The book takes place in present time and a massive solar flare takes out all electronics. The book centers on one man's struggle to stay alive. It's a good read.

There's something irresistible about the premise of a electronics apocalypse. This is a well imagined, well told story about how one man copes with the first few days after a solar flare destroys everything electronic, presumably globally. Rounding out the survivalist planning, weapons acquisition, team building, and looting, is an introspective look into a man well into a midlife crisis before the apocalypse even hits. He thinks he loves his wife, but she can't stand it when he touches her. He identifies as a big, strong man's man, but has allowed himself to gain 100 lbs. and drinks too much. He keeps getting fired. He has an instinct for heroics, and the people around him either idolize or loathe him. Women throw themselves at him. He plows into fights against large groups of armed men with a box cutter or crowbar and wins, so this isn't the average person. The whole book takes place over just a few days, so there's no long term outcomes, but it if you like Jack, and he is likeable, there are hints that many more books will lay out his story in great detail.

My feelings kept changing about this book as I read it.

Some parts were a bit slow, some were action packed. The detail of each scene was interesting at times, but overkill at others.

I found myself liking the story more once Jack left the airport. However it took 3/4 of the book for him to do so.

In general, I didn’t like Jack’s character, he continuously puts himself in danger while telling everyone he has to get back to his family. He seems like he uses his fists first instead of his words resulting in others getting hurt/killed.

I was hoping Jack would team up with some other characters, hopefully some longer lasting female leads, so we will see what happens in the second book. Danni was my favourite person so far…. But…. If you know, you know…

Nicely done. This has action, interesting characters, and an engaging plot. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

I really appreciate the free review copy for review!!

The downfall of modern life by an solar ejection starts this apocalyptic novel. It only take a short time to descend into chaos but the characters are good even the bad ones fast paced, would recommend it ready now for book two.
Thanks to Rounding Pelham publishing and Netgalley for this ARC book

The pulse is a kind of EMP end of the word story, that starts with a crash of an aeroplane and it works, we start the story with the chaos of the plane crashing and then goes back and tell us how jack ended up in that particular plane, and that makes us like him, he is genuinely a good guy with a short temper, he is broken because of something that happened in his past, and that way he is make relatable to many of us… Jack also have a drinking problem and he over indulges in eating and that is something that put his relationship with his family in peril and when calling his wife to tell her that he has been fired, he learns that his wife left their house and she is going to her father house with both their kids, so he needs to find his north before going to them… and all of this before the world he knew came to an end.

While I did like the book I felt that some parts could have been skimmed and still it would make sense, I understand that because of his background as a hygiene and safety technician he would be an asset to the fireman, even to the marines (if only Jaygee wasn't such an a$$), but we don’t need to have so many details, I wish we could have had more of Matt in the book, in the end he was a more of a tease than a real companion, I also did like jack’s conversations with himself, in witch he was like two different people.

Overall is a good book that will entertain you, but honestly I hope that if the end comes like this, it would take more than 3 days to reach this kind of chaos, it is really overwhelming how TSHTF so fast and how fast and easily it is for jack to descend into darkness… but if you want to know more I would advice you to grab a copy and read for yourself.

Thank you NetGalley and Runding Pelham Publishing for the free ARC and this is my honest opinion.

A sensational novel - brilliantly written - exceptional story. The protagonist Jack Broderick is extremely well developed as are all the other characters in this brutal story. This is the first novel of 'The Pulse' series and I am eagerly waiting for the next. I have also read the prequel 'RA' (supplied by Owen Garratt) which was a wonderful lead in to this novel. A highly recommended read and well worthy of five stars.
