is a new community. Homes are being built but it takes time to build them. So the bishop understands why it is being used right now. There are no snide remarks such as reminding the resident this is only temporary.

Even though I have missed the NetGalley feedback deadline for “Family Gatherings at Promise Lodge”, I am completing my “NetGalley” review anyway. So if you are an Amish fiction fan, try the Promise Lodge series.

I received a complimentary DRC (digital review copy) of “Family Gatherings at Promise Lodge” via NetGalley” from the publisher, Kensington Books, Zebra. A positive review was not required; the opinions expressed are entirely my own.

This is the first book I have read by Charlotte Hubbard and I will definitely be reading more. I was intrigued by the glimpses of the Amish community and the twists and turns of the novel.

I was drawn quickly into the story and found it hard to put down. I enjoyed the interactions of the characters and the closeness of the Promise Lodge community.

What a dilemma for Lester. At times it was comical in the way the two woman, so opposite in appearance, tried to outdo each other to gain Lester’s love. But, it was sad a s well, that they couldn’t see how inappropriate and ridiculous their behaviour was.

Faith and forgiveness, love and friendship were all threaded throughout the story. We learn much about the Amish community as well and with that, many instances where wise words are shared, especially by the religious leaders. Yet, it was not a heavy-handed portrayal of this faith.

As Lester and Marlene’s friendship develops, we see the strength of both characters and the struggles they have had to overcome.

I highly recommend this novel. This was the sixth in the series and I am eager to read the rest of them. (5/5 *)

Family gatherings at Promise Lodge is a good read for patrons who like Christian books. It is also a good read for
YA readers. It is a heart warming story that gives good advice to the character that works in real life.

Family Gatherings at Promise Lodge is the sixth book in the series. I’ve only read Star of Wonder, which is included in the anthology, An Amish Christmas Star and is a connected story. I am looking forward to reading more of the books in this series as well as more books by author Charlotte Hubbard.

Set in Missouri, we meet up with characters who I’ve learned about before, along with new ones.

This is Lester and Marlene’s story. He’s a widower, and she’s never married and never plans to, but plans can change, can’t they?

Marlene and her single twin brother moved from Coldstream to Promise Lodge to start their new lives once their parents passed away. They still have a connection in Coldstream, and it brings back many unhappy memories for them. I liked their twin relationship and how they looked out for each other.

Lester and Marlene have an attraction each time they meet, which is easy to do in such a small town. Their paths cross all the time! Most of the story is heartwarming and exemplifies the community’s Amish goodness and the desire to help others. I love how the lodge welcomes everyone. Their businesses are essential to their small town and others in the surrounding towns.

There are some characters who have forgotten the tenets of being Amish and add a darkness to the story, along with the bishop from Coldstream, who thinks he knows best and doesn’t let others forget it. The story has a happily ever after, but the book ends abruptly.

I enjoy Amish stories, especially when they sometimes deviate from their humanity and straight and narrow path to add a bit of angst and human tendencies to the tale.

I rated the book 4.5 stars but rounded to 5 stars here and on other sites.

Charlotte Hubbard keeps bringing us wonderful stories from the people who live and work at Promise Lodge and the surrounding area. Widower Lester Lehman is in trouble with a capital T. He is helping prepare for a family wedding and the gathering brings two guests he wants to run away from, potential brides for him!
Marlene and Mose, adult twins from Coldstream move to the lodge during the gathering to become part of the Amish. They are two characters I liked right away. They have had drama in their lives and want a new start.
Family Gatherings at Promise Lodge is another true-to-life fiction work that demonstrates there can be good and sinful in any community, even one comprised of Amish and Mennonite citizenry. As I read, I saw jealousy, greed, disreputable beings, along with God-fearing, sweet, caring people. For example, the colorful Kuhn sisters are back and active in this book.
I received this advanced reader's copy from the publisher and NetGalley. This is my unsolicited opinion. I have really enjoyed this series from the start. The characters and circumstances feel real, and I easily get absorbed into the drama and heart sweetness of Charlotte's stories. She adds great humor to counter-act the drama and serious matter of each book. The romance stories of older couples are enjoyable to read about. I look forward to many more Promise Lodge books.
There could be a trigger with an attempted rape scene. It is not graphic.

This a such and enjoyable book. I loved reading about Lester's trials and troubles. Everything worked out wonderfully for him in the end. Please write many more Promise Lodge book Charlotte! This series leaves me wanting to know more and more about the people of Promise Lodge.

