First of all, I would like to begin by saying that the NetGalley app is not a good reading option. I usually read on my kindle and/or my mobile phone and the words were so minuscule that I could barely read the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed what I was able to read (due to the tiny words) but was frankly put off by all the profanity. As a result, I decided not to finish the book although the plot sounded great and the writing was also excellent.

Someday I'll Find You is about a young couple in love, who are torn apart by the war and their need to serve their countries for the greater good. The story is told in a few POV, but is done in a way that is not confusing. Billy and Ilse's characters are well-developed and readers will be drawn into their bond and hopeful reunion at the end of the war.

The first half of the book was slow, which was surprising to me considering Ilse is a female spy and musician, and Billy is a Canadian fighter pilot. The second half of the book was a lot more engaging and fast-moving.

I loved how the book was loosely based on the author's own parents. I also loved that the book touched on the war or battles in Spain, North Africa, Guernica, Sicily, Norway and the Blitz. All these attributes made Someday I'll Find You stand out from other WWII fiction.

I would sincerely like to thank NetGalley and Doubleday Canada for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you net galley for giving me this opportunity to read this book. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It is set at the end of the Spanish Civil War and the begining of WWII.
We hear of Billy Coke who is a fighter pilot in the Spanish Civil War. He sees things that he doesn't want to see and it haunts him through WWII.
We meet Ilse who is Norwegian and a spy. But for who? The Norwegian resistance or the SOE.
Fate brings Billy and Ilse together and tears them apart.
The Nazis have invaded Ilse's beloved Norway and she wants to help her fellow citizens. Ilse's father just happens to be a Nazi sympathizer.
Ilse is instructed to get information about the Nazis and let her superiors know what is going on.
Ilse takes a Nazi lover to get information.
This book started out a bit slow, but it managed to get fast paced and kept my interest.

Told from multiple points of view, though largely from the perspectives of Ilse and Billy, C. C. Humphreys’ “Someday I’ll Find You” is a novel rich in history and characterization. The beginning is heavy with character development which only adds to the richness of the story’s progression and the immediacy of the action as the story advances. Humphreys creates a steady buildup of tension throughout the novel creating characters that are dynamic, relatable, and morally complex. Throughout, he focuses on the individual journeys which Ilse and Billy take during the course of the war; from their first chance encounter during the London Blitz of 1940, to their three day escape from war-torn London where they fall in love, to Guernica (in Billy’s recollections from 1937) where he survives the bombing, to intense dogfights over Sicily, to Ilse’s hometown of Oslo Norway where she works as a spy for the SOE. Throughout we are also given a glimpse into the life and perspective of Klaus Von Ronnenberg, a pilot turned intelligence agent in the Abwehr whose connection to music brings him close to Ilse, a talented flautist.

I confess to not knowing much about the impact of WWII in Norway so found this perspective of the war compelling and informative, particularly the exploration of Operation Valkyrie, so much so that I will continue to delve into more of Norway’s rich history.

I quite enjoyed Canadian author C. C. Humphreys’ novel, “Someday I’ll Find You” and look forward to reading more of his work. Thank you so much to @netgalley and @penguinrandomca for the eARC (ebook Advance Reading Copy)!

Disclaimer, I did not review this book because me and the author share the same last name minus one letter, I picked it up because of the premise and cover, and was not disappointed. At the core of this book you follow Billy and Ilse as they fall in love and are torn apart by WW2 and then they do their darndest to get back to each other. It is a book about survival, spying, war, and most of all the power of desire for people to be with the one's we love no matter what.

The only thing people are not going to like is that it takes a while to get where it is going, so it may be too long to some people, but I know the writer is building his world and from what I gather the story is close to home, which makes this book a treat to read. What I didn't like was I wanted more Ilse points of view, because I like spy stuff.

The good far outweigh the bad and I can honestly say, after chapter eleven I could not put the book down. The history was not pushed to the backside of this meddling three way. In fact, the romance adds to the spying, lying, and heartbreak, which means the writer is really good at getting into the characters heads. This would be a great movie, so the author better have a script ready to sell.

Beginning writers who want to go into the historical romance writing business should take notes from this book. You do not have to go crazy with historical facts and you do not have to bog it down with romance, but you do have to nail it hard and have an impactful ending like this book. That ending should be taught in writing schools and English classes across Canada or dare I say worldwide, but enough about given my Not Uncle C. C. Humphreys a huge ego boost. Just get out there and pick up the book June 6th 2023 and you will not be let down.

Happy Reading, but stay out of trouble!
Chris Humphrey

3.5/5 stars.

After seeing this book marketed to those who loved The Nightingale, I couldn’t stop myself from requesting this as an early read. SOMEDAY I’LL FIND YOU is the story of Isle, a Norwegian spy, and Billy, a Canadian pilot, who fall in love during WWII and must find a way back to one another when the war is over.

