I didn’t love this one quite as much as I loved the first one, but I can definitely see why it’s a BOTM pick! Love these podcast stories!!! This is a submersible world that I can’t get enough if. And that ending!!!! So well done. Not a huge fan of the cover, but it makes more sense since reading it.

Terence Bailey, a soon-to-be-released convict suspected of multiple murders, receives a surprise visit from influential social media star Maddison Logan. After Maddison vanishes, the FBI turns to journalist Rachel Krall for help, leading her to delve into a perilous world of online rivalry and the dark secrets of an obsessed killer lurking on the internet.
Dark Corners is the second book in the Rachel Krall series and this can be read as a stand-alone. I loved The Night Swim so I was excited that we get to follow Rachel on a new investigation. Surprisingly, Dark Corners took a slower pace than I had anticipated. Nevertheless, I found the different perspectives captivating. Rachel, her podcast, and Thomas all had their distinct voices and the audiobook’s use of multiple narrators was well executed. The were a couple of parts that threw me off. First, the pacing felt off and the timeline of the crimes committed seemed excessively prolonged. I think the book could have been shortened as certain sections felt more like fillers rather than integral parts of the storyline. I found myself more drawn to the murder, suspects, and victims’ characters than in Rachel and the FBI agent she worked with. Rachel and Joe felt somewhat stilted and lacked depth which deterred my interest in them. On a positive note, the ending was unexpected and there were few of the twists I didn’t see coming. Overall, this was 3.5 stars, but I rounded to 4 stars on GoodReads.

Dark Corners is the second book in the Rachel Krall series. Rachel is a famous true crime podcaster. She is summoned by the FBI when she was brought to their attention by an inmate. I really enjoyed this book. It has a little bit of everything! I was very confused at one point but all my questions were answered by the end. Definitely add this one to your TBR.

🫣 “The scariest monster is the one that hides in plain sight” 🫣
True crime podcaster Rachel Krall is BACK again in “Dark Corners” by Megan Goldin, which is the book that follows “The Night Swim” in this series!

WOW what a follow up book! I was completely obsessed with The Night Swim and knew that I HAD to read this one immediately 🚨!!! I loved it picked up right after the first book and I cannot wait to see more books in the Rachel Krall series! BRAVO 👏
Thank you kindly to @megangoldinauthor @stmartinspress @netgalley for my advanced digital and physical copies in exchange for my honest review. This TWISTY thriller releases August 8, 2023! RUN, DON’T WALK to get it!

Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of Dark Corners by Megan Goldin.
Just as exciting and immersive as her first, The Night Swim. And to my recollection, they did a great job maintaining the same cast as music as the first as well, making the audio edition a firm first choice as far as ways to consume.
What is not to love about this series, it's got everything we love in today's world. True crime podcasts, unlikely victims, vapid influencers, a steamy, slightly forbidden romance, twists and turns. It's modern day gold, all done with multiple narrators and music. So fun, fast paced, and dangerous!

This book captured me from page one and did not let go until the very end. Very popular True Crime podcaster, Rachel Krall, is mysteriously called to Daytona Beach by the FBI to help them with a case involving missing and/or murdered women. A prison inmate, Terrance Baily, is suspected of being involved with this and is due to be released in a couple of days. Rachel is sent to talk to him but does not come away with any useful information other than noticing a distinct tattoo on his wrist of a snake coiled upon itself eating its tail. FBI agents Torreno and Martinez want Rachel to go back home but she decides to stay and see what she can find out about this very complex case.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC of this fantastic book that I could not put down. I am hoping Author Megan Goldin will have another book in this series with my favorite sleuth, Rachel Krall.

Such a good thriller with twists and turns that were not completely predictable.
Rachel Krall is called down to Florida to meet with an inmate at the FBIs request. The meeting itself is cryptic and instead of heading home as requested, Rachel decides to dig deeper into what is going on.
Told with varying voices, Dark Corners highlights that sometimes the ones we most suspect are innocent and the ones that appear harmless could be the ones we should look out for.
I really enjoy Megan Goldin's books and this is no different. The pace is fantastic and the writing keeps the reader engaged and turning pages until the end. Though, the love story felt a bit overdone and not necessary to continue the story line. As well, there were also pieces of description that felt superfluous.

Rachel Krall is back, with her true crime podcast, and right in the thick of an investigation with the FBI. I absolutely loved The Night Swim, so when I got pre-approved for this ARC, I was so excited. This story isn't told in quite the same way, as we have more perspectives in the story and are dealing with the world of social media influencers. However, I loved this story. I was invested from the beginning and had to know what was going to happen. I flew through this, and while I saw some of the twists coming, I didn't see them all. I can only hope we see more Rachel Krall in the future!
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the e-ARC of this book. It releases on August 8, 2023.

