Absolutely loved this from KL Slater. The hook of the missing thriller writer was instantly intriguing, but what captured my imagination was the rich life she created around Eve - her relationship with her mother and daughter, the toxicity of her husband Hugo and jealousy of his new girlfriend. It’s utterly believable, and adds so much drama and tension to the story.

I didn’t see the twist coming but thought it was cleverly hinted at throughout - an excellent read from one of my favourite authors!

This was just okay. I was a little surprised with the twist, but I feel the book ended abruptly. I will read another book by this author.

This book! I thought I had it figured out so many times, and I was completely wrong. As Eve digs deeper into the disappearance of her friend Phillipa, there were a few different people I thought may be responsible. The end will completely blow you away! I love k.l slaughters book, and this one didn't disappoint either!

Eve is an audio book narrator whose life fell apart last year when her dad died, her husband left her and the author Philippa Roberts disappeared. Now a manuscipt has been found hidden at Philippa's house and Eve is asked to return to her career and narrate the book. As she reads, she believes that Philippa has hidden a message within the text giving clues to her disappearance...
The Narrator is a psychological thriller set in the UK.
Philippa disappears on the night of a prestigious awards ceremony. Her friend Eve is concerned for her safety but the police investigation has run cold. A manuscript of the 10th book in the series is discovered hidden and Eve is convinced that the obvious mistakes in the text are clues which will lead to finding Philippa. The mystery is sustained well over the course of the book.
Meanwhile, Eve's personal life is in disarray. She has been forced to move in with her mum and abandon her career following her father's suicide and her husband's infidelity. I was spitting with rage at Eve's unreasonable and sneaky husband Hugo. His behaviour constantly undermines her and I was eager for her to get the better of him.
The book is written from Eve's first person perspective as well as that of the third person view of the author being held captive and an obsessed superfan. All of the viewpoints are intensely personal and create tension and concern about their situations.
The Narrator is an entertaining novel with an intriguing mystery, believable characters and a big twist.

Eve earns her living narrating books for audio editions. Lately work has dried up & she is back living with her mother. Her ex is causing trouble, wanting custody of their daughter Scarlet. . She had narrated all of Phillipa Roberts popular 'Tower series. There was a lot of publicity when Phillipa disappeared without trace but now an unpublished book has turned up & Eve is asked to narrate it. Leaving her five year old daughter with her mother she travels down to London. Whilst reading the first few chapters prior to recording she is concerned that there are so many inconsistencies. As she tries to find out why this might be, she also begins to feel she is being followed. What did happen to Phillipa? We also see what happened the night she disappeared.

When I open a K. L. Slater book I know I am in for a good read & this one was no exception! It kept me guessing & I really enjoyed it. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

Eve is a successful audiobook narrator reading crime fiction. Phillipa Roberts, a bestselling crime author and personal friend has written numerous books in a series. Then, she went missing and no one knows why. This put an end to Eve’s work.

Eve’s husband left her and their daughter, Scarlet, 5, which necessitated that they move out of London and live with Eve’s widowed mother, Viv. Eve’s ex-husband is living the high life in a beautiful home with his pregnant girlfriend, Saskia. Eve is trying desperately to make some money working at a bar.

When Phillipa’s wife discovers an unknown manuscript in their attic, the publisher is ecstatic and they want Eve to go to London and record the audiobook. She is thrilled to do so, however, leaving Scarlet with her mother for a month make her sad.

When Eve starts to read the latest novel, she discovers inconsistencies with how Phillipa has written the characters in other books. This causes her great concern that the author might be trying to tell them something. However, Eve soon learns that trying to investigate this is a dangerous undertaking and it appears someone wants to shut her up. Now, she is convinced that Phillipa did not leave on her own. Could she have been abducted? If so, why?

This book grabbed me and when I thought I had it all figured out, boy was I wrong! I couldn’t help but be suspicious of most of the characters. This author has done it again with a very twisty, puzzling and good mystery. Enjoy!