Oh what fun to return to our beloved Promise Lodge Community. Made up of both Amish and Mennonite, it shows how even with differences we can learn to live, help, and love one another. This 6th book is no slacker in showing the love and mayhem that can befall Promise Lodge. Lester Lehman lost his wife and son in a tragic accident. One year later he is settling in to his tiny house and enjoying life again as he helps build the new mercantile. Vowing to never marry again was his first mistake. When the celebration of two weddings at Promise Lodge bring two very persistent women, will Lester be able to avoid their charms? Add in new comer, Marlene Fisher, who intrigues Lester with her quirky quips, and we have a case for havoc. Believing she is to never marry, Marlene finds Lester's predicament as amusing. Will her belief of never marrying be her downfall as well? Or does God have other plans for Marlene and Lester? I absolutely love this Promise Lodge and the loving but quirky characters that live there. I look forward to the next book. I received a copy through Netgalley. I review was not required.

I always enjoy returning to Promise Lodge. I feel like I'm visiting family! This trip is for weddings. Romance both wanted and unwanted bring some smiles, laughs and some tears as situations arise and the community comes together to end the tears and celebrate the weddings. Love this community!

This is such a delightful book. It is a quick read that I did not put down until I had read it all.

This book, taking place in Promise Lodge, Missouri, is part of a series by the author, but the first I have read. I will definitely try to find the others. I loved the loving characters in this book and the Christian principles throughout the book.

This book centers around widower, Lester Lehman, who lost his wife and son in a buggy accident and new resident Marlene Fisher. Former neighbors of both of these characters create a lot of havoc with each of them. Lots of drama, forgiveness, love, and laughter are in this book. I highly recommend it for those who love Amish books.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and Kensington Zebra books. The opinions expressed are my own.

When the right two people marry for love, there's nothing more liberating and nothing that can stand life's trials better than two souls becoming one.

Marlene Fisher along with her twin brother Mose have moved to Promise Lodge. With the death of their parents, they desire a new start at Promise Lodge. They have found good friends and new opportunities, and Lester Lehman. Lester Lehman has dealt with loss himself. The death of his wife and son has sent him on a journey for simplified living. Living in a "little house". He has become more reflective in this change but his life takes a turn when two women come to Promise Lodge to make Lester their husband. These two women are loud, obnoxious and not very Amish while they fight over Lester. Lester has his eye on Marlene or at the very least is intrigued by her. The two women make it interesting and entertaining.

What I liked about this Amish Romance was the loyalty of Lester. He was pursuing carefully Marlene thoughtfully and grew to learn more about her. Her insecurities, her fears, and her dreams. I had a difficult time connecting to Marlene. I will just leave it at that.

A special thank you to Kensington and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

This is my favorite Promise Lodge novel yet! It makes me want to go back and read the series from the start.

I've always enjoyed how Hubbard writes Amish fiction from a feminist perspective, and the Promise Lodge series is the finest example of her work. The Bender sisters left their former community because of an oppressive bishop, and the continued success of their Amish community at Promise Lodge is a testament to the love, faith, and friendship that flows through every aspect of their lives. That's why it is such a riot to see Agnes Plank and Elverta Horst create such havoc as they pursue Lester. While the residents of Promise Lodge have faced adversity, they don't often come across such antics. And the way the Promise Lodge community considers everyone's feelings as they deal with the issue is a true display of their beliefs.

With Family Gatherings at Promise Lodge, Hubbard provides fans, new and returning, with a fabulous story grounded in faith that brings two people together who thought love was in their past. And proving she is not afraid to tackle tough issues, Marlene's story is both heartbreaking and thrilling.

Hubbard remains one of the most masterful storytellers in the Amish fiction/romance genre. I look forward to spending more time with the Promise Lodge community.

This was such a sweet Amish romance, with great characters, and a beautiful setting. I absolutely would not want to be in Lester's shoes! Marlene was such a fun character, and it was clear she and Lester were meant for each other, even if they didn't realize it at first. The rest of the characters were interesting, and I would love to visit Promise Lodge and see it in person, it sounds so beautiful. The story itself moves along smoothly, with moments that will make you smile, and ones that will make you giggle. As expected, faith is woven into this story, but it doesn't feel overly heavy despite this being a religious romance. If you're looking for a sweet, clean romance with a charming cast, unforgettable setting, and a bit of faith, you're going to love this one!

I enjoyed Family Gatherings at Promise Lodge. This is part of a series but can be read as a stand alone. He author does a wonderful job reintroducing everyone and their story. This is Lester’s story and newcomer Marlene. A fun and heartwarming Amish read. Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Book/Zebra for the E-ARC. This is my own opinion.

Family Gatherings is the latest book in the Amish Promise Lodge series by Charlotte Hubbard, and it's another home run for her! In it, you'll be re-acquainted with old friends and introduced to new ones. The two main characters in the book, Lester Lehman and Marlene Fisher, have both experienced losses in their lives. Lester lost his wife and son in a traffic accident, and Marlene's ailing parents have both died. She's also been engaged and broken up, three times. Will Marlene learn to trust again and become more than friends with the steadfast and understanding Lester? This is a must-read for all Charlotte Hubbard fans! I would suggest reading her other Promise Lodge books first to get the full story. This book releases Feb 21, and I'm happy to say that there will be another book coming out in this series at a later time.

