Halloween in Black Rock Falls, could anything be creepier? There is a serial killer in town. This one is going for a very special kind of victims. Naturally the serial killer has many screws loose, and the logic behind the killings is pure insanity.

Another great add to this fabulous series! I love how I have gotten attached to the characters, and most importantly the dog, in this book. The characters are so vivid, and they all have quite heavy backgrounds, yet they are very much down to earth - well, everyone except the serial killer.

Warning to widows: be afraid, be very afraid😳

3.5-4🌟 stars
I was a little disappointed by this addition to the Alton and Kane murder mystery series. I'm used to lots of action and physical danger from the stories in this series. This one seemed to concentrate on psychological bad vibes and vague references to military secrets and Medical Examiner Wolfe and Deputy Kane's super secret past and connections. There are suicide/potential murders to solve and the team goes to the extreme organizing to catch a dangerous hunter of military widows, but I just found this one lacked a little of the fast-paced excitement I was expecting. Usually author D.K. Hood's pacing keeps me glued to the story; this one less so.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

This book feels like watching a television show aired around Halloween where everything goes bump in the night. Not saying this is a bad thing though. I found it made it a rather fun and interesting read. The fact our main character, a tough female in law enforcement has a healthy respect for the possibility that ghosts do exist was refreshing and realistic. Often authors don't want to assign such a superstition to their characters and cops can sometimes be made out to be unaffected by much. That wasn't the case here. Also the pacing was spot on and had me flipping the pages.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy.

Yet another brilliant thriller in the Kane and Alton series, it just keeps improving. Set on Halloween night, we have tension, ghosts and thrills as well as the usual fast paced chilling read. Great developing characterisation along with excellent plotting, makes for another 5* read from the author. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

Another brilliant crime thriller from DK Hood.
It’s great to be back in Black Rock Falls and it’s Halloween so this one is a bit creepy.
A woman is found dead by her friend and at first it looks like suicide, but Wolfe soon determines that she has been murdered.
She was due to go on holiday the next day to put the anniversary of her husband’s death out of her mind and her friend knows she did not kill herself.
Another woman is soon found dead and is linked to the first victim as her husband was in the same team sent to Afghanistan, but none of the men came home.
Kane and Jenna start the hunt for someone with a military background and know it will be hard to find the killer.
This is a gripping crime thriller with some creepy moments in old secluded houses.
I love this series and can’t wait to read the next book.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Chase Her Shadow, the seventeenth novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane of Black Rock Falls, Montana.

Willow Smith is dead, found lying peacefully in her bed with her husband’s purple heart pinned to her chest. Suicide or murder? It is seven years since her husband was reported MIA, believed dead, in Afghanistan, so was her pain too much? Medical Examiner Shane Wolfe thinks murder and the death of another widow from the same incident a couple of days later confirms it.

I thoroughly enjoyed Chase Her Shadow, which is a tense, exciting read with added spookiness as it is set at Halloween and the widows both lived in remote wooded areas. The basic premise of the novel is fairly standard for the series, another serial killer roaming Serial Killer Central as Black Rock Falls has become known, but this one feels very different. I think it’s because there is no anger or savagery and, somehow, that makes it more chilling. Given the military connection you could say that he’s mission orientated, although quite what that mission is is unclear until the denouement.

I have very little imagination so I didn’t really gel with Jenna’s nerves and jumpiness, in fact I found it slightly annoying and out of character, but I think it is well done and that it will unnerve many readers. That aside, I was glued to the pages as it’s one event after another and there’s precious little time to breathe right up to the end. The final confrontation scene may not be as violent or heart stopping as some in the series, but it still packs a punch in a more psychological way. It’s quite disturbing.

Chase her Shadow is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

A very interesting read. I really liked Sheriff Alton and Deputy Kane as partners. Good characters, good ending. A book I would recommend.

There are taunt moments in this new book by D. K. Hood. Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane have become involved in several deaths of war widows. These widows were all wives of soldiers that were killed in Afghanistan seven years ago. Desperate to find the killer before more wives are killed, the terror continues and even Jenna feels the eyes of evil staring at her from the dark forest. Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for this chilling read. The comments and review are my honest opinion.

Can you say creepy? Wow! I am always ready for a new Kane and Alton book. I love this series and all of the characters in the series. They have caught so many serial killers in Black Rock Falls in recent history that they pegged the town "serial killer central". The mood is spooky and eerie as it is Halloween in Black Rock Falls, and women are dying after being mentally tortured for days by someone claiming to be their dead husband. At first it appears that Willow (the widow of a soldier who was killed in action or is assumed dead) has died by her own hand, However, if you have read any of the Kane and Alton series, you know that Wolf will not settle for cause of death as it "appears". He quickly determines that she was, in fact, murdered. The action and suspense really amp up after this scene as Jenna and Kane quickly realize there is a lot more to the story. Jenna wants to believe in the spooky stories, but Kane keeps her on solid ground and assures her that the only "ghost" they need to worry about is a live one who is killing women for pleasure.

