The Alaskan wilderness is both beautiful and dangerous…..and a vicious criminal has chosen it as a setting for revenge.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Arliss Cutter was raised in rural Florida by his lawman grandfather. He learned a great deal from his Grumpy, including how to be a fantastic tracker. Military service overseas was followed by different posts while with the Marshal Service, leading him to his current job in Alaska. In Breakneck, the fifth outing in this series by Marc Cameron, Cutter and his partner Lola Teariki have just been assigned to a security detail for a judicial gathering in Fairbanks. The most celebrated attendee is U.S. Supreme Court Justice Charlotte Morehouse, who has brought along her teenage daughter to experience some of the breathtaking Alaskan sites. Justice Morehouse is known to be a bit controversial…her positions on rulings have at different times angered people on both ends of the political spectrum. What neither she nor her protective detail know, however, is that she has been targeted for death by a high level leader in the Russian Bratva. He blames Justice Morehouse for the death of a former lover, and has determined that this is the time and place to make her pay. He has assembled a crew of cold-blooded killers to penetrate the shield of protection around her. A train ride through remote and rugged terrain will lead Cutter and his agents into a deadly trap, and it will take all of Cutter’s skills to keep the judge, and her daughter, alive.

The author uses his extensive knowledge of the Marshal Service and the state of Alaska where he now lives to great effect in the Cutter novels, At the heart of each is a well-plotted page-turner, but the reader is also gifted with glimpses into different aspects of Alaskan life, including that of the Native inhabitants. It is a wonderful introduction to much of what is Alaskan life (although i have to admit that I might be a better candidate for this sort of armchair traveling than I would be to travel to a town where you need to check whether or not the polar bears are feeding at a particular end of town). The characters are nuanced, and the story grips you quickly and doesn’t let go. Fans of this and Marc Cameron’s other series featuring Jericho Quinn as well as the Tom Clancy/Jack Ryan novels he has authored for the Tom Clancy estate will certainly enjoy Breakneck. Readers of Lee Child and Nevada Barr may also find this series appealing. It also brought to mind the 1990 movie Narrow Margin (with Gene Hackman and Anne Archer), given the train setting. Many thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the advanced reader’s copy.

My favorite of the series so far:)

I am so very pleased that I have found another series by this author that I have fallen more and more in love with (I'm a HUGE fan of the Jericho Quinn series as well).

Arliss Cutter is not your average protagonist. In fact, he is a hard man who rarely smiles, who tends to kill more of the bad guys than the US Marshall Service would like, but a man who has a heart of gold. You just have to find it.

In that vein, he will and does do anything - and I mean ANYTHING - to protect those he loves. That circle is pretty small....Mim, the boys, Constance and Lola. There may be a couple of other friends he would jump in to help, but those are his inner and very most precious circle.

The last 4 books have let us see into Arliss life. We have been given more and more information on the back story of his life, of how his life diverted from his brothers life...and the why behind that split. I think as readers, we knew where things might be heading, and I have liked the slow burn that Mr. Cameron has put us all on.

As usual, each of these books has some very MAJOR bad guys who do very bad things. There is usually a lot of killing so nothing new there and as usual, Lola and Arliss are right in the middle of everything. But I will say, this one took things to an even higher level - for both of our MC's.

Without going into spoilers, let me just say that we have finally made some progress on many fronts, but there is one particular front that made me smile. No - nothing is set in stone - but I'm liking where things are heading. And the bad guys in this one...let's just say...they got what they deserved.

Now the wait begins for the next book in this series. I can not wait :)

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC. The opinions above are mine and mine alone.

Join Arliss Cutter and his team of Marshalls & FBI agents in this non-stop action thriller. The scenery is breath-taking and the stunts perfect for a movie.

US Marshall Service is assigned to protect judges attending a gathering in Alaska. Justice Charlotte Morehouse's teenage daughter, Ramona, is accompanying her and they have planned a sight-seeing agenda. Russian mobsters are out to punish the judge for her conviction of Volkov's sister who died in prison.

High tension, edge of your seat adventure in the wilds of Alaska. There are even Grumpy's recipes to get you in the mood.

I thoroughly enjoyed this latest Marc Cameron Arliss Cutter novel.

