The moment I picked up this book I got Desperate Housewives vibes! And that, it was! Neighborhood drama inflated with inter connected secrets and lies! There's drug use, there's domestic violence, there's cheating, alcoholism, guns, teen angst, and murder!!! A lot packed into one novel. Full of twists and turns as the secrets unravel into light.
It was a fun thriller, but cheesy at times (everyone's so happy at the end!)
I'm curious to read another Jaime Day book. 3.5

Oh the drama on Alton road. If you are a fan of The Real Housewives or Big Little Lies this book is for you! This book has juicy details, cheating, lying, secrets, sneaking around, and an annual house party that brings the whole block together. If you love a good revenge book this might also be a book for you however, there is not really any revenge just the thought and planning of maybe revenge. I love the alternating point of view between Alex and her daughter Lettie. Each have a similar path but experiencing different drama. Lettie is going into her senior year and dealing with some bullying from an ex best friend. Everyone comes to Alex to talk about their marital problems or other issue. I really had no clue where the drama would go next or which neighbor would be involved, it kept me so intrigued. The last 30% of the book flew by as more and more details unfolded. Many thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the digital review copy of this novel. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This suburban thriller starts off at an annual Memorial Day neighbourhood barbecue and I thought I knew exactly what I had buckled in for. We meet our protagonist, Alex, who appears to have a bit of a drinking problem and causes an embarrassing disruption at the party. But despite the familiarity of these initial themes, boy did this book keep me up at night with twist after twist! The story is told through multiple perspectives and it's one of those settings where you can feel the tension building throughout the story, until things come to an explosive end. The multiple perspective technique is done well here - as the reader, you really really oscillate between trust and distrust of various characters.
This was a gripping domestic thriller that really kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time - and oh boy, that ending! With rich people, unreliable narrators, affairs, mounting tension, and murky secrets, The Block Party is a must-read for fans of Big Little Lies.

Behind closed doors in Alton Road all the families are hiding secrets from each other but who's secret is deadly enough to make a fun annual block party on Memorial Day end in a tragedy?
The Block Party by Jamie Day is a well developed character driven domestic thriller , narrated by two different PoV’ s. A brilliant twisty story with an unexpected ending made it a fun read for me.
I would like to thank St. Martin’s Press & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.

This book is packed with secrets within secrets within secrets. Each chapter keeps you guessing trying to figure out what has happened. While there are several characters featured in the book, it isn't hard to keep up with who everyone is. The entire book you are trying to figure out what everyone's secret is and how they are tied together.

This was a DNF at 8% for me. I couldn’t get past the cringey dialogue and one-dimensional characters.
This is definitely the book for someone, but that someone was unfortunately not me.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me a complimentary copy of THE BLOCK PARTY by Jamie Day in exchange for my honest review.
I do enjoy a novel where you know at the first what the "event" is and then piece it together throughout the rest of the work.
The first chapter sets up the event - murder - and a whole list of who it could be and who did it. In the retelling of the previous year we are led to think of a number of combinations of victim and killer. The ending was satisfying in that it made perfect sense and also was not easily guessed while getting to the point.
I will be looking for more Jamie Day in my TBR list.

DNF @ 31%. I’ve read enough to sense that this will be a 3 star book and nothing that’s bugging me is going to improve. Maybe it redeems itself in the end but it’s reading like a subpar wannabe Liane Moriarty novel. It feels like a screenplay of Desperate Housewives. If the writing had been less juvenile and the character development more well-rounded, I could have continued but once I get irked, I can’t unsee what’s irking me.

I want to Thank you to NetGalley and thanks to the publisher for the opportunity to read this one early.
I plowed right through this book craving for more!! Many twists and turns that had me constantly altering to guess how this one was going to play out. Boom I did not see that coming. Another great read in the books!!!

It was okay. I had a hard time getting into it. I think it just wasn’t for me. Others may enjoy. If the description interest you, give it a try.

“The Block Party” by Jamie Day is such an addictive book! I was hooked from page one! The story is told from two POVs: the mother Alex, and her daughter Lettie. When Alex has too much to drink at the neighborhood party, her husband sends her home. Unhappily, she complies and walks herself home. She dozes off on the couch, soon to be woken by the sound of sirens. The story continues from there going back and forth over the previous year and current timeline, leaving the reader to wonder why the police are at the block party.
I loved the addition of the Facebook Community page complete with your typical neighborhood gossip and troublemakers. My favorite character is Lettie, she goes through so much personal growth in a year!
If you’re looking for a twisty domestic drama/thriller- this one is for you! Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.

What an addictive read! Another reader described this as a cross between Desperate Housewives and Big Little Lies - such a spot on description! It was fast-paced and full of twists and turns. I highly recommend this book. I am looking forward to more reads from Jamie Day!
The book is told through two perspectives - Alex and her daughter Lettie. The book opens with a Memorial Day weekend block party. We find out right away that someone has died at the party. But who could it be?
Alex and her family live in an upscale neighbourhood. All the neighbours have their own secrets. A new family moves into the neighbourhood, and the secrets continue to pile up.
Thank you St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the advanced copy.