The characters in this book and this entire series are beyond awesome. They are highly intelligent, brave, well-trained and fearless. They are not your run of the mill small town police force. Their relationship with each other plays out well in each story. I have read so many of these books that I feel as if I actually know them personally.

D.K. Hood is very good at leading you down one pathway and then switching gears. The shock factor is a specialty for this author. The timing of this book being set at Halloween makes the freak factor and scare factor even more prominent in your mind. After all what is more scary than a mad man on the loose who is a true predator? I stayed up late into the night to finish this one because I had to solve the mystery even though I was a little freaked out reading this mystery in the late evening hours! I just could not put it down.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Another suspenseful, spooky read in this long-running series! Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane are on the trail of a new serial killer targeting military widows. The story is full of red herrings and creepy details, this is a book to be devoured!

It’s Halloween in Black Rock Falls, what could possibly go wrong? 😂
Another brilliant read in this series. A very clever main plot, the unexplained deaths of widows of a group of Marines MIA in Afghanistan. A very fast paced read, I read this in less than a day.
The subplot has hints of some disturbing things to come and a tease from the beginning too.
Number 17 and still as fresh as a pie from Aunt Betty’s. I’m so looking forward to the 18th slice

Detectives Kane and Alton #17

It's Halloween in Black Rock Falls and Sherrif Jenna Alton and her Deputy David Kane are called to a small lodge on the outskirts of town. Jenna is devastated to find the body of Willow Smith, a military widow whose husband went missing in action and has been presumed dead for years. Her breath catches in her throat when she notices the heart-shaped purple medal on Willow's pale chest. Desperately chasing sown every lead, Jenna learns that Willow has been receiving silent phone calls in the dead of night. Witnesses say Willow thought her missing husband was trying to make contact.

Jenna and Dave are investigating the murders of the wives of SEAL team members who were MIA whilst on active duty. Set around Halloween makes this story even more creepy. Whoever is killing these women are making it look like suicide. Someone is preying on these grieving women. As always, this is another well written and great addition to the series. I love all the main characters in this book. Jo Wells and Ty Carter have their parts to play, although not so much Ty in this edition. I love visiting serial killer central, and Halloween is the perfect setting for it.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #DKHood for my ARC of #ChaseHerShadow in exchange for an honest review.

Halloween has Jenna Alton on edge - and in the serial killer capital of the United States - this is not a good thing. To compound this unease, Jenna and her husband/deputy, Dave Kane, are called in to investigate the murder of a military wife whose husband was most likely killed in action. This investigation continues to snowball as another wife whose husband was in the same platoon is found dead. Kane and Alton know there's more to the story and call in reinforcements. As always, D.K. Hood crafts a well-written and intertwined story that is entertaining to read - and leaves the reader so bummed that the story is over. :-) Thank you to Bookouture for an advanced reading copy of this book - the opinions expressed are my own.

I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Chase Her Shadow’, book 17 in the Detectives Kane and Alton series written by D K Hood, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane are called out to what must be their scariest case yet when they search for a killer who’s terrorising widows in Black Rock Falls and leaving their late husbands’ Purple Heart medal with their bodies.

‘Chase Her Shadow’ centres around Halloween as widows are enticed to their death on the anniversary of their husbands going missing in action while fighting for their country, and has such a spooky story that Jenna is scared into believing ghosts actually do exist. You’d think that by book seventeen Ms Hood would run out of ideas, but oh no, the story is just as sharp and exciting as the previous sixteen books in the series, and with an abundance of drama, suspense, action and twists and turns is just as enjoyable. It’s good to finally meet up with Kalo the FBI’s technical expert who, along with Special Agent Jo Wells, gets involved in their search for a dangerous killer. I’ve loved every minute of this thriller and haven’t been able to stop reading. I can’t wait for the next one.

I hate to repeat myself with these reviews but…another astoundingly great tale from D.K. Hood. The twists and turns come like a roller-coaster. Emotional, fraught with danger and action…the tease of a life changing event for Jenna was just a tease…but maybe a hopeful glimpse to the future. Never saw the culprit coming…finally meeting Bobby threw me for a loop…nothing like I pictured in my head…at all…lovers of the Kane and Alton saga will not be disappointed!!

Cancel everything and tuck into this the latest in the Kane and Alton series. Another fantastic five star read from one of my favourite authors. This read had me sat on the edge of my seat, constantly holding my breath and tapping my kindle like a demented wood pecker. Only came up for breath after I had turned the last page. Chilling, gripping, abhorrent and bloody terrifying all in equal measures. Much more than five stars and another MUST READ from this very talented author.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
