THE PRINCESS BRIDE: THE OFFICIAL COOKBOOK • Jenn Fujikawa • Pub Date: December 8, 2022

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for an eARC in exchange for an honest review. For transparency's sake, I am an amateur who is certainly no authority on cooking, baking or cookbooks. I was raised on "The Princess Bride" though.

This was everything I wanted and then some when I requested this eARC. The recipes were easy to follow, even for someone with limited experience in the kitchen. Most importantly, each recipe carried the wit you'd expect from anything TPB themed. The creativity involved in planning these dishes is just as clever as the movie.

So, what can adventurers expect when flipping through this cookbook? First off, there is a delicious spread for every meal, ranging from "Triumphant Drinks" to "Valiant Desserts". There is even a "Swashbuckling Snacks" section, with vegan and gluten free options. I am looking most forward to trying out the "Momentous Soirees" section though, specifically the "Thieves' Forest Happy Hour" and "Married Couple's Stay-at-Home Date Night". Because believe it or not, my fiancé has never experienced the gift that is "The Princess Bride" so I intend on going all out with an immersive viewing and dining experience.

The next standout are the pictures. Of course, all cookbooks should have photos of the food that amateur chefs like myself are praying that our dishes will resemble, but this cookbook does us one better. We also get pictures from the movie itself! My appetite and nostalgia know no bounds. Readers will also be delighted with well-timed quotes from the movie and foodie descriptions that prove storytelling is just as much in cooking as it is in film.

This cookbook is likely not going to be what you pull your everyday meals from, but it will spark joy. The meals themselves are bound to be delicious, and there is an essence of humor and gimmick that really fit the theme. I mean, just imagine serving R.O.U.S.es (Rolls of Unusual Size) for the family. There will be just as much laughter as there will be fully bellies!

The Princess Bride has a special place in my heart so I appreciated a cookbook about it! I enjoyed the recipes (and their names!) and the photographs interspersed. I like the addition at the end with the menus for different events.

I an unable to review this title, as it was archived before I had a chance to download and read it. This feedback is only to stop this title from adversely affecting my net galley feedback rate. If in the future I have the opportunity to read this title, I will post a proper review here.

Being a real princess bride fan, I was excited about this title but it felt like a let down. The recipes seemed really silly and it had a lot of movie content included but not enough connections with the recipes. I might buy this for a fan as a goof or funny present but not as an actual cook book that someone could use.

Jenn Fujikawa’s The Princess Bride: The Official Cookbook is an excellent collection of fun and approachable recipes.

Confession time: I have never seen the movie! But, after this cookbook, I am ready to whip up a feast and have a viewing party! Fujikawa makes the movie and these delicious recipes so fun and accessible. Her easy-to-read writing is light, witty, and fun without being cheesy.

This excellently organised book is divided into chapters on Enchanting Breakfasts, Gallant Lunches, Adventurous Dinners, Swashbuckling Snacks, Valiant Desserts, Triumphant Drinks, and Momentous Soirees. I love the creativity and range of delicious dishes. I also love the creatively named goodies and how perfectly they relate back to the movie! There is the Most Likely Kill You In The Morning (aka eggs in purgatory which is a spicy egg, tomato, and feta concoction!), Mostly Dead (seared tangy tuna steaks with two kinds of sesame seeds!), and Bonetti’s Defense (juicy beef sirloin kebabs). I am fascinated with the uniquely lovely Princess Crown Breakfast Tart which features a baked granola crust and and an array of fresh fruit. There’s even a healthy and herby Queen of Slime salad dressing which can also be used for vegetable dipping!

Desserts range from the easy Bread Pirate Roberts (a hearty bread pudding of ready made croissants and chocolate chips) to the slightly more difficult Farm Fresh Pie (a rich custard pie) There are cool drinks like Sea Water (a creamy combo of sparkling water, blue curacao syrup, and sweetened condensed milk) and the beautiful purple sangria Inigo Montoya’s Taste of Revenge. I especially love the book’s final chapter which gives us set menu ideas for our special occasions. I love the extra attention because Fujikawa doesn’t simply write up possible menus but instead, interestingly and briefly sums up the dishes and neatly relates them back to the movie!

