Dark Corners by Megan Goldin
Podcaster Rachel Krall is on another adventure. Called by the FBI to speak to an inmate in a Florida correctional facility, Rachel gets tangled up in an unexpected situation.
Girls are missing and some found have been dead. Was it the inmate’s doing or is something else afoot? Because influencer Maddison Logan is now missing, Rachel attends a social media convention in Daytona Beach seeking information. Is the girl another victim of the prisoner or just taking a break? This could all lead to an interesting podcast for Rachel. Though warned by the FBI to go home, Rachel barrels ahead digging for information.
All loose ends come together in this mystery, along with some added unnecessary information. Sometimes it’s best to just say “The End.” My thanks to #StMartinsPress and #NetGalley for this ARC for my review, which will be enjoyed by Rachel Krall fans and most mystery lovers.

The FBI believe a Terrance Bailey is a serial killer but can't prove it. He's soon to be released from prison for break and enter and police need something to keep him locked up. When a podcaster visits Terrance in prison soon after she disappears with the only clue being to contact Rachel Krall. Rachel a famous podcaster of true crime is contacted by the FBI to help find the last woman to visit Terrance before something bad happens to her.
This is a fast paced story that keeps you reading. This was a good read and I thoroughly enjoyed all the suspense and the characters in the story. The action was great and kept you wondering what was going to happen next. Can't wait for the authors next book. Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the chance to read this book. I would definitely buy this book!!

Was super excited to read more Rachel Krall. And I am hopeful to read more in the future.
Megan Goldin knows how to keep you intrigued, with a thrilling story. I was hooked from the very beginning and continued to be invested until the very end. Although this is the second book in the Rachel Krall series you do not need to.read the first book Night Swim (although I highly recommend it). This can.be read as a standalone. I look forward to reading more Rachel Krall in the future.

“The scariest monster is the one that hides in plain sight.”
“Dark Corners” is as breathtaking and exciting as Goldin’s other books! A serial killer, a unique tattoo, a missing influencer, a popular podcaster, and murder make this a book you don’t want to miss! And don’t forget that awesome cover.
I’ve never listened to a podcast but Rachel’s podcast was engrossing and attention-grabbing! I don’t recall much about Rachel from “Night Swim” but I am an instant fan. I enjoyed observing her as she looked into the next subject for her podcast, a popular and mysterious influencer who is missing.
Her attendance at BuzzCon and the influencers she meets are wild! I’ve never given any thought to the work it takes to be an influencer. If any of this is true, it’s an exhausting career that is competitive and brutal.
There are some clever and unexpected twists in the final chapters and the suspense skyrockets! Rachel is an amazing character and I hope to read more about her!! I alternated between the ebook and the audiobook and highly recommend the audiobook!

Podcaster Rachel Krall is back in this second book of the series. Readers will learn a lot about social media influencers in this twisty thriller. The mystery man has quite an interesting condition that sets off alarms, but a little too late it seems for his victims. FBI agent Martinez is a welcomed addition to the mix. Hopefully he will be back in the next book. Mystery lovers as well as psychological thriller readers will enjoy this fast paced story. Recommended!

I fell in love with the Rachel Krall series in Night Swim. I was so excited to get to read another Rachel Krall book. I love Rachel's character. She is a very strong, independent, resourceful FMC who won't back down from a fight. In this story, she ends up working with FBI Agent Joe Martinez. I had some issues with this relationship turned love interest. I just didn't feel like it was well established enough to be believable. I also felt like some of the plot points were predictable, although I liked how things turned out in the end. I also thought the author's portrayal of influencers was interesting. Overall, this was a fun read. I was invested in the story and had to know how everything turned out. I will definitely read more by this author!

DARK CORNERS is the second book in the Rachel Krall series. I liked THE NIGHT SWIM a lot more, but this was still a solid read!
I liked the multiple perspectives and the transcripts from Rachel’s podcast sprinkled between some of the chapters. There are a lot of moving parts to this story, which I enjoyed. It’s hard to explain and might just be a pacing issue, but at times I felt bored. Even though I wanted to know how everything would unfold, I wasn’t very eager to keep picking the book back up.
Goldin can keep the Rachel Krall books coming and I’ll continue to read them. Rachel is a strong female MC and I really enjoy the podcast element. Overall I liked this one, but it wasn’t as strong as THE NIGHT SWIM in my opinion!

