Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy. I felt this dragged a bit in parts, probably didn’t need to be as long as it was. It was a cute story, I feel the rabbit in it was more of a main character than others, which was weird to me. It was alright.

I was excited to pick this up. I like music related romance and am a fan of American Idol, but unfortunately this one was a miss for me.

The characters are adults but read like 15 year olds which was not enjoyable and did not make me like any of them. And the book waited until 80% through to actually give me any reason to want to root for Hazel in the competition. For most of the book I was just wondering why she wanted to win because it was not clear at all during most of the book why music was even a passion she wanted to pursue. And I was especially wondering why she'd go on a incredibly popular TV show when she was clearly hiding from a past she didn't want found out.

The romance in this book wasn't just under developed, it was nonexistent. We spend the first half of the book seeing Hazel enter into a weird fake relationship with another contestant and they aren't even the main love interest? And the thing was with the actual love interest was there were so many scenes they had together where they could have had moments that built them up as a couple, but the author just didn't do anything with those scenes, which was just so odd.

The inclusion of the bunny in this book ended up making me more mad than anything because the poor bunny was treated awfully! It was not worth it for the one mildly funny scene including the bunny at the end of the book.

The plot of this book also covers the #MeToo movement and I did not like the way several characters made fun of it.

This book did hook me to finish instead of DNFing in two ways. I was so intrigued as to what Hazel's past was that she was trying to cover up. And while I wasn't rooting for Hazel to win the competition, I did find myself curious how it was going to turn out

An adorable and fun romance. It's worth all the hype! This book was a quick and light-hearted read. Although it's refreshing to see a novel not focusing primarily on the romance aspect, it takes a while to get to it--which surprised me as the cover alludes to a love interest. The storyline is chaotic at times but well-written. If you enjoy reading about Reality TV or behind the scenes in Hollywood, definitely pick this one up!
Thank you to NetGalley and Katie Wicks for an advanced digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I have so many mixed feelings about Hazel Fine Sings Along.
There were things that I liked about it, but so much that I didn't.

I am not a fan of reality TV, and this is so much like watching those train wreck shows that I found myself disengaging from it all the time.

So many tropes all in one story, it came across as a bit confusing to me.

I couldn't find myself cheering for Hazel - it was all lies upon lies upon half truths, hurting everyone around her who she called a friend. And what was with every guy wanting her - like Patrick Verona/Heath Ledger says in 10 Things I hate About You - what is it with this chick? Does she have beer flavoured nipples? I just didn't get it.

But this is all just me, I am sure these won't bother most people

I was so excited about the premise of this book--I love a story about an up-and-coming singer/songwriter, and normally, a singing competition show would've made that even better for me.

Unfortunately, this book couldn't keep me invested.

The characters are written strangely. They're supposed to be in their twenties--our main character is supposed to be 28 but is pretending to be 22--but they all sound like they're a bunch of vapid teenagers. It's difficult to root for any of them when they're all so self-involved. They were all very one-dimensional as well; it felt like the author picked one distinguishable characteristic for each of them and stuck to only that, which was unfortunate.

There isn't much of a conflict either. Even when I stopped reading, the only thing going on was Hazel progressing, rather quickly, through this singing competition. There was a fellow competitor that she had some drama with, but that's not enough to keep the entire story moving.

The writing wasn't particularly strong either. Not a lot of descriptions, and as I mentioned earlier, the dialogue made the characters sound more juvenile than they were meant to be.

And, I'm sorry, but I can't get over the bunny, Checkers, that was randomly implanted into this story. What was the point of that rabbit? It was just a distraction to the plot and felt more self-indulgent than anything else.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of other aspiring singer/songwriter books that I would recommend before this one. In particular, It Goes Like This by Miel Moreland.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Barely 2 stars. The very first sentence had me wondering if I should keep reading. It was a poorly written sentence, sounding very young and amateurish. From reading other reviews, I guess it established the tone of the story.

What I read of the plot was chaotic at best. I don't really want to root for Hazel. Sure, I know she has a past that she ran away from but it was gogogo from page one and I never had a chance to connect with her.

I knew this would be in the realm of reality TV (not a favorite of mine) but the synopsis sounded cool and deeper than that drama. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to deliver on that feeling.

This is a no for me.

Adorable and Fun Romance. I started reading it on Wattpad where it racked up rave reviews and it's worth all the hype! We want more Katie Hicks!

Hazel Fine Sings Along shouldn't be labeled as a romance novel, and if readers go in with that expectation, they'll be disappointed. There is a romance in the book, but it is not the central story. This book is chick lit/contemporary fiction.

The story focuses on a singing competition and all the drama that surrounds that and celebrity life. The author brings up the #MeToo movement and handles it badly (it was a little offensive, honestly). The main character has terrible parents, and I was bothered by that resolution. There aren't really likable characters in the story. This story is good if you like watching trash reality shows.

Side note, I'm so confused about the rabbit in the story. Why was it even there? It added nothing except distraction.

I wouldn't recommend this book to most readers.