The Night Swim was my first Megan Goldin book and I LOVED it. I then tried a few of her other books but wasn’t that into them.
So I took a chance since this is the same main character as TNS. Unfortunately, this felt like a totally different book and different Rachel Krall 😢
Note that I read ~40% of it months ago, put it down because I got bored, then finally picked it up again now (since it publishes soon) ⏳
Rachel was abrasive and annoying, made dumb decisions, and didn’t feel like the same woman who worked her ass off to chase leads and break open cases 🎙️ P.S. We get it, she has a sultry voice!
Didn’t enjoy the influencer storyline, and didn’t feel like it added much since Goldin made all of them straight-up caricatures. Any book can take a jab at influencers—I’d love to see it used in a unique way sometime 🤳
The villain’s motivation was really lacking/never felt totally fleshed out. I’m still scratching my head regarding the why.
Lastly, the dialogue was stilted and clunky a lot of the time. At least I cracked one case during this book: Goldin’s books clearly aren’t for me 😭

This was such a disappointing book. I absolutely LOVED The Night Swim so I was excited to see that there was a second book in the series. However, this book didn't live up to my expectations. The mystery was sloppy. The influencer story line was one dimensional and stereotypical. The motivation for the killer felt so random and I just still had so many questions about it. Overall, I would not recommend reading this book. Stick with The Night Swim!

Fast paced, addictive read. The second installment in the Rachel Krall series is even better than the first. A man that is about to be released from prison has the FBI working double time to keep him incarcerated. Even though Terrance Bailey was only jailed for breaking and entering, he is suspected of much worse. With the murders and disappearances of several young women staying unsolved, the police believe Bailey is to blame even though they have continued during his incarceration. Enter Rachel Krall, who goes undercover in the world of influencers, since they seem to be the ones being targeted. Excellent, impossible to put down thriller!

He's almost out and she's gone missing...
Terence Bailey's sentence for breaking and entering is almost up. The police suspect him of murdering six women, but can they prove it? As his release day approaches, Madison Logan, a beautiful, young influencer with a huge following on social media, visits him unexpectedly, hours before she goes missing. Upon investigating her disappearance, the police find that Madison has no family, no friends, and noone seems to see her outside of her social media posts. Is she really who she says she is? After hitting a wall in their investigation, the FBI reluctantly reaches out for Rachel Krall's help. As Rachel goes undercover at an influencer convention, the police discover the body of a woman with a very distinct tattoo. Could Bailey have an accomplice helping him on the outside? Can Rachel help the FBI piece this puzzle together before someone else, or herself, turns up dead next?
After reading The Night Swim, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the next Rachel Krall story. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I was a little bummed to see a change for the worse in Rachel's personality and wasn't a big fan on the influencer storyline. It started off a little slow, but grew on me as it progressed, even though there was a lot going on at once. I really was really bummed to find out that Bailey Carr wasn't brought back for this audiobook, however, the narrators, Andre Santana, January LaVoy, and Samantha Desz made it fun to listen to! They portrayed the emotions of their characters beautifully. I also loved that the podcast episodes, with intro music and all, continued along with the phone calls and recordings that had a different quality of sound to them, making it more realistic and really added to the listening experience. I really hope this isn't the end of Rachel Krall!
I received a free copy of this book via Libro.fm, NetGalley, and Edelweiss+. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Dark Corners is a slow burn thriller with a true-crime podcaster, missing influencer and an inmate/murder suspect about to be released.
Since this is about a serial killer, there's a a bit of a cast to keep up with. Mix in multi-POV characters and varying timelines of murders/missing girls, plus a whole Influencer community and conference drama, I can see how some readers might get lost or overwhelmed. But if you can keep up, I did enjoy the way the storylines come together in the end--guessable, but still rewarding.
You definitely don't need to read Night Swim first to enjoy this. I remember literally nothing from most characters book-to-book and didn't miss anything. Although, I don't remember if Rachel was as frustrating in the first book, but she doesn't always make the smartest decisions here.
Thank you to Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for the advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I have been so fortunate with the amazing books that I have read lately!
This is the second book in the Rachel Krall series. Krall is a true crime podcaster and she’s back to help the FBI search for an influencer who goes missing after visiting a suspected serial killer.
I loved the fact that the story takes place at a social media influencer conference. The twists and connections were very well done. The story alternates between the story and episodes of Krall’s podcast. I listened to it and felt the podcast was done PERFECTLY. When the music that introduced the podcast would start, I got so excited because the podcast felt so real!! I thoroughly enjoyed this and didn’t want it to end!