A big thank you to #NetGalley and #KensingtonBooks for an advanced e-Pub of this book.

Family Gatherings at Promise Lodge by Charlotte Hubbard is a charming Amish tale. I was happy to return to Promise Lodge. It is a friendly, welcoming community that is comprised of Amish and Mennonite. Many of the Amish who reside at Promise Lodge escaped the bullying bishop from the Coldstream district. The newest residents are no exception. Marlene Fisher and her twin brother, Mose have lost both of their parents. They are eager for a fresh start at Promise Lodge. The siblings hope to avoid Bishop Obadiah while they clear out the family home. Marlene does not plan on marrying, but God may have a different plan for her life. Family Gatherings at Promise Lodge is the latest Promise Lodge novel. While it can be read on its own, I recommend reading the series in order. It will allow a reader to get to know the characters and the community. I have enjoyed seeing the community grow and prosper. I was hoping the author would write Lester Lehman’s story after reading New Beginnings at Promise Lodge. I thought the story was well-written with steady pacing. I like the realistic and relatable characters. Marlene Fisher is a great addition. She is a kind, thoughtful woman who is always willing to lend a helping hand. She is also spunky. Marlene’s twin brother, Mose is a gentle giant. An incident from his childhood has caused Mose to avoid crowds and people whom he does not know. I laughed often while reading this story thanks to Agnes and Elverta. Both women have come to Promise Lodge determined to win Lester Lehman. Their bickering did get on my nerves a little, but it was overshadowed by their entertaining antics. Faith was nicely woven into the story. I like how Easter and its meaning was incorporated into the story. It is a good time to take stock of your life and forgive those who have caused you harm. Faith, hope, and forgiveness are the key messages in the story. The author does touch on a difficult subject that some people will find uncomfortable. I thought the topic was handled beautifully. I like how the romance progressed between Lester and Marlene. I like that Marlene and Lester were able to have candid conversations. The delectable desserts mentioned will make your mouth water. There are recipes for some of the tasty treats at the end. I hope there will be many more stories in the Promise Lodge series. Family Gatherings at Promise Lodge is an inspiring and witty tale with a kindhearted newcomer, wrangling women, a shy sibling, convivial nuptials, a bullying bishop, and a caring community.

Another delightful story about Promise Lodge. I love the interactions between Amish and Mennonite. A lot of funny parts with the two old friends vying for Lester’s attention. It all works out for the best in the end. I loved this book.

Promise Lodge, an Amish Community, with the addition of new residents, has become a loving, helpful community of peace of quiet. That is until Lester, a widower is visited by two women from his past and an agenda he isn't ready for.

The story has a lot of twists to it and many humorous instances. But then it has it's sorrowful and upsetting circumastances as well. This is one of the best Amish stories I've read. The author's descriptions of the setting transported me to where the characters appeared real and I felt the warmth of community coming together.

The characters are well-developed with many layers. A sweet romance evolved as two people learned about trust, forgiveness and the ability to love again. Highly recommended.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and voluntarily choose to review it. All opinions are my own.

Entertaining and Inspiring

Family Gatherings at Promise Lodge was quite an enjoyable read. It follows Lester Lehman and Marlene Fisher as they begin a friendship under some amusing circumstances, according to Marlene, but not so amusing, according to Lester. Regardless of its beginnings, as they spend time together, their friendship takes on a different course which is not the smoothest due to some very insistent characters and issues from their pasts. As I turned page after page to see where it would all lead, I was kept captivated by the humor, a bit of intrigue, and the candid conversations between Marlene and Lester which gave much insight into their struggles and backgrounds. My palate was captivated as well by the many delicious desserts that were throughout the story, and I was very much pleased to see that some of the recipes were added at the end. However, I was especially captivated by the messages of forgiveness, faith and hope that were key elements throughout the story.

On the flip side, there was one topic that although the author dealt with it flawlessly, some might find a little disconcerting. However, it was key to the story and added much to the elements of forgiveness, faith and hope. Having said that, I found Family Gatherings at Promise Lodge to be an entertaining and inspiring story that should not be missed.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book. All comments and opinions are voluntary and strictly my own.

I love being back with these now familiar characters, the author's description of the lodge and and the surrounding acres makes me want to live there. Such kind and loving folks, and most go out of their way to help others.

We are given Lester Lehman, a man I had my doubts about in the last book, but this time, my heart goes out to him. We are also given not one, or two, but three possible matches for him.

There is some drama here, and possible danger, but also some humor, and justice, and you will be page turning for answers, and yes, they do come. When the last page is turned I really wanted to continue in the lives of these people in Coldstream, Missouri!

I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Kensington, and was not required to give a positive review.