If you enjoy series that build on characters this is a good one. The characters are complex and believable. Plot is twisting so not easily figured out. Good read

Another amazing adventure of Arliss Cutter. Marc Cameron continues to keep the character evolving and the reader involved. Arliss works in one of the most beautiful places in the world and works to be protect it and the people who live there. Part of the charm of the story and character are that when I think of Alaska, it's characteristics are also similar to those of Arliss.
I will continue to read the adventures of Arliss as they are written and recommend this series often.

I was given an ARC for an honest review.

The publisher's blurb isn't bad, but there is so much more to both the story and the backstory. Great law enforcement novel mostly set in the beautiful but harshest state.

Arliss and Lola are back in what might be the best book in the series so far. The author is a retired deputy US Marshal, and it shows in the frustration of the people trying to protect judges - or a Supreme Court Justice here - who insist on living life as if they were not in the spotlight. But they persevere and put their lives on the line because that is who they are.

Arliss still rarely smiles, and Lola still exercises obsessively. They have terrific, platonic chemistry which makes this series such a fun read. Arliss' lack of smiling in no way means he doesn't have deep feelings, especially where his people - including his sister-in-law and her children - are concerned. This novel is action-packed with a full slate of bad guys to hate.

Recommended to everyone, especially lovers of law-enforcement tales.

Not family friendly due to profanity and violence.

Marc Cameron takes us on a fascinating trip through the Alaskan wilderness and stages one of the most interesting train rides you might ever take! Breakneck is a good title for the adventures with Arliss Cutter and gang. I sailed through the novel as Cameron had me going right from the start. Throw in the Russian mafia and a Supreme Court Justice and the action has high stakes!
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC.

This is the 5th book in the Arliss Cutter series and possibly his finest work to date. The story opens with a series of unexplained murders. A crabbing boat is found partially sunk without anyone on board. Folks in the Homer area are brutally attacked and murdered but the killers miss seeing the small child who saw it all.
A supreme court justice is attending a conference in Amchorage with her young daughter and wants to go on a train excursion to a remote area and Russian gangsters want to kill her and livestream the event to the world. Arliss and Lola are tasked with protecting the justice and her daughter and face off with the Russians.
It is going to be a fight to the finish,

I like this kind of books; with a fast, no-nonsense story and with excellent characters. The plot is also good, and it makes this book very entertaining.

Fast paced, action packed thoroughly enjoyable book for fans of Arliss Cutter. The train fight and the opening up of Mim's and Arliss relationship were beautifully brought out in this Alaskan thriller.
Eagerly anticipating the next release.
Thank you Netgalley for providing me an advance copy of the book for my unbiased review.

Alex, a spoiled son of the Russian mob decides to ambush Sam Benjamin on the lonely Alaskan highway and is cruelly killed, the vehicle hidden to slow down the search for the missing trooper.

The entire Alaska State Troopers cadre discovers the body and clues left that clearly identify the Russian mob and sets out to avenge their fallen comrade. Both the hunted and the hunters are bent on capturing or eliminating the other!

There is an annual convention being held in Juneau for the Chief Justices of the American Court System and Alex hears that the AST will be providing security for the event. He plans to kill a U.S. Supreme Court justice as well as the majority of the AST.

The criminal minds are ruthless and dedicated to killing their enemies which includes anyone in law enforcement or the judicial system. Arliss Cutter and Chief Justice Morehouse are excellent candidates for the rampage.

We’ve read and reviewed other entries to this series and always find them action-packed and fast-paced as well as intelligent and atmospheric. It’s fascinating to read of Alaska—our northern mysterious giant frontier. This read is engaging and entertaining and can be read as a standalone. 5 stars – CE Williams

The sheer intensity and excitement of Marc Cameron’s Breakneck is best illustrated using a simple formula: US Marshall Arliss Cutter + the Alaskan wilderness + the Russian Bratva hellbent on revenge = an epic battle on a speeding train. The fervent action is unrelenting, the death toll extensive and the odds for survival slim. Strap in and hang on because it’s one hell of a ride.

