"The scariest monster is the one that hides in plain sight."

Podcaster Rachel Krall has been called to Florida by the FBI to interview a convicted killer in a high-security prison, hoping to get information on missing influencer Maddison Logan. If you read Night Swim, you've met Rachel Krall, but the format of this book is different. This one lacks the dual timeline and the podcast episodes. It's kind of nice that it has the same main character (start of a series, perhaps?), but isn't formulaic.
While Rachel investigates Maddison's disappearance, she stumbles into the bizarre dystopian world of social media influencers. It's like "high school on steroids." This is an exciting thriller with plenty of twists and turns, and a bit of romance (completely clean, love scenes are behind closed doors).

I recently read “The Night Swim” and was so excited to be accepted to read “Dark Corners”. I was instantly hooked on the sequel. I felt the chapters and story line moved at a quick pace to keep me wanting more. I made the mistake of telling myself I would read a few chapters before bed and ended up staying up way later than I anticipated to finish the book. I’m hoping there are more Rachel Krall books in the future!

What a great follow up to The Night Swim. This is one to definitely add to your 2023 TBR list. Megan Goldin is back with Rachel Krall in Dark Corners (and no, you don’t have to read the first book for Dark Corners to make sense), and this one might have been my favorite Rachel Krall novel yet.

Dark Corners really did everything right as a mystery/thriller book to me. The characters are believable and likable. The book picks up right away, so I was instantly drawn into the story. The quick, short chapters make it feel so easy to fly through the book. I was invested in the story all the way through and happily was not disappointed with the ending which can really make or break a book for me.

This book is unique in that it delves a bit into the influencer lifestyle and touches more on Rachel’s podcasting. This book still has the mystery/thriller feel with the changing points of view, little twists throughout, and an ending I didn’t see coming. The influencer portions just made this book feel refreshingly unique.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press, Megan Goldin, and Netgalley for allowing me to read an advanced reader’s copy.

My thanks to Net Galley and St Martin's Press for this excellent read!

Rachel Krall is a famous pod caster who is brought down to Florida to assist Agent Joe Martinez to talk to a prisoner, Terence Bradley. Why you may ask? Well Maddie Logan, an influencer has gone missing and she has a connection to Rachel, that Rachel is unaware of. This leads Rachel to BuzzCon. A giant convention of influences. Story is also told from the perspective of the serial killer.

I really enjoyed this. It kept you guessing with lots of twist. I figured out one particular plot point with Rachel, but got a nice surprising twist at the end.

My only complaint, I wanted more with the arc of Rachel and Joe. All in all great read!

Thank you NetGallery!
I was so excited to read this book but it felt so different from the first book. Maybe it was because I listened to the first book and read the second book. I could not keep track of the characters, even though the author used full names most of the time, then she would switch between the full name and last name. I had such a hard time figuring out what was happening 70% of the time. Maybe when the book is released I will try the audiobook.

Thank you NetGalley and St.Martin’s Press for the advanced readers copy of Dark Corners by Megan Goldin. I really enjoyed this book and the characters. This was a well developed story. Rachel Krall is a podcaster who is asked to come to Daytona, Florida by the FBI to talk to a prisoner. Rachel has no idea why this inmate wants to talk to her and the FBI is not giving out any information. So Rachel’s starts her own investigation. This is book 2 of the Rachel Krall series. Looking forward to a book 3!

I was so happy to see Rachel Krall was coming back in Megan Goldin’s newest book. The facts are slowly uncovered throughout the book which makes the reader never want to put it down! I’m looking forward to the next in this series!

Curiosity drives this story.

Rachel Krall is living on the edge in Florida. She’s working with the FBI to investigate a serial killer connected to a group of social influencers. Her podcast, “Guilty or Not Guilty” has a huge following as everyone anxiously waits to hear all the details.

Special Agent Joe Martinez sets her up at the maximum-security prison to meet with inmate Terrence Bailey who may be orchestrating what’s happening to the missing girls. He told her, “The scariest monster is the one that hides in plain sight.” Is it possible to find a way to convict him before he gets released in a couple of days?

After the meeting, Martinez encourages Krall to go back home for her safety. But she stays and I just want her to get on the plane and leave. It’s pretty easy to predict that she’s going to end up in a tight spot.

The alternating chapters turn toward Thomas McCoy who gives everyone -- including me – the creeps. He’s an ordinary rideshare driver but everyone comments that he has foul body odor which makes him angry.

The facts are released a little at a time – enough to get me to read late into the night with the doors locked. It’s an exciting thriller that feels like it could be real in this day of social influencers tapping into a world that may or may not end well. The author had the smells down as the prison was like male inspiration and stale urine.

This book follows Krall’s unforgettable podcast in “The Night Swim.” Both are gripping in their own ways. I can’t wait to read what comes next.

My thanks to Megan Goldin, St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for allowing me to read this advanced copy with an expected release date of August 8, 2023.

I think this might be my new favourite Megan Goldin book! I really liked The Night Swim so I was happy to have another book featuring Rachel. I was caught up in this story and trying to solve all the intricacies of the mystery along the way and I was happy with how the book ultimately ended. Without revealing any spoilers, I liked the duo that was established by the end of the book and I am hoping that there will be a third book featuring that character as well! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in true crime stories.

My thanks to NetGalley and St Martins Press for an e-ARC of this book.