Rachel Krall, a famous true crime podcaster known for her expert investigative abilities is called to Florida by the FBI. She’s been summoned to talk to a dangerous prisoner,Terrence Bailey, who’s only had one visiter while being locked up. The visiter was Madison Logan, a van life influencer, who has no connection to Terrence but investigators find a clue written on the table during Madison and Terrence’s recorded visit: “bring me Rachel Krall”.
When Rachel arrives in Florida, the FBI informs her that after Madison’s visit with Terrence, she’s gone missing. It’s up to Rachel, and the FBI, to find Madison before Terrence is released from prison in 48 hours but digging into her disappearance has put Rachel’s life in danger.
I didn’t read the first book in this series, Night Swim, but this one read as if it were a stand-alone. It started off sluggishly slow, so much that when I put the book down to take a break, it was hard to pick back up again. I had almost given up on the book after Florida’s “mountains” were described at the beginning of the book. I’m glad I finished it because I liked most of the characters, the suspense, the storyline, and the twist at the end.

4.5 stars! Another great read from Megan Goldin! Lots of turns and twists that made me want to keep on reading. This is the second Rachel Krall book, but it can be read as a standalone novel. The short chapters made that easy to do. The flashbacks throughout the book were a tad confusing at first, but once the plot got going it all comes together. I thought the ending was well done as well. I really enjoyed reading Dark Corners! I will post about Dark Corners on my bookstagram- @bookofthemeg on publish day- 8/8!

Dark Corners was the second book involving character Rachel Krall but this story easily reads as a standalone.
Krall is a true crime podcaster who is brought into a missing woman investigation in Daytona, Florida. Maddison Logan, a well-known social media influencer has disappeared. Her last contact was with Terrence Bailey, a man in prison and a suspect in a series of murders six years prior. But how could Bailey be connected with Logan and is her disappearance because of him? Krall digs deeper into Logan’s life and the social media influencer world in an attempt to find out more. But her investigation puts her more at risk and soon she is more involved than she ever intended.
What I liked: I really like Rachel’s character and while I had not read The Night Swim, I didn’t find any issues with reading this book first. I enjoyed the investigative elements to this book and the story moved at an appropriate pace.
What didn’t work for me: While I was interested in the story and outcome, I wouldn’t consider this book a page-turner. The ending fell a little flat for me. I also didn’t find the love connection very authentic but I could see how that relationship may work in future installments. But it felt unnecessary in this book.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and would read more by this author.

Rachel Krall, our favorite podcaster, returns from The Night Swim in an intense and gripping story. This is a suspenseful novel that builds and never fails to hold interest. I was flipping the pages excitedly. While it delved a bit more into social media influencers than I usually care for, I found it highly interesting. I am hoping we get Rachel Krall in another installment. She is a wonderful, complex character.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press for a widget of the ARC through NetGalley.

We dive back in with Rachel Krall as the FBI ask for her help to find an influencer who met with a prison inmate and then disappeared. Rachel realizes that the best way to learn more about the influencer is to become one herself. Not wanting to be recognized as Rachel Krall from her podcast, she brushes off her old running Instagram account and joins a large influencer event. The more she learns about the missing influencer and the lifestyle in general, the more things begin to smell bad.
I enjoyed spending time with Rachel Krall again. I love her go get 'em attitude and drive to speak for victims and find the truth. This book felt a little slower than the first one, and a bit more predictable too. With that said, I did still enjoy the story and Rachel Krall as a character - I hope that we get more from her in the future. Just like the Night Swim, I highly recommend listening to the audiobook as it captures that podcast element so well.

Thank you to @netgalley @macmillan.audio and @stmartinspress for the gifted copy of this book.