A popular writer disappears and her books narrator Eve tries to solve the mystery. Eve herself just started recovering from the personal issues in her life but it is not easy process when so many factors are working against her.
Easy read with totally unexpected twist in the end. 3.5⭐

What a good book! It’s interesting and has a big twist!
Eve is the voice of audio books, and has narrated the first nine books of her favorite author’s series. When this author, Phillipa Roberts, goes missing, a tenth book of the series is found hidden in her attic.
Although the police have tried to find out what happened to author Phillipa, to no avail, the publisher decides to go ahead and record the narration.
While narrating the book, Eve notices notable discrepancies in the characters behavior, so different from the e previous nine books.
So begins the journey to find out what happened to Phillipa Roberts.

This book jumped back and forth between the lives of Eve, her ex-husband, the author Phillipa, and the number one fan club member.
It was fast reading and engaging.
4.5 stars for the big twist!
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC, in return for my honest review!

I enjoyed this latest story from KL Slater. I like that her stories are stand alone and you don't need to know any back stories.
I was led astray with the twists and turns and didn't see the ending coming.

I wanted to love this book as I really like this author's books, but I just kind of liked it. I feel the idea was right there but didn't hit the jackpot for me. I truly enjoyed that last twist and I think it was reslly clever and I wasn't expecting it, but my problem is the rest of the book. I never felt like the story was wrapping me up in it. That's something I like qith this kind if books and this one missed it for me. There was a lot of conversations between characters and I'm not really attracted by it. The characters aren't that well described, I needed a bit more of them. The one we supposed to hate is a male character called Hugo and thats the only one I feel was written in an amazing way, because even if it's hate, you feel something for him. But the rest of the characters were a failure for me. The entire personality of Eve is annoying and I hated the way she is simply existing and that sounds so awful hahaha but her and her mom were just a bit annoying. There's characters also that don't seem to have a lot in the story but I understand it was written that way so you couldn't know what was happening. There were stories totally unnecessary for the plot that helped to nothing too tho and I don't enjoy that.
In general, the book needed more twists to be able to keep me intrigued. If it weren't for that twist by the end I'd just hate the book. I was bored but Thales a big twist happened and made everything better. I just don't know if it was enough. The plot was there, the big twist was there, but I feel there was something missing and I hate to give this review to this author because I love her books but I have to be honest and I don't find other way of reviewing than giving my real opinion on books.
Do I recommend it? Yes, to readers who like slow burns with a bit of an intense background in stories.

Thank you to the publisher, the author and netgalley for the arc of this book!!!!

A popular author, Philippa Robert’s has been missing for months. No one knows what happened to her. Philippa’s wife said she was happy. Is she missing or dead? Something happened!

Eve has narrated all of her books. Eve is now living with her mother and has a small daughter after her divorce. With Philippa missing things were placed on hold.

She gets a phone call from the publisher saying that Philippa’s wife has found a manuscript and they want Eve to narrate it. This requires a trip to London and she has to have her mother watch her daughter. Neither are thrilled. To complicate matters her ex husband Hugo takes their daughter to his home and things become complicated fast. He has a girlfriend and they can provide their daughter with a stable home.

As Eve starts her new job she thinks the manuscript is trying to tell her something! This novel is complicated with a lot going on.

Out now January 6, 2023. Thank you @netgalley and author @klslater for this advanced copy.

The Narrator is twisty and gripping, a story that gets the blood pumping. Another keep you guessing till the end story from the Queen of Twist!

What does it take to rebuild your family? That is just what The Narrator, Eve is attempting to do after having her life crumble before her very eyes. In the past eighteen months, her father committed suicide, her husband had an affair and set up a home with her ex-colleague, Saskia and both her and her 5-year-old daughter are back living at home with her frail and aging mother. Her career as an audiobook narrator fell flat after all these tragedies began to weigh her down. She’s devastated but after a phone call about narrating a new book falls in her favour, she finally sees the light.