The recipes are clearly-detailed and easy-to-follow. Each recipe begins with a brief and interesting write-up which usually details important aspects from the movie and relates the dish back to it. I love the approachability of all the dishes! Although several of the recipes may require a little more effort, all the recipes in this book are very doable for even the most amateur cook. I love that all the dishes contain fairly inexpensive and very accessible ingredients like potatoes, dry red wine, and ground beef. The most elusive ingredients are saffron threads and dashi granules but these items appear infrequently and can be found in specialty stores. I also appreciate the focus on fresh ingredients but I like the use of convenience items like croissants and frozen pie dough. I also like that Fujikawa labelled the gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan recipes.

The book’s clean, simple, and elegant design nicely supports the recipes. I like the added touch of featuring dialogue and scenes from the movie. Several of the recipes have simple but lovely full-colour and full-page pictures. I really would have liked to see more pictures of the finished dishes because there are far too many movie pictures. However, I can’t complain too much because the movie pictures are fun–there are even cute behind-the-scenes ones!

I can't explain to you how much I love this. The Princess Bride has been one of my favorite movies for a long time, so this cookbook just makes me smile. I enjoyed the layout, with the text and photos from the film interspersed with the recipes. The recipes have super cute names and I do really appreciate that they're marked as gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian where appropriate. From what I've tried, the recipes are pretty easy to follow as well. I think I'm going to need to go get a physical copy of this one!

Thank you to Netgalley and BenBella Books for a copy of The Princess Bride: The Official Cookbook.

My only regret is that I wasn't able to make any of these recipes before reviewing this book. So, instead, I'll comment on the style and presentation of the book itself. I loved the recipe titles and their punny throwbacks to the movie. There's also a large collection of full-colour pictures from the filming of The Princess Bride throughout the recipes and they do a great job of creating the right atmosphere.

I will be buying a copy of this book for myself, as well as one for my sister (The Princess Bride is her favourite movie ever) and we'll be making a ton of these recipes for get-togethers and events in the future. A great read and I have no doubt that the recipes are equally amazing.

I adore the sound of the dishes in this book. As a long time fan of The Princess Bride, I was initially excited by the cookbook centered around the movie. After reading it, the recipes hold their own in the relationship. There are different recipes for varied skill levels of cook, tasty ingredients, and quirky, fun names for the dishes! My friends and I are already planning a The Princess Bride Dinner and Movie Night! Outstanding!

I shan't lie. I got this in the belief this would be awful as how often are franchise tie-ins anything but? I was pleasantly surprised though. It captures something of the book's wit, has lots of excellent photos, and has a diverse array of interesting recipes. Am I likely to use their paella recipe over the ones I have from Spanish cookbooks? No, but I wouldn't go wrong using it. Besides, this one isn't aimed at cookbook junkies. It's aimed at The Princess Bride junkies. When I mentioned this book's existence, I got one friend earmarking it as a present for their sister who is exactly that. For that audience, this will do exactly what is needed.

The Princess Bride: The Official Cookbook is a lovingly crafted tome of breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and desserts (not to mention the swashbuckling snacks!) that playfully parodies and pays homage to the 1987 classic romance/adventure movie.

There is a lot to love here for fans of The Princess Bride. Peppered throughout are full-color stills from the movie (even some behind-the-scenes shots!), quotes, and, of course, every recipe playfully ties into the movie. The first thing I did when I opened it was scanned the table of contents in search of the shrieking eels (yes, they are there, and no, the recipe does not feature actual eels).

I read this book cover to cover in one sitting and my absolute favorite part was the names of the recipes. “Farm Boy Breakfast”, “Mawidge Meatwoaf”, and “Anybody Want a Peanut?” were a few of my favs.

To quote Miracle Max, “Sonny, true love is the greatest thing in the world, except for a nice MLT – mutton, lettuce, and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe.”

Yep, there is a recipe for an MLT too!

The table of contents clearly labels Gluten Free, Vegetarian, and Vegan options. There are only three vegan options that aren’t drinks, but a number of the recipes could easily be made vegan with some basic adjustments. Many, but not all, of the recipes have pictures of the food.

For the most part, the recipes seem to be fairly easy to cook. There are some fancier, more time-consuming dishes under Dinners, but a lot of the recipes are variations on things you’ve probably cooked before (meatballs, breakfast hash, beef skewers, etc…). The “Most Likely Kill You in the Morning” breakfast appears to be a tasty variant of one of my favorite (and easy to cook) middle eastern dishes, shakshouka.

