I enjoyed this audiobook. The narrators were fantastic and the plot lines really had me guessing what was going to happen. I didn't predict the outcome which is rare for me.

This is definitely a slooowwwww paced mystery with thriller aspects towards the end. I LOVED the first 70%, but the pacing was def off for me. I like a slow mystery, then the end was super off. It was both over the top, yet lack luster at the same time.

I'd recommend to people who love a good mystery, but are fairly new to thrillers. I think it definitely has its audience. All in all, good book! I'd prob give it a 3.5 star.

Thought I had read even of the “ true crime podcast’ thriller that I almost past this title, but I am glad I didn’t and received a copy of this title. Honestly, as soon as I heard the audio with Joanne Froggatt the atmosphere was set and I could not wait to finish. So many twists and turns that it kept me hooked to the end, glad to see that my library has a copy. Will recommend this title for anyone looking for a good audiobook thriller.

Read this book if you aren't satisfied with half truths, have a knack for being too involved, and are desperate to look at the full story.

Twenty five years ago, the small town of Wilshire is rocked by a car accident that cripples Olivia Rutherford and her three friends in the car with her disappeared. With the upcoming anniversary of the mystery, Jenna Halliday packs her bags and decides to highlight the story on her podcast to see if anyone has new information. Jenna's life is quite a mess at the moment with her husband asking for space, so she decides focusing on the story could be a great distraction. But when she starts receiving notes to stay away from the case, she quickly realizes that the attention she's giving the town means that someone out there has answers.

This book was a fun ride! You get the chance to jump between three different timelines and a lot of complex characters. Jenna plays the role of martyr extremely well while still being relatable and Olivia's character development is top notch. I was disappointed with the ending, but that is all personal preference based on how the story developed. I think that this book was done incredibly well and should definitely be on your TBR!

Thank you to Claire Douglas, Harper Audio, and NetGalley for this audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Girls Who Disappeared is a compelling mystery surrounding the 20-year-old disappearance of three of the four girls after suffering a car accident on the Devil's Corridor. This supposedly haunted and remote area adds to the creepy ambiance of the story. This book is definitely worth reading!

I didn't care much for this one. It was hard for me to follow. I didn't end up finishing it. Maybe next time!

Read if you:
-want an atmospheric mystery
-need a good audio book (Joanne Froggatt!)
-like alternating viewpoints and timelines
Thoughts:
This story hooked me from the start. I like the journalistic POV of Jenna because Olivia was a bit harder to warm up to. I also love having a chapter to hate sometimes, and Wes is so easy to dislike. I felt like this story slowed a lot in the middle and I had to rewind if I missed something. I like a slow burn, but this was a bit too slow. The ending didn’t totally shock me, but I thought it tied everything together pretty well. Overall, add it to your wintery thriller list!

I have loved all of this author’s books, but this one is my least favorite. It was still enjoyable, but the ending just got a bit far-fetched for me. It’s about a group of teenage girls that get into a car accident, only one lives, but the rest of them disappear. Many years later, a reporter comes to town to find out what happened to the girls that went missing….. someone wants to keep it buried.

Twenty years after three girls mysteriously disappear, a podcast creator comes into town to interview the only girl who, after their car crash, remained. There are so many question, where were the girls? Were they ever even there?

Told with alternating POVs and with an additional timeline story, it immediately thrusts the reader into the small town drama. And there is no shortage of drama! It is a bit of a slow burn however and I wanted more action. The ending was a bit of a letdown as well. I wanted more! Overall I enjoyed the book and will definitely read more by this author!

This is only my second book by Claire Douglas but I feel like I’ve been reading her books forever. Her outstanding writing style flows seamlessly and kept me hungry for more.

Two distinct and gripping narratives come together during the ominous tale of “The Girls Who Disappeared”. A jaunt to Thailand with four couples was a mysterious portion that factored in much later in the book, also.

Secrets never stay buried and they become more unmanageable the longer we cover them up. There is always someone prepared to expose them.

Jenna is a podcaster investigating and reporting on an old accident that took place on the Devil’s Corridor. A local road known for chilling and bizarre activity. Twenty years earlier, four girls driving home wreck their car, and only one was seen again. Olivia survived but badly injured her leg. The strange atmosphere hints at the possibility that unexplained forces may be at play.

The audiobook has fantastic narration and might be the best option for this book!

Sincere thanks to Harper Audio for providing this gifted ARC through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Thanks to Harper Audio & NetGalley for providing an audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was very excited to listen to this one since I knew that Joanne Froggatt would totally deliver (and she did). The other voice actor, Clare Corbett, was fine.

The story starts off great: 20 years previous, a group of 18 year old girls gets into a car crash coming home from clubbing. Olivia, the driver, isn't drunk (she was DD that night), but she gets stuck behind the wheel and her leg is seriously injured. When she comes to, the other passengers, her best friends, are gone, and after 20 years, still haven't been found.

In the present day, Jenna is a recently-separated journalist who has been commissioned by the BBC to do a podcast on the case. She and Olivia take turns narrating the story, with a timeline from the past , in Thailand in the 90s. Jenna is a likeable MC, who feels torn about being away from her kid and confused at the state of her marriage. She also meets up with a police detective about her age with whom she feels a spark, but thankfully, in this book, not everything ends up tied up in a neat bow.