Megan Goldin is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. I've been lucky enough to read The Night Swim and Stay Awake, and both of those novels were completely captivating, so I was excited to get the chance to read Dark Corners as well.
This continuation of Rachel's story did not disappoint. I read a lot of thrillers, and this one is top-notch. Everything about the story, the characters, and the plot development had me completely enthralled, making this a totally unputdownable mystery!

This was a fun and intriguing read! I loved the multiple timelines and the different POVs, it really added to the suspense in trying to figure out who everyone was and how everything tied together. I enjoyed the plot line and how they tried to direct our attention to Bailey and trying to get the reader to think he was a murderer. I figured out a few of the twists about half way through the book but i didnt mind! I loved Rachel's character and how hard she tried to figure out who was behind the disappearance of Maddison. I also liked that they threw in other deaths to try and derail the plot and make the reader think they were all connected when they really werent. i thought the end was rushed and i wouldve liked to have seen and heard more about McCoy in the end and where more of his rage and anger came from, or if it was just from his medical condition. His mindset really creeped me out and i really despised hm, i didnt feel sorry for him at ALL. Overall, it was a good book filled with twists and turns and great plot that came together in the end! 4/5

I love Megan Goldin’s books. I was so excited when I saw that NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press sent me this digital copy and immediately downloaded it. Dark Corners was everything I needed/wanted and more! Megan Golding knows how to keep readers wanting more as the story goes on. This physiological thriller was unputdownable, twist and a lot of fun. I loved not only seeing Rachel Krall back, but also meeting new characters. Thank you Megan Goldin, NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this great arc!

Dark Corners is the fourth book (second in the Rachel Krall series) that I’ve read by Megan Goldin and, once again, I couldn’t put the book down. Goldin really does put the thrill in the thriller genre.
There are three storylines that are contained in the book; what is happening in the present with Rachel and the investigation, the serial killer doing serial killer things, and the podcast helping the reader with the flow of past events. These three aspects of the book help to keep it moving along at a fast pace and gives the reader just enough tantalizing information to get them intrigued before moving onto another point of view.
There were some coincidences in the book that helped to throw suspicion in other directions which I really enjoyed. This had me thinking various things for awhile, and then, Bam!, total change of direction… which was fantastic. Some books use coincidences to try and help the book fill in consistency holes, but Goldin used them in a masterful way to enhance the story.
If you enjoy thrillers, you will not be disappointed with Dark Corners or anything else Goldin writes.

I was a little leery of this once since I liked the first in the series (Night Swim) but didn’t think it was anything amazing. I liked the format, but the story didn’t really keep my attention. However, I read Dark Corners in two days because I just didn’t want to put it down!
First of all: serial killer. Anytime a book is about one, I’m going to toss anything else to the side to read it. Second: podcast. I really enjoy the format of regular chapters and then the special report podcasts thrown in.
I figured out what was going on pretty early in the story and couldn’t figure out why the people in the story were not following the clues. But… it’s a good story, and obviously it would have been a lot shorter if they had. 😂
It was difficult to read some parts because words/dialect, etc. didn’t match the setting. I later realized the author is from Australia, but the setting of the book is Florida - so it’s a little “off” at times. It didn’t take away from the overall story, it just made me pause sometimes.
Questions I still had after I was done reading (no spoilers):
1. Whatever happened to the ad the FBI was going to put out?
2. What happened to the kitten?!? 😱 (don’t worry - no animal cruelty here)

Megan Goldin is becoming one of my favorite authors! I requested an advanced copy of Dark Corners knowing nothing more about it than the fact it was written by Goldin. Since I went into reading it blind - I was so surprised to find that podcaster Rachel Krall from The Night Swim is back. I was reading and kept thinking - something seems so familiar to me about this girl. I loved The Night Swim - it has been a while since I read it so I really didn't remember much other than Rachel and a courtroom setting. This time Rachel is assisting an FBI agent in a case. So you could absolutely read Dark Corners if you haven't read The Night Swim. But I encourage you to read BOTH - because they are both so good! This book caught my attention right away and kept me engaged throughout - it got really good toward the end. I do seem to enjoy books that have a podcast element to them. This one also gave a glimpse into the world of influencers as well. Thank you so much St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for my advanced copy of Dark Corners.