I’ve not yet read anything else written by C.C Humphreys and as I love historical fiction novels, I was very excited to give this one a try. The premise is very intriguing and unique with high risk stakes of whether Isle and Billy will find each other.

I liked that there are multiple POV’s but that the majority of the storytelling was done by Billy and Isle. Each character encountered during this novel are well-written and developed. I will say that I would have liked to get more of Isle’s perspective than what was given. I could be wrong, but I think female spies weren’t abundant during WWII and I would have liked to see a bit more of her day to day as a spy infiltrating the Nazi party.

The pacing of this story is slow. There’s a lot of detailed descriptions, shifting from one perspective to another (some that I personally found no added value to initially). I think this part could have been a bit shorter. I was having trouble staying focused and was seriously considering DNF-ing at 47%. Evidently, I persevered and was rewarded with an ending that I adored, but that was ultimately vague. I spent so long waiting for things to happen, that when they did I was not underwhelmed but I definitely wanted more. I think a post-script epilogue several years after the fact would have given full closure to the novel a bit better.

I loved the author’s note at the end explaining how this novel came to be. It was a nice added touch.

<i>I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher, Doubleday Canada, of this advanced digital copy for the opportunity to read this novel in exchange for an honest review! All opinions expressed are my own.</i>

It’s essentially a story of survival with a love story, mixed with betrayal and duplicity, mixed with music set in World War 2. The story is loosely based on the author’s family history.

The description says it’s for readers of the Nightingale, but I don’t think it is as compelling. Of course, the Nightingale is one of my all time favourite books, so it would be a hard act to follow. I do think if you like historical fiction, you will like this, but just be warned the pacing is a bit slow.

The cover of this book is beautiful. I love the added touch of the foil treble clefs. 3.5 Stars.

Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Historical fiction is a favourite genre of mine and Someday I'll Find You delivers on the history. It also has a dash of romance. Following Billy and Ilse throughout world war 2 this novel gives us a glimpse at the war through the eyes of a pilot and a spy. Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Random House for my review copy.

One December night, as the bombs drop on Britain, Ilse and Billy meet right before the war pulls them to different fronts and different dangers. As the war rages and they are both forced to do unimaginable things to defend their countries and themselves they will not forget each other.
Two perfectly matched hero’s that make you want to keep reading because you need to know what their fates will be. A gripping novel of WW2, partially set in Norway one of the lessor talked about fronts. Anytime I get to learn something new about a much read subject I’m happy and this book made me happy.
And as a Canadian I loved the sprinkle of Canadian references that made it into this great book.
Only 7 days until this one hits shelves on June 7 2023.
Thank you to @netgalley and @penguinrandomhouse for letting me read this wonderful @c.c.humphreys book early.

Historical Fiction, especially WW II era books, are always a favourite for me. This one was no exception.

I found it took me a while to get into and I was wondering where it was actually going at some points as there were so many storylines. It started out slow for me but eventually it all started to make sense and I should have made some notes at the beginning to keep track of the characters.

It has romance (a love triangle of sorts) and the arts featured along with the details of war. I love a female spy story! Lots of aviation detail in here if that is your sort of thing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book once I got into it and the three main characters were more fleshed out. Once I could see where the story was leading I was hooked. Yes, some parts were far fetched but this is fiction so I was okay with that. I was a bit shocked by the ending but was kept in suspense towards the end of the story and stayed up late to finish it. .

This is loosely based on the author's own family and that was fascinating to read about. It also explains why this story has been so long in the making (he was waiting for family members to pass away before telling the tale).

Thank you to Net Galley, the publisher and author for the ARC of this great story.

For fans of WWII historical fiction, I highly recommend this one. Following the story of IIse a Norwegian spy and Billy a Canadian-born pilot.

Spanning several years and chance encounters this is a great WWII historical fiction novel based on facts, with mystery and romance. Based on the author's own parents history.

An in depth look into the lives of the people during World War II. This is a story about love, and the hardships that it brings- especially during war. The story brings two perspectives, one of Ilse, and the other of Billy. The two fall in love but are torn apart by war and try to find their way back to each other.
What I really loved about this book was the realism. This felt like a real story during a real war. I think it’s easy to miss a lot of details when writing about fictional characters during a real war, but Humphies did an impeccable job at researching and communicating the events. The story was actually educational in a sense, because it was so well written. This also makes the characters extremely believable. Ilse, a spy, and Billy, a pilot, are brought to life in Someday i’ll Find You, and even though this is a story of quick love, it is just as quickly heartbreaking as we are taken on the tragic journey of love lost.
Although it can be argued that the book is a tad slow, it’s pace and timeline is exactly how historical fiction and lit fic should be. There were plenty of action packed scenes, and lots of emotional moments that really get you “in the feels”.
Because of the writing style and the incredible researched content, I definitely give Someday I’ll Find You 4 stars! I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend to fellow lit fic readers!

