I bloody loved this book!

It was fun, relevant, relatable, funny and lively.

Truly a fun read, from characters to dual timeline, and it kept me guessing. Honestly, I had so much fun reading it and I wanted to read it all at once, yet didn't want it to end at the same time!

I will defiantly read more titles from this author, who is new to me.

Thank you, NetGalley, for the ARC!

A clever story about revenge. I found this book addictive to read just like the authors first book. You didn’t know who to trust & the ending was pretty clever! Well done :)
Will definitely look out for more by the author again!

Reading alternate timelines are my favorite thriller reads. I absolutely enjoyed this quick read of a thriller and I look forward to reading more by this author. The only thing I think it was lacking was character development, but I understand in some of these quick and fast paced reads, it can be hard to tie that in but overall, it was a good read!

The trip of a lifetime ends in murder
Maisie leaves her precarious home life in the UK to hike the West Coast Trail in Canada. She meets brother and sister Sera and Ric, and what begins as a fun-filled experience in a beautiful secluded setting quickly turns sour.
Twenty-five years later, a woman named Laura is panicked to learn that a body was found near the trail and the police suspect they're the bones of Sera. The secret she's been hiding for a quarter of a century is about to come out – and someone is determined to make sure she tells the truth, and pays the price, as she should have done back then. But what lengths will Laura go to in order to protect her carefully constructed family life?

This is a thrilling read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.

I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review.

‘The Hiking Trip’ is a gripping and twisty read that kept me hooked from beginning to end!

Maisie is on a big adventure, she has left all that she knows to go on her first-ever trip out of the UK to Canada to hike the West Coast Trail. She has been let down by her friend and is now on her own but she soon meets up with fellow hikers, brother and sister Sera and Ric. They set off full of enthusiasm but as the seclusion closes in around them, they soon find themselves in trouble.

Twenty-five years later Laura, mother and wife in the UK are terrified when she hears on the news that a body has been found on the West Coast Trail and that they believe them to be the body of the missing hiker, Sera. Laura’s secrets are going to unravel and it seems as if there is someone out there who is determined to make that happen!

I enjoyed the dual timeline aspect of the book as it allowed the reader to be drawn into the story from the off-set and helped to drive the building of tension throughout the story! I devoured this book in one sitting when I was sick in bed and I was thoroughly drawn into the story and wanted to find out what happened to Maise and Laura. There are frequent twists and turns, reveals and red hearings and once the end scenes kick in you just cannot put it down. The action and reveals at the end were brilliant. Did I work out the ending? Yeah, I did but it didn't matter as I enjoyed the smug feeling of knowing that I was right!

This was an entertaining read which I thoroughly enjoyed, let me know if you read it!

Probably one of the main reasons I work on crime, suspense and thriller fiction is because I can't resist a good twist. So if you're looking for a prime example of suspense fiction done right, you won't go far wrong by checking out Jenny Blackhurst's latest novel, THE HIKING TRIP.

The narrative is a masterclass in setting up the reader into just the right position before ripping the carpet from under their feet and flipping the entire narrative on its head. Reading the amount of books in the genre that I do, I've found it's increasingly hard for me to be truly surprised by a twist in a book but this one really grabbed me! I was totally not expecting it to go the way it did, and it was done perfectly. I read most of the book in one sitting because I just had to know what happened, and if you pick it up – which you should! – you'll be gripped too!

What a great way to start my reading off in 2023.

Thank you to the publisher, author and blog tour organiser for gifting me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

While I typically don't enjoy dual timelines, this book had me intrigued right away. A hiking trip gone wrong on the West Coast Trail 25 years earlier, and a woman hell bent on keeping her family - and her secret - safe. Some parts were a little predictable, but the ending was not! Did not see that coming at all.

A fun quick read (read it during a plane trip), I truly enjoyed this book.

Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

A dual timeline book 20 years apart tells the story of a hiking trip gone wrong. Maisie’s new friend is murdered on the hiking trip and she is the star witness. The dual timeline feeds in snippets from the hiking trip as Maisie tries to keep her current life from falling apart. I was hooked on this story and could not put it down. This is a great psychological thriller!

Good but not great! I don't think this one counts as a psychological thriller as I am missing the psychological part. It is however a solid thriller with mysterious characters. Unfortunately they weren't very likeable but I feel like that is the case with most thrillers. I did enjoy the story though!