Arliss and his partner Lola Teariki are assigned to the protection detail of Supreme Court Justice Charlotte Morehouse as she attends a judicial conference in Alaska. Guarding the justice and her daughter seems routine until an uninvited guest shows up at the conference and is shot dead by law enforcement. Eschewing advice to cut the trip short and return to DC, Morehouse and her daughter go through with plans to ride a sightseeing train into the Alaskan wilderness. But they are unaware there are members of the Russian mafia on board with plans to kill her – in retribution for the role she played in the death of the Russian boss’ wife – and livestream it to the world. Now it’s up to Arliss, Lola and the full protection team to repel the attack and keep the justice and her daughter alive. Even if it means putting themselves in the crosshairs.

Breakneck builds the tension from the beginning, continuing to ratchet up anxiety levels until it explodes in a monumental gun battle and fisticuffs in and on top of a train traversing the Alaskan back country. The Russian mobsters are incredibly brutal and unrepentant, singularly focused on their objective with no qualms about taking out anyone in their way. But Arliss and Lola are resolute and undaunted, mission success the only thing they will accept. Which makes for a classic engagement between good vs. evil. The unstoppable force vs. the immovable object. A fight to the death with neither side willing to entertain failure. It’s glorious.

However, there’s more to this book than the Russian revenge storyline and it’s all in the name of character and series development. First, Lola’s character gains more depth, emotion and respect through her actions and growing confidence…and the blossoming of her relationship with Joe Bill Bracket is sweet to witness. Next, the pursuit of the truth in the death of Ethan Cutter is ongoing, with Arliss and Mim chasing down leads and growing in their suspicions that his death was no accident. And maybe most intriguing is that Arliss and Mim finally start addressing their repressed but obvious feelings, making it possible they will act on their sexual tension despite Ethan’s ghost looming over them. Will they or won’t they? You’ll just have to keep reading to find out.

The Arliss Cutter series is now five books in and has no indications of slowing down anytime soon, which is excellent news for thriller fans. Breakneck is fantastic on its own, but also does a tremendous job of moving ongoing storylines forward, primes the pump for more adventures and provides opportunities for personal relationships to grow. Marc Cameron continues to impress, and he has endless possibilities with where to take the series next. So make sure you are on board the Arliss train. It’s going to continue to be an entertaining journey.

Breakneck is the 5th installment in the Arliss Cutter series, and this action-packet adventure finds US Marshall Cutter and his partner, Lola Teariki, assigned to guard a Supreme Court Justice who is in Alaska to give a speech, then plans on sightseeing with her teenage daughter. However, a Russian mob boss is bent on revenge against the judge from a past sentencing. The Russian mob features prominently in this book, as they prepare to assassinate the judge, leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake, and the first half the book is devoted to their exploits, while several side stories occupy Cutter as well as Cutter’s sister in law, Mim. Overall, it’s full-throttle from start to finish with an engaging plot and more than enough action to satisfy fans of this series. I received an arc of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

As always, Arliss Cutter makes a great story. Arliss and Lola are a great tandem and I really enjoyed this book as much as the previous books in the series. The backdrop of Alaska adds a lot to the story as it makes normal decisions life or death. In this book, a Supreme Court Justice and her daughter wish to visit Alaska and the Marshalls are part of the protection plan. Someone is intent on causing the Justice harm and only Arliss and Lola can save the day. I enjoyed how they have developed Lola's character a bit more and move the relationships Arliss has with his family on a bit. I can't wait until the next book in this series.

This is the first book I’ve read in this series. The first part of the summary description tells of a dangerous train ride and the fight to survive in the wilderness. This didn’t happen until the last 25% of the book and I wondered if there would ever be action. The book was okay but I won’t be going back to read the earlier ones.

As the series continues, we find Arlie’s, the U.S. Marshall, protecting a Supreme Court Justice visiting with her daughter. The justice also happens to be the target of a revenge-seeking Russian mob boss. With lots of action plus the escalation of the relationship of the relationship between Arlie’s and Mim, the series gets better with each installment.

Excellent story and well told. Set in Alaska, Arliss Cutter and his partner Lola Teariki are tasked with protecting a visiting Supreme Court Justice and her daughter. While this all might seem to be rather innocuous -- some Russians bent on revenge and willing to kill indiscriminately come on the scene.

There is a good deal of violence and bloodshed so the squeamish should avoid reading. But for those looking for high adventure along with some smoldering love story, this book is for you.

I loved reading this book as it brought back memories of trips I've taken to our 49th state. The geography seems to add to the story which is of high adventure.

Definitely recommend this book very highly for those not afraid of a little blood. Great characters and they develop well.
