When they go on an adventure together the big dog known as, well, Big Dog, is all about the power and strength and size and speed. Until he finds himself coming stuck at a certain key moment – can the smaller guile of Squiz the Squirrel save the day? Of course it can, there would be little moral here if he didn't. Perhaps better here than the script is the artwork, not afraid to be peculiar and cartoonish but giving of much character and definitely showing the action when needed. I've started to see books from this publisher recently, all as far as I know reprints from a British house I likewise had never heard of. So here we go back to 2017, and even if this is not the best from these imprints, there is a universal appeal here and still enough quality to consider this – three and a half stars.

Reading Big Dog and Squiz reminded me of my dog and our back yard squirrel. It's a fun story that shows the reader that everyone has a purpose and can contribute in a friendship.

A dog and a squirrel? What an unusual pair of pals! They have some BIG adventures together, and learn that bigger is not always better.

This is a cute tale of friendship and fun. I enjoyed the paintings by Lynne Hudson - so different from the usual outlined children's book illustrations.

Such a sweet story about friends helping each other and everyone having their own strengths! I loved the fun, colorful illustrations. The pictures and story were both silly and fun!

The story was very well written. I thought though it was a little long long and at time the illustrations seemed like they could be scary for children.

Move over Clifford the Big Red Dog, and make way for Big Dog, another (yes, you got it) big dog with a heart of gold, and his squirrel sidekick, Squiz. Big Dog and Squiz decide to take on an adventure in this cute little tale, and explore the woods beyond the backyard and garden they call home, with Big Dog usually saving the day for little Squiz. That is – until an unexpected enemy threatens to ruin the duo’s day, and for once Squiz must save Big Dog. A precious little tale about unlikely friendships, helping each other out along the way, and how all of our unique qualities come in handy at one point or another, allowing us to use our own abilities and skills to look out for our pals in times of trouble.
