I adored this book. Historical fiction is not my typical read, but I adore the author so thought I’d give it a listen. I am so glad I did. I adored this book. Eliza loses her beloved mother and receives word from the father she never knew. She leaves all she knows and travels across an ocean to meet her dad and entire family. This is a true rags to riches/Cinderella story horrible step-sisters and all. Against all odds, Eliza ultimately finds her way to to a wonderful life on her terms. The narration was enjoyable and added to the listening experience.

I like the authors contemporary novels set in Nantucket and happily listened to my first historical romance from her. Eliza Chapman is 21 and a ladies made in London. When her mother was dying to wrote to Eliza’s father letting him know of her existence. He is a very wealthy American, part of the Gilded set and provides funds for her to come to NYC and meet him and his family. Two half sisters are less than thrilled at their new “cousin” as she is being called. But Eliza settles in trying to learn about her father, his work and the society expectations.

I love the gilded age setting and Kelly throws in lots of nuggets of who sets the rules and things like a Vanderbilt dinner after the opera can go to 4 am. But there is a lot of this book that isn’t very plausible. The familiarity between with the staff and a household members would not have been allowed. I like Eliza learning about her fathers business and stock trading with Minnie. But read this not as representation of the time but as a fairy tale like Cinderella. It is enjoyable and a predictable. I always enjoy Kelley’s food and clothing descriptions. It is a proper romance with only a few kisses.

I listened to the audio book narrated by Leslie Howard and it made for easy listening. Accents and voices were used so I knew instantly which character was speaking. Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for an audiobook in exchange for a review.

This was a delightful read, One of Pamela Kelley’s best work in my opinion. Love stories from this time period. This story is about Eliza who discovers who her father is after her mother dies. She has been working as a lady’s maid and her father is very rich so she is going into an unknown situation. He sends for her and she travels from England to New York. Her father and grandmother are very welcoming but not the two sisters. Eliza begins to find her way becoming interested in her fathers real estate business and experiencing all high society has to offer. She garners several mens interest, but only really cares for one of them. She determines she will only marry for love.

Big thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media, for the Audio ARC of Gilded Girl

Ever since I read Luxe …WAY back when…. I have been chasing the gilded age romance high. Gilded Girl is a notable addition to the genre. It was VERY much a historical Cinderella story, especially in the beginning, which almost made me put it down but I kept going mostly due to the fabulous narrator. Leslie Howard added an enjoyable theatrical angle, particularly with the accents, Differentiating between characters with ease! Overall, this was an enjoyable lite romance not shocking or inventive but enjoyable nonetheless.