If you’re a fan of The Princess Bride buy this book. If you know someone who is a fan of The Princess Bride buy them this book. If you have never seen The Princess Bride go watch the movie, then buy this book!

The Princess Bride: The Official Cookbook
Author: Jenn Fujikawa
⭐️⭐️⭐️

This would be a fun novelty for someone who loved The Princess Bride - it has some behind the scenes photographs, film trivia, and quotes throughout. Unfortunately, the book just relies on punny names for the dishes, but the recipes just are boring and uninspiring - which is not great if you're making a cookbook. I wish there were more photos of the food instead of so many movie stills.

As a cookbook this really isn't a useful book, but if you're a superfan or collector of The Princess Bride then it could be a fun book to have.

Thanks to NetGalley, BenBella Books, and Jenn Fujikawa for an advanced copy of the book. All thoughts in this review are my own.

“Sonny, true love is the greatest thing in the world… except for a nice MLT. Mutton, lettuce, and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomatoes are ripe. They’re so perky, I love that.” – Miracle Max

I admit it. I have a weakness for fandom cookbooks. They tend to be over the top whimsical, pun-laden, and filled with pictures. There’s a heck of a lot of them out there pairing food and wit with movies, television shows, books, comics, games, characters — yes, Hello Kitty has a cookbook — and even those mouse-based theme parks. Whatever you’re passionate about, you are likely to find a themed cookbook to feed your fannish hunger.

Back in the early 90s, this reviewer contributed recipes to an unofficial Northern Exposure cookbook, which we titled Canned Moose. It was never distributed beyond our little band of merry mooseketeers, but that creative experience left me with a permanent appreciation for fandom cookbooks.

The Princess Bride is a movie beloved by many, of course. With such a huge fan base, it’s no surprise that this isn’t the first cookbook based on the movie to be published, but I believe it’s the best. It excels in not just the quality of content, but also in the professional polish given to the editing and layout. (One previously published cookbook which shall remain unnamed was unable to stand up under the weight of its typos and grammar gaffes. Even the TITLE has a typo.)

But Jenn Fujikawa has got it right. There’s a playful joy and brightness to her cookbook that’s lacking in other attempts. The recipe titles are wonderfully clever (Six-Fingered Sandwiches, Anyone Want A Peanut?), delightfully punny (Hash You Wish, Bread Pirate Roberts, Have You The Wing), and convey the story (Inigo Montoya’s Taste of Revenge, Two Wove’s Kiss Cookies, The Grandson’s Soup and Sandwich). The food photography is outstanding – even Miracle Max’s Miracle Pills are displayed on plates so pretty I wish they were mine.

What I’ll be trying first: R.O.U.S.es – Rolls of Unusual Size. These are fresh-baked bread stuffed with savory ham and cheese and decorated to look like a rodent. What could be better?

Once I purchase a packet of butterfly pea flower powder, I’m going to whip up an “Inconceivable” color-changing drink. Before reading this cookbook, I was unfamiliar with butterfly pea flower powder (try saying that fast five times). A quick google search taught me that it’s readily available, easy to use, and apparently delicious. I appreciated learning about a new-to-me ingredient.

After the recipes, you’ll find menu plans for picnics, parties, happy hours, and intimate date and movie nights to help you enjoy the cookbook to its fullest. And once the party is over and you’re happily fed, there’s only one thing left to say…

"Good night, Westley. Good work. Sleep well. I’ll most likely kill you in the morning." – Dread Pirate Roberts

My thanks to author Jenn Fujikawa, BenBella Books, and NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital review copy of this book.

4.75/5 stars! This cookbook is the perfect combination between sweet and useful. It was memory-evoking and drew me back to my childhood when I saw "The Princess Bride" for the first time. I loved how little quotes and sections of the film were pulled into this cookbook. I think this could be a great way to get the next generation of movie viewers into the kitchen with their parents to cook.

I received an advance review copy for free through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily

The Princess Bride: The Official Cookbook by Jenn Fujikawa features more than 50 recipes for dishes seen in, and inspired by, the film, including: Buttercup Buttermilk Scones, Hash You Wish, Farm Boy Breakfast, Six-Fingered Sandwiches, Chips of Insanity, MLT, The Grandson’s Soup and Sandwich, Vizzini’s Sicilian Meatballs, Fezzik’s Stew. The Spaniard’s Paella, Bread Pirate Roberts, Twu Wove’s Kiss Cookies, Iocane Powder Punch, and Inigo Montoya’s Taste of Revenge. Perfect for fans, families, and Brute Squads, this cookbook is a way for home cooks to plate up the adventure, comedy, and romance of everyone’s favorite film.

