The title itself is worth five stars. The contents, like the fact that Mary River turtles can breathe out of their butts, are equally as worthy. Butt breathing is as hilarious to learn about as it is to simply say.

Beyond the Backside or Face the Facts -- no matter which is it, you're going to have a fun time finding out which side you're seeing and (here is where we get the good trivia) why it looks hilariously "like that".

What child doesn't want the opportunity to scream "BUTT" without fear of admonishment? This book offers learning in a way that any child, even this 59 year old kid, will embrace without question.

In this nonfiction book, fourteen animals from around the world are used to create a game to identify whether the picture shows an animal's butt or face. Photographs and basic notes provide the reader with details on how these animals ingest food. Back matter includes a world map pinpointing where the animals in the book are located, and a three column chart specifying the scientific name of the animal, where it sleeps and what they eat. I can see a lot of competition from kids who crave anything that might be remotely gross, so libraries will definitely need more than one copy.
Thank you to Sourcebooks eXplore, an imprint of Sourcebooks Kids, and Netgalley for the digital arc.

Butt or Face? is a fun, fresh, and fascinating nonfiction animal book. Elementary readers will love looking at the cropped, closeup photos of animals and guessing whether they're seeing the animal's butt or face. Each reveal features a larger view of the animal in the closeup photograph and provides the animal's name and species as well as information about the animal. A map and a chart with habitat and diet information for each animal is included in the back of the book. I can see teachers using this in a lesson about animal adaptations and to inspire some additional research. I'm looking forward to adding this book to my school's collection.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a digital review copy.

Cute children’s book that will help educate children while making them giggle trying to figure out if they are looking at an animals face or butt! This book would be best for young elementary school children.

The title alone was enough to make the 10-year-old boy that lives inside me SQUEAL with delight.

This is one of those marvelous makes-learnin'-fun books that takes wild animal facts, and turns them into a hilarious guessing game. You see a fragment of a photo. Is it a butt, or is it a face? Turn the page, and you'll LEARN about a fascinating creature you may not know existed. (Red-lipped batfish, anyone?) And, who knew spiders had such interesting butts? (Who honestly wants to think about spiders' butts? Anyone?)

Butt, seriously, this one was a blast. Most kids (me included) can't suppress their giggles at the word BUTT, and this book is going to FLY off the shelves when I buy a copy for the library.

Thank you to the author, Sourcebooks Explore and NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This children's book goes right for one of the perennial topics that fascinate children: butts, behinds, tushes and bums. Yes, faces are included as well, but obviously that's not the main draw. The kids I read this with loved guessing, and finding out more about the animal behind the guessing photo. Two caveats: This is not a bedtime book, unless you want to get your kids wound up and laughing themselves silly as a first stage of going to sleep. And although 4 and up is the age given as target audience, littles will need lots of help with the words used (not to mention, some of the photos are a bit gruesome) - but of course they can grow into this as well.

We loved this book. Such a fun and educational book for kids and adults. We used it as part of a homeschool learning lesson and my son had the best time and learned a lot. Lots of laughs and learning.

My whole family just read this book and guessed butt or face together while waiting for our food at dinner. We were laughing so hard and enjoying this book immensely. This will be one we add to our shelves for sure.
Thank you for this arc

Man, I wish I had the physical version of this book. I had to imagine it to get the full effect. Knowing kids like I do, I really think they will be drawn in by the initial question. But they will stay for the facts about animals. I think we could have a lot of fun with this book.

This is such a fun book that I think kids will thoroughly enjoy reading over and over. The giggles that will come from just looking at the pictures and trying to guess the animals. This book is a great way for kids to learn about new animals while also being a really enjoyable book for grown-ups.

A friend recommended this book to me, and I knew my science-loving, non-fiction-reading, fact-craving 6th-grader would love it. (SPOILER: I was right.) The premise of Butt or Face? might be silly, but(t) the layout of the book is fantastic, the pictures are gorgeous, and I think this is a great way to spark interest in learning more about these animals!

This book is hilarious!! My kids thought it was amazing - BUTT or FACE! They were in hysterics the entire time we were reading it! I love the little facts and also the new and exciting animals that aren't apart of the standard ' farm yard ' variety!

This book was so much fun it had the staff laughing. Trying to figure out if it was a butt or a face was a lot harder than it looked. Some look easy but were hard, and some looked hard but we’re easy. Overall, this is a fantastic book and introduces children to animals not normally talked about in animal books. Plus, the information in the back about where this book came from and how it was an idea based on Botswana, farmers painting eyes on the back of their cattle to keep away predators. Perfect. This book will get checked out so often libraries are going to need more than one copy.

A great book for elementary readers, this nonfiction title gives students a glimpse of a picture and asks them to decide if they're looking at the organism's face or... With full color pictures and informative facts, this title is a fun way to talk about adaptations, camouflage, and more. The end of the book contains a chart showing where each animal can be found and what it eats.

Read this with my kids and their cousin tonight and we had such fun. They laughed so much but learned a lot, too. Great for animal lovers like mine.

Despite the funny title and concept, you can learn a lot from this book! The animals are fascinating, and I learned about a few that I never heard of. While I wouldn’t add this book to my classroom library, my 5th graders would enjoy it and it would be worth the purchase.

In a Nutshell: A fun + informative nonfiction picture book for little animal lovers. Enjoyed it!

Using the guessing game format, this book presents some odd close-up photos of animals and asks a simple question: Is that a *butt* or a *face*? Kids love potty humour, and using it as an educational device is a great way of *butt*ressing their knowledge while providing plenty of LOL moments.

The concept sounded entertaining and easy to *crack*. However, I almost ended up with egg on my *face* after my poor guesses.

Let’s *face* the simple fact. It is *butt* obvious that we are looking at some really weird *visages* or some really adorable *tushies*. However, getting to the *bottom* of the matter isn’t as straightforward. I had *ass*umed that my animal knowledge was quite strong, and yet I fell flat on my *bottom* by making some embarrassing goofs while guessing.

The photographs are stunning. A couple of the pics even made me laugh my *ass* off with their appearance. But a few were quite tricky and made me feel the pressure of saving my *face* and not becoming the *butt* of anyone’s jokes.

In *hind*sight, I didn’t expect to find new animals in this book. The content appears *face*tious, but the author’s choice of animals ensured that the book delivered on education too. Learning about unusual creatures from nature is always fun, even if they made me bust my *butt* guessing their names.

Furthermore, there was an interesting table at the *backside* of the book, providing information about the 14 creatures in the photos, specifically about what they eat and where they dwell. (You’ll love the column headings of the table!)

Don’t miss out on the author’s note at the *end*!

Recommended from the *bottom* of my heart to classrooms where little animal lovers can kick *butt* with their guesses! This book will work perfectly for ages 6-10. (Younger ones can have a fun time guessing the animals, but the vocabulary level in the explanations might be a bit difficult for them.)

4.5 stars.

My thanks to Sourcebooks Kids and NetGalley for the DRC of “Butt or Face?”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

Note: If any word in my review offends you, please do not *butt* heads with me. The book is written in a much more mature manner than this review. 😁

It was really fun to read through even being familiar with most of the species. I really liked those photo clippings where it was clearly intended to show some parts of animal faces as butts. I think children will love those photos that at first sight may look quite embarrassing :)

The book also contains some interesting facts about these animals as well as their food and habitat, and a lot of puns. And the last photo and its story, it's hilarious!

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing the ARC.
