I didn't know tattoos had their own language/meanings. I think my best friend who is a tattoo artiest who would love a copy of this book to have in her studio for clients to look through as they wait. It is also making me think about other tattoos I want to get in the future.

A really interesting look into the art of tattooing and the symbolism used throughout history. I liked learning about the meaning behind different images (I have a peony tattoo myself) but in the long run I doubt I’ll remember anything I read that I didn’t already know.

I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. (The version I read was a finished copy.)

I've been fascinated by tattoos and the meaning behind them given that my sister has two of them, and reading this was an awesome journey into the symbolism of them-and I loved the illustrations which I admit compliment the narrative.
Thank you Netgalley for the eARC.

I found "The Language of Tattoos" a really interesting read. Of course, the reason behind people's tattoos are often deeply personal but I really learnt a lot about the history and context of different tattoo designs. I thought it was particularly effective how different themed tattoos are laid out in different sections, so you can jump straight to your favourite style. It would make a book for your coffee table collection.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to review an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

"The Language of Tattoos" by Nick Schonberger is an insightful exploration of the power, history, and cultural significance of tattoos. Schonberger, a writer and researcher with a deep understanding of tattoo culture, takes the reader on a journey through the history of tattoos, from their early beginnings to their current status as a mainstream cultural phenomenon.

One of the book's strengths is its focus on the meaning behind tattoos. Schonberger delves into the symbolism and significance of various tattoo designs, showcasing the diverse ways in which tattoos have been used throughout history to convey messages about identity, belonging, and personal expression. He also explores the ways in which tattoos have been stigmatized and misunderstood, shedding light on the stereotypes and biases that have long been associated with tattooed individuals.

The book is also visually stunning, with beautiful photographs and illustrations that capture the intricate details and vibrant colors of tattoos. Schonberger's writing is engaging and accessible, making the book a pleasure to read for both tattoo enthusiasts and those with a general interest in cultural history.

Overall, "The Language of Tattoos" is a thought-provoking and visually stunning exploration of an art form that has captivated people for centuries. Schonberger's insights and expertise make this book a must-read for anyone interested in the cultural significance of tattoos.

Interesting, but I hoped for more. This is mostly a look at some typical tattoo images and the history of how they came to be. The history was interesting, and I liked how the sections were divided by topic or style. I just wished there was more info included, as the short blurbs felt a bit lacking.

Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for this eARC in exchange for an honest review!

First things first, I do find this book fascinating. There are 130 tattoos and meanings on these pages, which is a great idea. The only issue is that these are older/more generic tattoos that have been talked about for probably forever. I feel this would be an excellent buy for someone new to being tattooed.

It’s 4 stars from me. You can’t fault a book for me being old and jaded :D

An interesting book that explains the meaning behind different tattoos. It groups tattoos into themes such as love and faith and spirituality proving related illustrations and the general meaning behind the tattoos. A good introduction to tattoo meanings, however I personally would have preferred photographs of a range of tattoos for each subject feather than the illustrations. An interesting baseline book.

Thank you Quatro , White Lion and NetGalley for this ARC in return for my honest review.

The Language of Tattoos is a stunning display of 130 tattoo images and meanings. The illustrations are stunning, and the descriptions in depth. There are suggestions for which styles are best for the images or which other symbols can be added to enforce the meaning. However, I was most intrigued by how each begins with a symbol's original history, including specific people who may have created it, historical meaning, or how myth or religion either started it or added to it.

I would recommend this book to those who love tattoo culture, symbolism, and who are interested in planning their next meaningful tattoo, whether for a sleeve or a single image.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the free ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

The Language of Tattoos is a non-fiction book about the origins and meanings behind 130 different tattoo symbols. I love tattoos and had hoped for more with this book. It showcases 130 symbols/tattoos but they're the basic run of the mill ones you see on tattoo walls and I'd have lived to have seen more variation and symbols and their meanings too. Don't get me wrong it's still an informative read but I had higher expectations unfortunately.

This would make a terrific gift! I find tattoos so interesting. This book has amazing drawings of all different types of popular tattoos and their meanings. I’m sprinkled all over and 7 of my 9 were in this book.

It was interesting reading a book that tells us the history of tattoos. It shows and explains some of the most iconic designs and symbols tattooed through time.

While I enjoyed reading, it would be better if the book organization were different. Some text is about the previous image and others are about the next image. With time this gets slightly confusing.

But overall, this is an interesting book to read especially if you like tattoos like me.

The Language of Tattoos by Nick Schonberger is a brief and interesting look into some of the most significant and popular tattoos. The book is divided by the themes these symbols represent like, grief, spirituality, strength, resilience, etc. Each image is beautifully drawn in a specific tattooing style and accompanied by a short explanation of its history and significance.

I really enjoyed the beautiful illustrations in this book. I also appreciated that the author acknowledged the cultural appropriation involved in the tattooing industry. He made sure to include the original culture that each symbol originated from and how its meaning may or may not have changed.

As a tattoo enthusiast, I found this to be a perfect combination of art and information. Highly recommend if you’re interested in the topic.

This title released on November 22, 2022.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

This was a brief insight into the art of tattoos and the most popular styles and designs. For each design, there's a short explanation of the origin and meaning, and I like that I got to learn something new. The book is aesthetically pleasing and I liked the way it was composed.

This was so fun to read!

This book focuses mostly on traditional western style and Japanese style tattooing and explains the traditional meanings for a lot of common tattoos. If you like art history and/or tattoos, this will make a really nice, easy read.

This book is great! A simple, but fun concept. A collection of tattoos and their meaning, history, and origins. Stunning and vibrant artwork as well!

Though interesting to see tattoo meanings, some of the descriptions are short and not elaborated further. While other descriptions are long on history stuff and it "became a flash tattoo" that doesn't relatie to the meaning of the tattoo talked about at all. While reading you immideatly know where this person comes from... Anything America related are way bigger descriptions while the other styles are left hanging more with some exceptions. I liked the images but it's very much one style even while other styles could have been chosen as well. Sadly it's either very western American style based tattoo meanings or eastern japanese style tattoos that with some lack. But the world over is bigger then only that and I missed that in here. Some tattoos that are "even popular now" I never have seen anywhere. Overall good images, interesting but it could be so much more.

I'll admit up front that I'm not the most knowledgeable about the history of tattoos and their meanings, so this book was a great fun read for me. I think it's best suited to people like me who don't already have a ton of knowledge, as some of the information might be obvious to anyone with more experience with tattoos. Even then, some of the meanings are so omni-present that I found them obvious and wished there was a bit more depth or history to pad those entries. The examples of tattoos included were wonderful!