Eve loves being a mother to Scarlet. Her family dynamics aren’t what any parent thought they would be. She imagined being with the father to bring her up, but life rarely ends up being what you planned. She’s living one day at a time. she’s taking work where she can to just make ends meet. Her career meant everything to her – she last worked on the last DI Tower novel, a crime series penned by illustrious author, Phillipa Roberts. She was the voice of the series, and she was passionate about bringing it to life. When the author goes missing Eve feels it both personally and professionally. But when the mysterious tenth book is discovered hidden away, her publishers decide to go ahead with publication, a dedication to Phillipa with the blessing of her wife, Fleur.

I have read very few books by this author but what I have read I have just inhaled. Relatable characters, the unease, the chewing of nails, the sweat trickling down the back of your neck. These are all feeling I’m beginning to associate with K.L. Slater. The prologue sets the pace and instantly I was finding excuses not to put the book down. Forget about the chores, the only thing important at that point and time was finding the answers to every question the storyline spat out.

Hugo, Eve’s ex-husband, got to admit maybe part of the reason I was so emotionally in tune with this story was that he reminded me of my ex. Narcissistic, controlling, and devious to their blackened core. He’s not been a very good father to Scarlet, he regularly misses plans that have been prearranged and seems emotionally unavailable too. Eve was used to his cruelty towards her, but she refuses to allow Scarlet to experience the same thing. But now of course that he has a fancy home, a luxurious car, and a pregnant girlfriend to show off, he wants everything to do with Scarlet, it all adds up to another way of making Eve feel less than. But is he hiding something more than just his tendency to do anything to get his own way? Why is his office locked up tighter than Fort Knox?

K.L. Slater is fast becoming another favorite author when I need a psych thriller fix. The Narrator is definitely one of her best. There are just enough questions thrown out about each of the characters that the reader is as off-balance as the main character. The action unfolds from multiple perspectives in multiple time frames. And it is never confusing at all. In fact, I think it was one of the most seamless books I’ve read recently. Everything flowed smoothly. I didn’t guess the big reveal until literally the last moment. For that reason alone, it earns high marks – but everything else is pretty darn good too! For a full review, please visit Fireflies and Free Kicks. Eve is a narrator for Phillipa Roberts audio books however, after writing 9 books Phillipa disappears off the face off the earth. When cleaning out their home her wife mysteriously finds the 10th book in the attic however, when Eve is narrating it she notices some unfamiliarities.
Phillipa's disappearance plays on Eve who is sure there must be more to it and she's determined to find out.
This book had me guessing the entire time and I had no idea what Eve eventually unravelled.
A fantastic book that really keeps you guessing.

Wow what a twist! I didn't see that coming. This book is amazing and had me gripped all the way through. The story shows how we form opinions on people, with them not being who they seem.
Totally brilliant - everybody should read it.

A popular writer ends a fan favorite series and then disappears. Sounds familiar, right? This isn’t Misery. I almost wish it were. We get some insight into what is happening to the abducted writer. Not enough. The Narrator is the woman who has read all of the books in the series for the audiobooks. Since the author disappeared, the narrator’s life has fallen apart, so of course she needs to solve the disappearance. When she is asked to read a “found” new manuscript in the series, she immediately notices something is wrong. The characters and story are inconsistent with past books..

I enjoyed this book as long as I didn’t think about it too hard. I have to skim over the trope of a woman being cheated on and then having her ex and his mistress be somehow the respectable ones and trying to take her kid. Why does this keep getting written? What is happening is actually kind of predictable. When anyone is this vague…. So, the “twist” at the end isn’t surprising at all and is senseless and ridiculous if you look at it in any detail. Still, watching someone stumble around was entertaining, for the most part.

Not my favorite KL Slater book. I will continue to read them, though, because this isn’t the norm.
