This was another great book that left me surprised with the ending. Great way to surprise the reader and tie up all the questions in the last chapter. Highly recommend.

Genre: PsychologicalThriller

The main prognostic is a widowed psychologist who runs an illegal clinic in her home’s basement. When the book’s blub reads, “Two women—one crazy, one ill—and both have secrets they would kill for and Two men—one innocent, one ruthless,” you pretty much know that the novel will be a domestic thriller, which is why I wanted to read the book. As promised, early on in the story, it is apparent that some or all of the characters are mentally unbalanced. The blurb doesn’t mention that they are also unlikeable. Unlikable characters can contribute to an engaging plot. That did not happen here. When I read “The Widow of Weeping Pines,” I wasn’t aware that it is part of the “Mad Women Series.” I wouldn't have read the book if I had known. In my experience, thriller series novels are sometimes clumsily written, and they can be cheezy, which pretty much sums up my opinion on this novel that began with promise but didn’t follow through.

3.5 🌟 Messed-up people doing messed-up things in 170 pages. Alice Finney and others write 400-page books with similar plots. It brought nothing new to the genre but if you like crazy plot twisted domestic thrillers and you're in need to catch up with your reading goal, this will do. Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion 😁

A short book that keeps you interested from the start. Betts discovered her husband cheating on her when she went to surprise him and things took a dangerous turn. Now she is widowed and the one person that thought of her husband as a father figure happens to be detective Stahl and he questions all of it. Betts gets engaged to the town dentist, things are good for a few years until Betts starts getting paranoid that he too is cheating on her. He leaves one night without a word and she’s about to lose her mind. She’s certain he’s cheating and she suspects who it is. So of course the logical thing to do is go over and shoot her ….. then turn the gun on yourself. She then discovers he wasn’t cheating on her and her husband wasn’t dead and the detective and him we’re working together and her fiancé drained his account and left town, and her husband has poisoned her in return.
She ends up in prison finishing her novel.

This book was decent , but i would say it lacks some depth. It was so short that it was almost hard for it to achieve depth. Could have easily filled in some areas with a hundred more pages.

As the name of the series suggests, the main lead Betts of this book "Widow of Weeping Pines" is a crazy as a person can get. She is a widow, currently engaged to a failed dentist Ian, and is suspicious of him. There is also Nicholas, the Detective mentored by Jack, Betts' dead husband, who suspects Betts had a hand in the death of Jack. He is trying any and all means necessary to find out the truth and poor Ian can't handle the reality of living with a person having issues.

This is the premise of the story but then the story further travels to weird places and situations, some of which are quite frankly very unbelievable, nevertheless entertaining. If you are prepared to suspend disbelief for about a few hours, which I did, the book is sure to hold your attention completely and take you into a completely crazy world. The story was completely entertaining, particularly Betts takes the cake, and I had an interesting time reading the book. Can't recommend it more to people who want to read something quick, crazy and gripping.

5 stars! I did not want this book to end. Betts was so interesting it was hard not to like her despite being so wicked. I so wish it was longer. The characters were smooth and you really got an idea of what they were like. So many twists!

There was a lot of potential but I felt like a lot of questions were left unanswered and the ending was very abrupt. I enjoyed the first half but once the twist was revealed, the plot took an unexpected turn which didn’t suit what was built in the first half. I was hoping the background on the characters would lead to some conclusions because I found them each really interesting.

This was a short read but don't let it's diminutive size dissuade you! Well developed, engrossing plot and great twists. Worth the read!

If you love a fast paced psychological mystery this book is for you! A quick read that packs a punch. I love a book with no extra fluff, just the story and facts you need about characters. This book delivered.

You will meet Betts, a psychologist who lost her husband several years ago and has moved on with her fiancée Ian. They're living in a small town and rumors are starting to fly.

Thank you netgalley for the advanced readers copy.

Thank you to Netgalley and the author for allowing me to read this book.

I have mixed feelings about this one... I loved the way it was written. The pacing and character voice was fantastic and added to the antisocial, self absorbed personality of the main character.
However, I hated the twist with the ex husband. It felt cheap and I was really expecting more. I would have rated it closer to 5 stars had there been a better ending.