In 1999, Maisie is determined to find her own independence by hiking the West Coast in Canada. She joins up with with new friends, but her fun filled beautiful hike quickly turns into a nightmare.
Twenty- five years later, Laura hears the news of remains found along the West Coast Trail and panics. She's built a new identity and a wonderful life with her husband and children, but someone is determined to get the truth by targeting her and her family.
This was a quick read, easy thriller for me. I like how the storyline jumps from past to present, leaving you guessing at the end of each POV chapter. The endnotes was a little postcard for me but I still enjoyed the book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Really good book.. it kept you gripped from the beginning. I like how it goes between the 2 different years the past and then 20.years later. I did not see the twist coming. But I did feel the ending was rushed and it all got explained very quickly. But a good read all in all

This is a gripping novel written by author Jenny Blackhurst and I loved it. The build up of tension is truly here in this novel and will keep you up for literally hours.

The blurb reads
"The trip of a lifetime ends in murder

Maisie leaves her precarious home life in the UK to hike the West Coast Trail in Canada. She meets brother and sister Sera and Ric, and what begins as a fun-filled experience in a beautiful secluded setting quickly turns sour.

Twenty-five years later, a woman named Laura is panicked to learn that a body was found near the trail and the police suspect they're the bones of Sera. The secret she's been hiding for a quarter of a century is about to come out – and someone is determined to make sure she tells the truth, and pays the price, as she should have done back then. But what lengths will Laura go to in order to protect her carefully constructed family life?"

I enjoyed reading about Maisie many years ago and found the characters really relatable and interesting. Laura is a normal woman that we meet in this novel and we follow her on this journey of who is actually Laura and whey is she so unnerved about this discovery?! Laura is questioning everything and everyone around her and the novel is super intense and keeps the readers attention.

The plot of this novel is so good that I just could not put it down. I loved the characters and how they developed throughout the novel.

Thanks to NetGalley, Jenny Blackhurst and the publishers for allowing me arc in exchange for my honest review.

Oh I enjoyed this one! Told in a dual timeline, there are plenty of surprises when we find out what exactly happened on the Canadian hike in 1999! Plenty of dodgy characters who are certainly not who they seem!
Enjoyable thriller I would recommend this one.

In the present day, Laura and Rob have a wonderful life with their two young children, Faye and George, and their energetic dog, Archie. Just as we meet her, Laura’s perfect existence is threatened when a radio news report broadcasts the shocking news that human remains have been found on a hiking trail in Canada that Laura visited in her teens.

Alongside this, there is a dual timeline beginning in 1999 which shows teenager Maisie on her first adventure away from home. After Maisie is stood up by her best friend and travelling companion, Ruth, she meets siblings Sera and Ric and they quickly decide to embark upon the trail together.

Everything about this tightly written story intrigued me from the outset. Jenny Blackhurst’s signature dark humour and attention to detail brought this story to life, almost as though a friend was sharing their story with me over a glass of something. Riveting and surprising, I could never have predicted where this story would lead or the events as they unfolded. It’s safe to say that I won’t be tackling a solo hiking trip any time soon. I’m already looking forward to reading whatever Jenny writes next.

Wow I was hooked to this from the start. It is highly suspenseful and has a dual timeline of past and present which was easy to follow. I love the cover of the book, the plot and even the characters. It has an enthralling mystery vibe. With a shocking suprise ending. It is tied up nicely and everything makes sense. The characters are strong and well developed. I highly suggest you read this if you like a good physcological thriller.

After being let down by her friend at the last minute, Maisie leaves the UK & flies to Canada to hike the West Coast Trail alone. Once there she meets brother & sister Seraphina (Sera) and Ric & when it seems they have lost the money to be able to pay for their travels, Maisie impulsively offers to lend them some money. They join her on the hike & it starts off as a fun-filled experience: Sera is beautiful & Maisie is a little overawed at first but Sera seems friendly enough, whilst her brother Ric is quieter, but Maisie thinks he may be attracted to her.

As they travel on, the friendships between the three become fraught with tension & the siblings are always fighting with each other. Ric ends up leaving them, saying he'll catch up later, & Maisie is left with a sulky Sera, but worse is to come. Over two decades later, Laura is happily married & has two children & is completely unprepared for the news that the remains of a skeleton have been found on the trail, believed to be those of missing hiker, Seraphina. Laura has kept a big secret about what happened for all of these years but it looks like the truth is finally going to come out & it may possibly destroy her life.

The narrative is told in a dual timeline, Maisie back then & Laura in the present. It becomes difficult to empathise with Maisie as the story goes on as she is way too naïve & clingy. The pace is fairly brisk & it keeps the attention well, but the main issue is that it is far too obvious what the twists & reveals are going to be. I did enjoy reading though & the cover is eye-catching. I can only rate this one 3.5 stars (rounded down) due to the predictability.

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Canelo, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