The Princess Bride: The Official Cookbook is a fun novelty cookbook. It has some good recipes with punny titles. I liked the movie quotes, pictures, and information that was included in the text as well. Most of the recipes are ones you can find elsewhere- with a title change. However, I did like that they were labeled, both in the table of contents and at the start of the recipe, for if they were gluten free, vegetarian, or vegan and sometimes included suggested modifications to make it vegetarian if it was not in the recipe. If you prefer metric measurements, here you are out of luck and will need to do some conversions since it is all in imperial units.

The Princess Bride: The Official Cookbook is exactly what it promises- a cookbook for fans of the movie that might want to put together a pun filled meal (or series of meals) to share.

This cookbook was made for fans of The Princess Bride. It's filled with movie-related puns, behind the scene photos and filming trivia. This would make a good gift for the fans. Let's talk about the recipes, the instructions were clear and easy enough to follow. There's some party pleasing dishes as well as some suitable for a movie/tea party. However, for the more adventurous cook - the recipes wouldn't inspire you to a swash-buckling level of excitement. The excitement would very much still be found in the film.

Great cookbook for fans of the movie.
I enjoyed flipping through this one but I haven’t tried any recipes yet

This book is adorable and the recipes are easy enough to do with kids.

I received this book as an ARC in exhange for an honest review from NetGalley. But I did receive a kindle-type version. That version was very difficult to navigate as an ebook. And it was poorly laid out between pictures and getting to the recipes easily. I enjoyed the recipes enough to seek out the ACTUAL PRINT book at my local bookstore. Was MUCH MORE IMPRESSED. The layout incorporated pictures, the story and quotes in a clear way around the recipes. Without making it difficult to navigate. Recipes were easy to read and clear. With photos of each recipe. The PHYSICAL book would make a wonderful addition to a bookshelf, conversation book or as intended...a cookbook.

The recipes were moderate. They were easy to make, but lacking that anything unique. As someone who cooks a lot these are great base recipes you can improve upon. Fabulous for a parent trying to cook with a child who helps, a newer cook or even an advanced cook that is able to embellish. Since the recipes are easily accessible -lovers of the book will enjoy making items that tie into the story. This would be a great gift for with a updated copy of the movie for any die-hard Princess Bride fan. Some recipes are a bit more involved - such as seafood and paella recipes...but it would let a new cook grow as there are only a few of these more complex recipes.

I made the following: The Grandson's Soup (not the sandwich part, simply due to time on my part), Chips of Insanity and Sicilian Meatballs.
Grandsons Soup was a bit of a let down because the broth came from purchased broth making it salty and the noodles ended up being too soft for me. Making scrap broth would have been better; but for child this would be more approachable.
I enjoyed Chips of Insanity; spin on nachos using potato chips instead of tortilla. I enjoyed it, was able to add my own ingredients and make in small portions as well for midnight snack. And I continue to make this for a midnight snack
Sicilian meatballs were good. Nothing fancy. But good.

There are more common recipes renamed to fit the theme: Most Likely Kill You In the Morning (Shakshuka variation), Giant Boulders (fried mac n cheese balls), Bonettis Defense (beef kabobs). Its such a well round book. with a variety, that I will enjoy continuing to cook from it.

But I do have to buy the actual copy. As the ebook is lacking in page organization and ability to easily negotiate between recipes. Also I have a black and white kindle...which does not do the pictures/layout justice.

Would recommend as holiday, birthday or fan gift. Wish the book had come out much earlier prior to the holiday as it would have been a holiday hit.

I love themed cookbooks! I collect them so when I saw this one I had to request it!

Not only for the recipes but I loved seeing the pictures and information about the movie as well!
The recipes are pretty simple and straightforward but I really loved them!

This is full of quotes from the movie, pictures from the movie and the recipes, and great punned names for the recipes like Hash You Wish, six-fingered sandwiches, and a parties section.
It would make a great addition to the bookshelf of any Princess Bride fan.
The book includes gluten-free and vegan recipes ensuring all fans can find something fun to cook.
I received a copy via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.