Hazel Fine Sings Along by Katie Wicks is the literary equivalent of The Voice. If you enjoy reality TV, you will love this book. Hazel Fine is approached to audition for the talent show, The Sing Along. She is living in a motel, behind on her bills, and stuck with a pet rabbit... winning this show could change her life!
The book and show follows Hazel and the 15 other contestants with a variety of backgrounds: a Hollywood golden child, bubbly country singer, surfer/influencer and over-zealous spoiled brat.

In addition to the contestants, the judges are questionable individuals and the musical director is broody and grumpy.

I was immediately intrigued by this book because Katie Wicks/Catherine McKenzie is one of my favorite authors. The other books I have read of hers are psychological thrillers so I was unsure how this plot would unfold. Whether she writes as Wicks or McKenzie, she is very talented!

Thank you to NetGalley, WattPad Webtoon and Katie Wicks for an advanced digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. This book releases 5.2.23.

This shouldn't be labeled as a romance novel, it's chick lit. And while it does have a romantic element, it isn't clear who the love interest is until over 50% through the book and the relationship between them isn't well developed.

I thought I'd enjoy this book because I love music (and romance novels) and while there is quite a bit of music throughout the story, it's mostly about Hazel's experience on the reality show called Sing Along.

Hazel isn't a likable heroine, she's a liar and selfish. The side characters around her aren't much better, and in some cases are much worse. The author tried to tackle too many storylines in one book. Is this about the #metoo movement or the dangers of celebrity or family estrangement or a romance? All those things are going on which means none of them are fully explored.

If you want to read about what it's like to be on American Idol, you'll like this book. Otherwise, skip it and read a romance of higher quality.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Do you need a page turner that is fun, light and entertaining?

Hazel needs a change in her life. Living in a run-down hotel and working at a coffee shop wasn’t the life she envisioned. Hazel is approached by a scout at an open mic night to audition for a TV singing competition, The Sing Along. Hazel agrees and ultimately makes it to the live round in the competition. Little did she know that she would be getting pressure from one of the judges that would break the rules, having to play along with a fake boyfriend, and that there would be drama from other contestants. Will these pressures get her eliminated or can Hazel stay on track to win?

A fun and entertaining ROM-COM that will have you turning the pages to cheer on Hazel. I loved how this author included Hazel owning a rescued bunny as a pet, because it just added to the chaos and humor!

If you are a fan of American Idol or The Voice, then this is a must read!

What a cute romcom story loosely based on the singing reality shows. Hazel is hiding so much and trying to keep it all from
unraveling as she works her way through the competition. There’s lots of drama; some #metoo; love and betrayal. It was a fast read and a solid debut!

This was a cute story, it was definitely a slow burn but I enjoyed the character interactions.

Fun quick read

A big thankyou to Netgally, author Katie Wicks and publisher Wattpad WEBTOON Book Group for early reading access to the amazing book.
I enjoyed every minute reading this music based story. It was written very smoothly for a nice smooth read and it was difficult to stop reading as I was keen to find out what was going to keep happening in the story.
As a musician and music lover I enjoyed the music element. I also enjoyed the parts of the story that keep coming and coming, some of which was unexpected.
I highly recommend this read when it is available to buy.
In the future you can also find my review at my youtube channel Evie's Vlog in my upcoming February Wrap up.

This book follows 22 (but secretly 28) year old Hazel Fine as she competes in a reality TV singing competition show called “The Sing Along”.

Throughout the novel, Hazel faces a number of challenges. She has to deal with a singer who may have it out for her, an influencer who may have feelings for her, a harassing judge/producer who keeps making passes at her and on top of everything, keeping track of her bunny, Checkers, who is not allowed in the hotel.

But what Hazel least expects is to fall for the show’s musical producer - or for him to fall for her.

As Hazel navigates her way through The Sing Along, she must also make sure her past and true identity are kept secret.

I really enjoyed this read, and loved the ending as well. Hazel Fine Sings Along is a fun, romantic read that will keep you turning pages until the very end. If you’re a fan of American Idol, this is a must-read.

This was a sweet, easy read.
Hazel is a neurotic but strong character.
For a while, I thought Benji would be the love interest, but Nick swooped in and stole Hazel's heart.
I had a feeling Nick and Martin knew about Hazel's past.
I loved Zoey and her Black Queer representation.
I loved Amber and the sex-worker representation and how is wasn't done in a seedy way. She's a good friend to Hazel.
I'm not sure I would have forgiven Hazel's parents as easily as she did.
Martin...what a creep.

I received an advance copy. All opinions are my own.

This one was interesting! The characters kept me engaged throughout the story. The reality tv show aspect was also interesting to read about. This one just had so much going on at points. There was nonstop drama taking place. I found myself at points feeling confused in the different rumors and stories of the characters.

1/5 stars! This cover was super cute and I enjoy reading contemporary romance novels so I was hopeful for this book. I also really like reality TV show-based books. However, this book did not at all live up to its premise. The characters were shallow and 2-dimensional, which made it impossible to root for them. Additionally, I'm not sure if the author was trying to teach readers to do better than her characters but there were some plot points around harassment and drinking that were handled extremely poorly and were off-putting. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this book.
