Another wonderful book by C. J. Box! This Joe Pickett story pulls you in and doesn’t let go. The adventure is set in snowy Wyoming and Box’s writing is so descriptive you feel the chill and impact of the blinding snow storms. Joe’s wife, daughters and opportunistic mother-in-law star in this thriller along with Nate and some intriguing new characters. Even though this is part of an ongoing series, it works easily as a standalone mystery.

Thanks to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam for the opportunity to read this great ARC.

C.J. Box is one of my favorite authors. His description of the Wyoming wilderness and wildlife give the reader a glimpse of the rugged nature. This book has so many twists and scenarios. I couldn’t put it dow until I finished reading.

In CJ Box's Storm Watch (GP Putnam's Sons 2023), twenty-third book in the Joe Pickett series, Joe as usual gets caught up in a murder not officially part of his game warden duties and one he is warned to back away from. As is a recurring theme, Joe has to pull the threads to the why and how, regardless of the warnings he gets from bosses and colleagues. In this case, a man has been shoved into the blades of a powerful fan that shears off half his head. When Joe tries to pass what must be a murder on to local authorities, they find no man, no blood, and no evidence of a murder at the scene. They want to let it go, but Joe has pictures and can't walk away. The more he digs into it, the more confusing it is. With no help from law enforcement colleagues or Wyoming political leadership, he enlists the support of his wife to research background and falconer friend Nate Romanowski to go undercover in a subversive group called the Sovereign nation.

On top of trying to track down this murderer, Joe is trying to stop a group that is collecting antlers from elk before they’re ready to shed them (how they do this is appalling).

Throughout the story are forays into Wyoming's glorious mountain vistas of brilliant snow, a rural world barely touched by civilization and communities.

If you have enjoyed Joe Pickett novels in the past, you’ll like this one too. I've read all of them and plan to ready everything Box writes, so why a 4/5 rating? Not quite sure. One metric I use is can I put it down or does it call to me while I try to complete my daily tasks. This one, I did manage to set aside.

Joe Pickett and Nate Romanowski ride again. I can never get enough Joe Pickett. Join the them in a domestic terrorism situation in this exciting exciting Pickett addition.

CJ Box kept me wanting to read until the end. I enjoyed every minute of this book! I've read some of Joe Pickets earlier ones and yet I was able to jump in and keep up with everything going on and couldn't wait to get to the end to see what happens.
Great book, great author!

Joe Pickett, a Wyoming game warden, gets involved in a convoluted plot involving wounded elk, militants, and crypto currency. Joe’s nemesis, the governor of Wyoming, would like to obstruct his investigation, as would the local extremists who are trying to recruit his good friend Nate into their group. The setting for this series is always fascinating because it is so alien to most people, and the friendship between Joe Pickett and the mysterious Nate Romanowski is always satisfying. This time out, though, I didn’t feel as invested in the story as usual. It was confusing and in the end, I didn’t care too much about the resolution other than seeing the good guys prevail. A minor disappointment, overall, but I will continue to look forward to the next Joe Pickett adventure nevertheless.

Another un-put-down-able book in the series! I think I say this every review for CJ Box but I feel these books get better with each new novel in the series. Cannot wait to see what Joe, Marybeth, Nate and the rest of the gang get into next! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.

Storm Watch is book #23 in the Joe Pickett series.
Joe is a game warden in Wyoming and the scenery is always described so aptly that I imagine I am there.

In this book Joe stumbles upon a professor who had mysteriously vanished. In the meantime Joe's partner Nate is building his falconry business and is approached by secessionists - military activists with quite a mean streak.

Nate isn't sure what he should do - whereas Joe is adamantly against it.

Box writes in such a way that the characters are fully fleshed out and engaging. The plot is always engrossing and this book does not disappoint.