I really enjoyed this story of a serial killer who was somehow tangled up with a bunch of internet “influencers.” It was good to read about Rachel Krall & her podcast again & the mystery kept me guessing! It was a quick, interesting read.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily posting a review. All opinions are my own.
Megan Goldin has crafted another multilayered thriller with Dark Corners, this one continuing the mystery-solving adventures of Rachel Krall, the protagonist The Night Swim. And while I don’t know that I felt this one hit as hard as that book, I still enjoyed it overall.
I love how Megan Goldin takes advantage of having a true-crime podcaster unraveling the case, including excerpts from the podcast along with the unfolding narrative. And they never feel like we’re just getting the same information twice, but it’s actually a game of figuring out how the pieces from the backstory of the crime fit with the present.
I was also deeply invested in figuring out how the incarcerated/soon-to-be-released Terence Bailey and the missing Maddison were connected. There’s a lot of questions about him, but there’s also suspicions about her too. When all was revealed, I was blown away.
And while I was initially a bit thrown off by this additional perspective to the ones involved investigating the crime, there was a purpose to their perspective too in contributing to the disconcerting nature of the case.
The one minor drawback for me was Rachel herself. I feel like she had so much more personal investment in the sexual assault case of the prior book, whereas she was roped into this one based on her acclaim for that case. She didn’t develop much, and were it not for the fact that both the main victim and the main person of interest were drawn to her reputation, I don’t know if it made a difference being a Rachel Krall adventure or just another standalone with a new protagonist.
However, this more or less fulfilled my expectations for what I want out of a good thriller. If you’re a fan of the genre, I recommend checking it out!

I received an advanced reader’s copy of Dark Corners by Megan Goldin from the publisher via NetGalley.
The plot in this story kept me engaged because I was curious how it would all be resolved at the end. I didn’t connect with Rachel Krall as much in this story but I was able to understand why she made the choices she made and why she continued her investigation even if it put her life at risk. But, I felt she was a bit of a contradictory character because she’d taken precautions after having been threatened in the past and she was careless at times in her pursuit of the truth.
Overall I found this story to be engaging and picked it up whenever I had free time to finish reading it.

This was one of my highly anticipated books! I loved The Night Swim and when I found out that this was book 2, that excitement increased. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype for me. I really enjoyed book when compared to this. I felt like there were too many "holes" in this story. There was a lot going on and I felt disconnected and bit confused. I did not really enjoy the whole influencer POV. It was not exciting and left me a little bored. With that being said, I still love Goldin's writing, this book just wasn't the read for me.

Rachel Krall, the true crime podcaster from The Night Swim is back! This time she's been asked to assist the FBI in a missing person case by visiting a suspected serial killer in prison. The mystery takes her into the world of social media influencers where she secretly searches for clues to the disappearances.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast read with loads of excitement. There was plenty of action to keep me turning pages.
4 star read for me.

Really enjoyed this book. It kept me guessing what was going to happen next. If you like her other books you’ll enjoy this one.

Interesting inclusion of social media influencers in the midst of a thriller. Megan Goldin has hit the ball out of the park with this thriller. Rachel Krall, who has recently caused an innocent man to be released from jail after her podcast, is asked by the FBI to travel to Florida to help on a case. There she meets agent Joe Martinez, and the sparks fly. She becomes embroiled in a convoluted case with many tentacles dangling. Given her investigative nature she begins to make connections, even before the FBI agents do. As she shares some of her observations with Joe the mystery deepens. The auxiliary characters added a great deal to the story, Maddison, a social influencer, Terence, a prisoner, and Zoe, another social influencer and her photographer/boyfriend Eric, and most especially smelly Thomas.
BuzzCon seemed so insipid and silly to me, although I am sure the depiction was very accurate. It seemed to me that Rachel’s incredible investigative skills are sorely needed by the FBI.
As the plot with all its twists and turns thickens the reader is constantly changing their predictions and gathering more information, tidbit by tidbit. It was very difficult to put this book down as I wanted to solve what happened. So enjoyed the rocky ride on the way to the satisfactory ending.
Dark corners can indeed be danger points. I am looking forward to another story that has Rachel and Joe working together once again.
Many many thanks to Megan Goldin, St. Martins Press, and NetGalley for affording me the opportunity to read an arc of this engaging read to be published on August 8th.

I loved the second installment in the Rachel Krall series. I flew right through it getting hooked from the get go. Some of the way Agent Martinez (who I really enjoyed as a character) and Rachel address each other by their names when speaking was redundant and slightly annoying. However, it was easy to overlook because the plot and the pacing were so on point. This is the first book with an influencers trope that I've loved. Goldin did it really well.