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for a sneak peak of this book for my honest opinion.
3.5 Star
This book is told through the prospective of a mother and daughter. It will be good for a young adult reader as well as adult. It tells of the secrets and lies of a small community. There are several characters that makes it sometimes hard to keep things in line. It starts off a little slow but does pick up a little. A third of the way in and I'm still not exactly sure of when the mystery begins--- and then it starts with a missing neighbor, a new neighbor, to this posh community. It was a good read that had me guessing... but still fell a little flat.

The Block Party by Jamie Day is a mystery/thriller centered around a wealthy neighborhood. There's an annual Memorial Day block party in the neighborhood and someone ends up dead. Who is the victim and who is the murderer? Secrets surrounding the residents are about to unfold.
It took me a while to finish this book -- the plot is slow and took a while to unfold, in my opinion. The beginning was a bit confusing because of the shifts in characters' narrations and past and present. However, about halfway through the book, the plot thickens and the secrets surrounding the neighbors start unfolding. Jamie Day keeps the suspense of who got shot at the Memorial Day Block Party until the end, with the events from Memorial Day the year before leading up to the current day Block Party. I felt there were a lot of loose ends the author threw out there, but she tied it up nicely by the end of the book.
I would recommend this book. Thank you to Netgalley, publisher St. Martin's Press, and author Jamie Day for providing me with an ARC, in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Long and involved, with an expected ending. Much happening in this particular neighborhood, most not good and some maturing, which was needed. This is a good read, I did find myself wishing it would move along in places. The Wookie, and the Bug Man evidently made the rounds. Lol.

I love novels & mysteries that involve rich people neighborhoods, and The Block Party was no exception! The story of the secrets that take place over the course of a year on Alton Rd has quite a few little twists, all while trying to figure out who winds up dead during the party. Looking forward to more from the author!

I really loved this book. It started out fast paced and kept up through the entire book and kept me on my toes and guessing the whole time. It was a fun and quick read and I think it would be a good book turned into a TV show! Echoing the sentiment of other reviewers, I think fans of Desperate Housewives and Big Little Lies will love this one as it reminded me of both of those. Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and the author, Jamie Day for allowing me to read an advance copy of this gem of a book!

This book reminded me of the tv show Desperate Housewives, suburban drama! I really loved this book and found myself not able to put it down. This book is told from 2 different point of views, Alex, a suburban mom and the other point of view is of her daughter Lettie. Both characters were extremely well written and I found myself feeling such a range of emotions it was crazy. One minute you are shocked, then sad, then horrified. Alex's account introduces you to the other wives and every one has thier own secrets and so do thier husbands. Lettie is a teenager (I think 17?) and she is very independant and has a bunch of causes that she is passionate about which I wish more teenagers cared about right now. She has her own drama with the new kid that moves into the neighborhood and is interesting to follow her story. This would be a great tv show or movie, so many twists, turns and surprises, you had no idea what was going to happen.

When you live on Alton Road life is perfect. Perfect house, perfect lawn, perfect family, perfect marriage....until the curtain falls and real life is revealed. Alex loves her street and neighbors. She loves putting together the annual block party that brings everyone together. It cant be a summer without the block party. But slowly over the months, strange happenings have started occurring. There is a stalker terrifying some of the ladies. A new family moves in and something is just off. Alex's nightly wine ritual is getting out of hand. And now someone is dead. Who died and more importantly, who did it?!
I have read other works by Jaime Beck and The Block Party also does not disappoint. Beck pulls you in, introduces you to the neighbors and makes you feel like you are one of the characters too. Good storyline, suspenseful and keeps you guessing. Small parts of the past are revealed as the book progresses. The chapters are broken down from several characters point of view and each are clearly labeled. It works here and was easy to navigate the story. I am always looking for additional works by Jaime Beck and will continue to recommend Beck's work to other readers like myself. Special thanks to NetGalley, Jaime Beck, and St. Martin's Press for the advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest opinion. 4 stars for me! #NetGalley

I just finished reading "The Block Party" by Jamie Day. Many thanks to NetGalley and St Martin's Press for an advanced copy in return for an honest review. Here are my thoughts.
This book has many characters but each character has an important role to play in this masterfully written book about what. happens in a suburban street during an annual block party. This book is about relationships family, friendship, grief, and revenge, and whether or not it is truly satisfying.
The story begins at the end and then goes to one year before the event happened and the reader gets to know all the characters and their relationships with each other. The author gives just enjough information to create intrigue and interest in the story and what happens at the block party. I loved the female characters in this book. While not perfect they were well written and rootable. The men..not so much, but. maybe that was the point. The character I was most intrigued by was Jay Kumar...was he good or bad...or a little of both.
What I liked about this story was that there were alot of things happening that led to more interest into what happeded at the Block Party. I loved that I couldnt figure out who the bad guy was... I mean I had some ideas but I was pleasabtly shocked be some of the reveals at the end, especially with Riley... I also really liked )or was interested in Mandy Kumar's back story.
What I did'nt like. I didn't really like the male characters as I said...but I suppose that was the point. In the end, I am glad that some of the men were written the way they were....except for the Bug Man...what was the point of that other that to expose the truth about the main bad guy?
Overall, a great read by an author who masterfully took 10 or so characters and somehow found a way to intertwine them into a great story from start to finish..