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for sending this book for review consideration! All opinions are my own.

It is not often that you read a novel and find that is has a bibliography. The "Author's Note" is also way ahead of most of its kind. This is fiction - the pilot and the beautiful lady spy - but it has its foundation in the stark realities of Europe in the nineteen thirties and forties. And family stories that can finally be told.

I first came across C C Humphries at Bard on the Beach - and their performance of his "Shakespeare's Rebel". So this is an author that I have have actually met in Real Life. So I might be a little biased but this guy can indeed write. As well as swashbuckle. He knows his stuff, and on this occasion he is writing about something that has needed to be written but couldn't until now.

The title is courtesy of the estate of Nöel Coward - who wrote the song that is used in the story. Ilse might well be the Ilse Lund of Casblanca - but this heroine seems to be even more beautiful. Billy is not only handsome he is lucky. He refers to his nine lives - though I didn't go back to check how many of those he used.

If you are not careful you can get caught up in a book like this to the cost of all else. I found that I had to keep putting it down, just in case it got in the way of Real Life, which. of course, kept playing out right in front of me and which will not be novelised.

I think I got really lucky when I saw this book on NetGalley and got to be one of the the first 200 people to ask for it. I think you will also get caught up in it and will probably benefit from it even if you are not especially caught up by mid-twentieth century history. The people in this novel seem to be real. The coincidences are plentiful but that is exactly what happens in Real Life many times over. There is no suspension of disbelief required, especially when it is based on the lives of Real People

One of my favourite genres is historical wartime fiction and this book hit the mark for me. A poignant portrayal of a of the many facets involved in war: duty and patriotism , love and loss, spy games and hardships, to name to name a few. At the heart of the book is the possibility of love and the struggles that wartime love presents.

I can't read this book to review it due to the format, protected pdf, although I really want to. I posted this in the opinions section of Netgalley for the title and have come back to see if my request/problem was honoured, but, alas, no. Other reviews have mentioned this issue. PLEASE post your arcs in epub format!!!!!!!!

Many good things in my home have come from Salt Spring Island (eggs and lamb from my friend’s farm as well as pottery and yarn from resident artisans) and this ARC is no exception. This is the first book I’ve read from a Salt Spring author! I’m all for supporting ‘Canadian-made’ and ‘locally sourced,’ so this was a must-read for me. I wasn’t disappointed. Quality rings true.

I loved the fact that this story was inspired by the author’s parents and percolated to perfection over the years. Time and opportunity certainly intersected to give rise to this great historical fiction tale about a Norwegian spy, Ilse, and a Canadian Spitfire pilot, Billy, who fall in love only to be separated by war.

I also appreciated the second chance love story, multiple settings, and the moral conundrum presented. It kept me interested as much as the danger of a spy and a pilot during wartime.

The only disappointment - I wish I’d been able to read this on my Kindle. It got pushed to the back burner because, without this option, I had to read it sitting at my desktop where the size of the page was slightly more enlarged than my laptop or NetGalley app.

Stick with this story while the author builds the characters - you’ll be awestruck with his talent as the story picks up pace and engages you.

I was gifted this copy by Penguin Random House Canada, Doubleday Canada and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Someday I’ll Find You is an epic World War Two love story with a bit of a love triangle. The beginning is a bit slow and confusing but the second half of the book makes up for that. Full of suspense right up to the last page the author did a great job keeping me on my toes. I wish there had been a send to kindle option for this eARC as the print on the Netgalley app was small the authors writing however was on point.

Someday I'll Find You by C.C. Humphreys is a sweeping and heart-wrenching historical romance novel that transports readers back to the turbulent times of World War II. Humphreys' writing takes readers on a journey from decadent pre-war Berlin to the atrocities of Guernica, from dogfights over Sicily to an Oslo ground under the German jackboot.

Ilse’s and Billy's experiences and sacrifices feel authentic and moving, and their story is a testament to the power of love and human resilience in the face of adversity. Overall, I recommend Someday I'll Find You for anyone who loves historical romance, wartime drama, and compelling characters. Thank you to NetGalley and Doubleday Canada for the advance review copy.

The perfect balance of romance and intrigue, Someday I’ll Find You is everything I want out of a historical novel: erudite and brimming with expertly researched verisimilitude, wrapped in a winning, wonderful voice and highlighting Humphreys’ inimitable penchant for deft characterization. One of Canada’s finest historical authors proves yet again he can seamlessly weave in and out of any time period effortlessly and this beautifully rendered WWII canvas from London to the European Theatre and beyond is no exception. Destined to delight long-time fans, Someday I'll Find You will also have those uninitiated clamouring for this talented authors’ backlist.