Olivia is less likeable, but of course her character is feeling defensive about the anniversary of the incident and the fact that the people in her village still think she knows where the missing girls are, or had something to do with their disappearance. Only her boyfriend from that time, Wesley, and her mom have stuck by her, as she navigates life still living with her mom (her dad is not in the picture; this becomes important later) in middle age, and not committing to Wesley beyond dating and staying at his apartment sometimes. Basically Olivia is in arrested development.

The book is really good for the first 3/4, but then when we get to the explanations at the end it almost feels like Douglas had the concept of the missing girls but didn't really think about the solution until the end. It feels rushed and not well thought out, which is a shame, as the rest of the book is so good. The ending is kind of not too credible, and of course there's a twist, but I can't say I was surprised by it.

3.5 stars rounded up

While I was hooked from the beginning with a car crash and three of the four girls go missing, but the middle started to drag a bit for me and then the ending fell flat for me unfortunately

I do recommend this one, you might enjoy it!
Thanks Netgalley

I enjoyed this twisty mystery from Claire Douglas. I enjoyed the different points of view but I will admit, I was thoroughly confused by the story whenever we were hearing Stace's POV, I couldn't really figure out who these characters were. With that said, I love how Claire tied Stace's POV into the story. I liked the ending and I think this could even be turned into a series with Jenna traveling to new towns to investigate stories for her podcast.

I liked Joanne Froggatt and Clare Corbett's narration of this novel and I will definitely look for books narrated by either or both narrators in the future.

THE GIRLS WHO DISAPPEARED follows Jenna, a journalist who wants to cover a cold case as part of a new podcast. Twenty years ago on a supposedly haunted road outside of a rural town a group of four friends had an accident. When help arrived, only one girl was found in the car. Olivia lives with the daily pain of her injuries, working alongside her mother and mourning her lost three friends. She doesn’t remember what happened that night and the case remains unsolved.

Jenna’s investigation on the twentieth anniversary has stirred up the locals and she starts getting notes telling her to stop. Though she is scared a time or two, she is determined to get answers. Olivia hasn’t asked many questions over the years, but memories begin to stir and she too is determined to find out once and for all why she was the only survivor.

I was immediately intrigued by the idea of this twist on the final girl trope and I really enjoyed both Jenna and Olivia as characters. Both have complicated personal lives and I liked seeing how they got to know each other and form a bond and they began to work toward the same ends. Olivia in particular was an interesting character. She’s had scars from the accident, both physical and mental, and I can’t imagine the life she’s had to lead living in that town where everyone knows her tragic back story.

I found this a fun read overall and it’s an easily bingeable thriller! I would definitely read more from Claire Douglas in the future!

A twenty-year mystery. A woman on the verge of discovering the truth…

If you love a good cold-case mystery with a lot of suspense and some pretty unpredictable twists (and who doesn’t) The Girls Who Disappeared might be just what you’re looking for!

For me, Claire Douglas @clairedouglasauthor always delivers a totally addictive read. I will say that I was perplexed about how the two plot lines were going to merge, but, when it happened, all the pieces fell into place, and I wondered how I haven’t seen it all along.

This was such a fun thriller! I had no idea what was going to happen next and I stayed very engaged throughout. Also one of the audiobook narrators is from a favorite tv show of mine so that was fun!

Title: The Girls Who Disappear
Author: Claire Douglas
Rating: 3.5/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨- Rounded up to 4 Stars on NetGalley and GoodReads

2023 must be the year for slow burns for me because I feel like that is the only thing that I have read so far this year. As per most of my reads so far this year - this one started off fairly fast paced, and then tapers off into a slow burn in the middle to have the end really pick up as the final twist is revealed.

This one is told from the perspective of Jenna (a news journalist), Olivia (the survivor of the crash from the past) and Stace (someone vacationing in Thailand?) I was all about Jenna and Olivia’s parts, but if I am being honest I did not understand why this Staces’ story even mattered. I didn’t really appreciate her story, or figure out how it mattered until the very end, which at that point was a nice twist but I felt like by that point I was less invested. Throughout I was super intrigued, just wished it kept that fast pace and a bit more information into Stace.

I’ve seen some mixed reviews on the ending of this one, and I am pretty indifferent about it. I thought that this was wrapped up pretty nicely, but I dont think that it was the most unique or memorable ending, but I think it worked for the story.

I listened to this via audio and think that Joanne Froggatt and Clare Corbett did a great job bringing this one to life for the listener! I followed along great, except for Stace’s part like I already mentioned. They did great at setting that atmospheric tone for this creepy thriller!

Not my favorite by this author but definitely one that I liked enough. I’m excited to read even more of her work! The Girls Who Disappeared was just released this week on 1/10 - be sure to check it out!

This was a fantastic thriller! I enjoyed the multiple POV, short chapters and pacing that kept me on the edge of my seat for most of the book. Midway it slowed down a bit but picked up again for an ending full of surprises and twists!

My second Claire Douglas and it’s official she is an read for me! I love listening to thrillers on audio and this one was fast paced, full of clues and twist and turns! With multiple POV… one being a podcaster visiting a small town where they had a mysterious car crash 20 years prior with three girls that up and vanished. Olivia the lone survivor, and Stacie a mystery throughout but a young woman on vacay in Thailand. A unique story that I feel like Douglas always delivers