Overall, I did quite enjoy the book and I look forward to reading more books by this author. 3.5 stars!

P.s. there is a missing bracket at the end of the release date of The Lie Between Her when it's listed at the beginning and again at the end of the book.

Get ready to absolutely despise this main character! I was not relating to Betts at all from the start. She was trashing her home state of Arkansas (I live here!), wishing her husband would die (I like mine), complaining about her name (Betty Lou - my mother's name) as well as her thin strawberry blonde hair (which I also have). This is where mine and Betts few similarities end. She is actually a horribly unreliable, bat-sh!t crazy gal!

Betts is a therapist running a (off the books) clinic in her basement at Gadleigh Estates in Washington. We soon find out that many characters in Betts' life have some ulterior motives. No one can be trusted! This book was like the train wreck that you can't look away from. It is a short novel you can finish in one sitting and will not be able to turn the pages fast enough to get to the bottom of things. I was very surprised by one of the twists! Typically, I am not a fan of dislikable main characters, but this novella had me hooked!

I really enjoyed this fast-paced, shorter read! I found myself continuing to flip through the pages despite the late hour. I really enjoyed that the book in its entirety kept me guessing - I really didn’t predict the twist and I read a lot of psychological thrillers that I’m able to guess. I also enjoyed that I didn’t quite like any of the characters in the book; it made my reading more interesting! Thanks for this great book!

This is a very gripping and thrilling short story. However, even being a short story it does not lack in detail! It is riveting from page one to the very end! I loved the twist at the end!

A cleverly written story about secrets kept in a small town. One person dies, one person is suspicious about this death, one person is a grifter of sorts, one thinks their partner is having an affair, two people ARE having an affair. And in the middle of all this is a woman whose husband died, whose fiancé might be having an affair, who has the town sheriff thinking she killed her husband. But you won’t guess what’s really going on.

This was certainly a different book but was easy to read and kept my interest. I enjoyed reading something different. I recommend this book.

I really enjoyed Weeping Pines. It kept me guessing until the end. The characters were unlikable but I really enjoyed that aspect of the novel. I never met a character quite like Betts. A fast and breezy read that held my attention.

Betts is a woman on a mission but what that mission is even she doesn’t know. Mental health therapist Betts married her uber rich husband while on the east coast USA. He retired moving her across country to the family ‘castle’ in the little town of Weeping Pines and promptly died leaving Betts the rich unpopular widow in a small town. Betts has plenty of mental health issues of her own but she decides there’s not much a pre breakfast pint of vodka a day won’t solve. She finds herself running an underground, read: illegal, therapy clinic out of her basement. And the police start sniffing around. Is it the clinic or is it something else? Why did Betts’ fit older husband die so soon? Or is there more? With Betts every action seems to provoke a four times the force reaction, a recipe for sure disaster.

I wanted to like this book and there were parts of it which were great. However, the ending was set up to be a shocking reveal but it relied on so many coincidences falling into place that it felt entirely implausible. The main character felt like two different people from chapter to chapter (not including the way the cop character perceived her). I’d like to read more from this author because they have some great plot ideas, but this particular book fell flat for me.

Betty Lou is a local psychologist who holds sessions illegally out of her home clinic. Not only does she counsel Carmen Marquis, but she also suspects Carmen of having an affair with her fiancé, Ian. Betty Lou is also a recent widow who’s deceased husband was also suspected of having affairs before his untimely death. Detective Nicholas Stahl is determined to get to the bottom of Betty Lou’s deceitful ways. You won’t see the ending coming.

Betts is a teacher/writer/psychologist....with a dead husband, dentist fiance, and somewhat of a drinking problem. Oh and a detective breathing down her back!
I enjoyed this quick little thriller, and I mean quick, under 200 pages. It's action packed and I liked the author's straight to the point writing style. In a short span of pages, I was attached to some of the characters and enjoyed all the twists and turns. 3.75 if I could...
Thank you, Netgalley, publisher, and author for the ARC!