I was provided an advance copy of Storm Watch by the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
In this 23rd novel featuring Wyoming Game Warden, Joe Pickett, author CJ Box has once again proven why he remains one of the most popular and best writers of a continuing series. Box has the uncanny ability to make each novel better than the last, rare these days. The author's writing is so smooth and effortless, and before you realize it, you are quickly drawn into another wonderful adventure by the very likable, Joe Pickett.
Storm Watch features many familiar faces and fan favorites, playing prominent roles, as Pickett tries to solve several mysteries, in the unique way readers expect from both Box and Pickett.
It is important to note that this book can be read as a stand alone, but for the maximum enjoyment of reading Box and this series, take the time and indulge yourself to a real treat, and start at the very beginning of the series.
I particularly enjoyed the government conspiracy angles in this story, that were both deep and complex, with a very interesting and unique twist to it all. As usual, Picket relies on his wife MaryBeth, daughter Sheridan and former outlaw and friend Nate Romanowski to assist him in uncovering the truth, and in Nate's case to once again step in at just the right time to save Pickett's life.
This book has everything the reader expects from the Joe Pickett series, and CJ Box masterfully once again proves why is one of the best.

I do love CJ Box novels! Every one of them is great, some greater than others, but all good. I enjoyed this book, but found the subject not as interesting as most of his others. Still it was a good book and I didn't put it down much. I love the characters, it is a very character driven series, and I love the growth with all of them. Sheridan particularly. I love both of his series, but Joe Pickett best. Highly recommend the whole series.....in order!!!

A dead university professor. Crypto currency and a crooked Governor. Welcome to Joe Pickett’s world in Storm Watch. Another gem from C J Box. Only problem - I now must wait a year for the next book!!!

I am a longtime fan of CJ Box and Joe Pickett. This book did not disappoint EXCEPT I felt like the ending was rushed. I'd have preferred a bit more development there, rather than SPOILER Nate just kills most of the bad guys.....

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I’ve been reading the Joe Picket novels since almost the beginning.
This is yet another good one. I don’t know if I could ever stop liking this series or reading it.
Great job as always.

Poor Joe Pickett is always winding up in trouble somehow because he wants to do the right thing.

This was another fun read from Box that I zoomed through. It was a pleasant surprise to see some old characters show up and have a role though I didn’t remember some of the previous characters.

Box continued his easy going writing style in this one but spices it up a bit by having several seemingly unrelated plots that weave together nicely at the end. Well done Mr. Box.

I’ve been a longtime fan of this series and after reading this book, am glad to see the series has not turned stale and look forward to the next book.

Recommended for fans of Box, fans of westerns, or anyone who wants a book that’s easy to read yet still holds your attention.

Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

BIG thanks to both G.P. Putnam's Sons and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of Storm Watch!!

What a great book!! I was a bit disappointed by the last book ... but this one knocked it out of the park!!!

Storm Watch finds Joe and Nate surrounded by a storm of peril. They confront it in different ways—and maybe, for the first time, on opposite sides.

This one had all of the things I love about the series: A huge snowstorm, mystery, lots of tension, good guys who may or may not really be good, bad guys who may or may not really be bad, Joe's sweet dog, Daisy, and his wonderful daughter, Sheridan.

May this series never, EVER end!

I don’t think this book is quite as good as many others by this author but it was a good book that had a great ending. Joe Pickett once again gets mixed up in controversy when he finds a University of Wyoming professor dead in the snowy mountains. Nate is also back and backing up his friend. CJ Box does a superb job of creating tension and making Joe the hero. Joe Pickett is a lot of fun to follow, and this book includes appearances by his daughter Sheridan. I received an arc of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own,

February, 2023 will be something to look forward to. Joe Pickett is back with another doozy of a read for all his fans, and I hope those soon to be fans.

I was a little disappointed in the last book but this one more then makes up for it. All the elements we have come to expect grace these pages; corrupt politicians, home grown terrorists, nefarious cops, and let’s not forget the snow storms. That’s right….plural. There is more then one. Joe, with the help of his friends and family manage to get to the bottom of this conundrum before it all blows away.

Enjoy!