Rachel Krall, true crime podcaster, is back in Goldin’s The Night Swim. This time, the FBI has pulled her in to their investigation of a missing influencer., Maddison Logan. Before her disappearance, Maddison had visited a man in prison, whose release was impending. Soon Rachel finds herself wrapped up in the case, so much so that she goes undercover at the biggest influencer conference around.

I enjoyed The Night Swim and Stay Awake, so I was excited to read this one. I found it to be less compelling than those two bidens, and the dialogue was rather lackluster. However, if you want to see what’s next for Rachel Krall, or you’re looking for a mystery steeped in the world of influencers, this might be the book for you.

I didn’t want this to end, but I flew through it.

I absolutely LOVED The Night Swim, so when I heard that Megan Goldin was bringing Rachel back I was so excited. This was another great mystery/thriller solved in large part by our resident podcaster.

I personally love the influencer dynamic in books of this genre. I find it so entertaining when people inevitably become cutthroat. And while that is only a small part of this story, the bigger picture is entirely more sinister.

A well known influencer goes missing just after visiting a prison inmate accused of killing multiple women. With only three days to go before the inmate is released, FBI agent Joe Martinez calls Rachel in to help.

With so many unanswered questions, Rachel must infiltrate a big influencer event while keeping her identity a secret in order to uncover what could have led this beautiful young influencer down this path to her disappearance.

I absolutely loved this book. I felt the big reveal was a teensey-bit rushed, and therefore lackluster, but I found so much more in this book to love. The bit of relationship development was great and actually just what I wanted to see in this second book.

I truly hope Goldin has more Rachel Krall in store for us!

Thanks so much for the ARC. I enjoyed this sequel almost as much as the first book. Look forward to reading more books by Goldin.

I went into this book not knowing that it was a sequel to Night Swim (which I didn't read). I honestly don't feel like I missed anything by going straight to the 2nd book in the series. It did well as a standalone novel. I don't usually read police type thrillers, but this book kept my interest from the first page. A quick overview: Rachel is a podcaster who is asked by the FBI (Joe Martinez) to come help talk to a prisoner (Terrance Bailey) who is about to be released from prison (he was in for breaking and entering). He has mentioned Rachel's name and the FBI want to see what the connection is between Rachel and Terrance. The police and FBI think that Terrance shouldn't be released from prison because they they believe beside the breaking and entering, that he's also murdered many young women. I found this book to be twisty and a fun ride. A solid 4 stars from me!

I struggled a bit with this one. It may be due to not having read the prior book. I was expecting a thriller, but that's not what I found. There were unanswered questions, and the "twists" weren't all that unexpected.

Love Rachel Krall! I was glad Megan Goldin did a second Rachel Krall book. Her character is a strong woman reporter who does very popular true crime podcast. She isn't just the voice behind it, she is the brains and investigative journalist behind it. She isn't interested in all the hoopla and fame. The FBI calls her in to help speak with a incarcerated man who is suspected of being a serial killer as he may have info about a missing woman. They suspect he may have a partner. He seems to be a fan of Krall's podcast so they asked for her help although this dragged her into the line of fire as well (of course) BUT part of the storyline is set at an influencers convention which her attitude towards this is entertaining as well. Long story short it intertwines old cases with the new and she is in the middle of it. Missing Girl, Murder, Serial Killers, Possible Romance and more. It was an intriguing and fast read. Definitely recommend. It can be read as a stand alone but I am glad I read The Night Swim first as it helps develop her character more.

Dark corners was a delight!!! Loved this authors first book and writing style. The twists and turns in this book were really good!
I didn’t know if this book would be too similar to the night swim but it wasn’t and I truly enjoyed.

This is a follow-up to The Night Swim by Goldin that features Rachel Krall, a true-crime podcaster. For me, this book didn't have the "wow factor" that the first one did--too much of this story focused on podcasters and social media influencers. I do hope the author keeps the series going, however.

Thanks to NetGalley & St. Martin's Press for the ARC.

3.5 ⭐️

Dark Corners is the second novel following Rachel Krall, a journalist who runs a very successful true crime investigative podcast. In this story, Krall is called to a prison to meet Terrence Bailey, a prisoner who is getting out. She is somehow connected to this prisoner and the disappearance of a big social media influencer/content creator. Krall becomes involved in the investigation and goes somewhat undercover at Buzzcon, a huge event and competition for content creators. While at the event, Krall works closely with the FBI to try and solve the case.

This is probably my least favourite story from the author and The Night Swim is my favourite so I’m a bit disappointed. It did keep me reading and interested, I did enjoy it but it was really just okay. There was nothing special or thrilling about it, I found it very predictable. While the story in general is well written, I found the dialogue very awkward and unnatural sounding. It really got under my skin how up until the end of the story the author continued to use full names for each character. By the end of the story, I know that Rachel is Rachel and Joe is Joe I don’t need their full name each time they’re mentioned. I really liked that aspect of the story though, Rachel and Joe and how they worked together. I liked all the characters and they were well written. This story just kind of lacked all around, enough nuggets were given through the story that there wasn’t really a huge reveal or anything in the end. I also didn’t love the different point of views in the story, I liked Rachel and Joe, but not Thomas or the random chapters that I’m assuming were the podcast? Those should be labelled as such. Regardless, I would be excited to read a third book on Rachel and would love to find out where she goes next. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the free in exchange for an honest review.
