Murder at an Irish castle- good definitely a dramatic opening to pull you in.  The main character seems a tad unlikable but I think that's probably going to be a plot point is her character development.

An American in Scotland- definitely a strong start. I hope it doesn't go along the lines of the mc being blamed for the person's death. The setting and atmosphere really pulled me in.

A Novel Disguise- I am very excited to pick up the full version of this one. The premise is captivating and the writing is very fun. It is hard to explain too much with only a few chapters but it's a sister assuming her brother (half-brother's) role in society.

Final cut- of the entire set this is probably the one I would not pick up for myself. I'm not a huge behind the scenes movie person, but for someone looking for murder on a movie set this is right up your alley.

How the Murder Crumbles-this was definitely fun but I feel like some of the conversations felt forced and unnatural or just unrealistic and a but cheesy. It was not bad by any  means but definitely fits into the cozy more hallmark side of story telling.

A Cryptic Clue- A story of an older woman getting a job as a private librarian to a very rich man. The sample was incredible short so we did not get too much into the story aside from basic character introductions.

Take the Honey and Run- An author in Colorado finds a body and it seems like honey is the cause of death. We love a small town mystery and this gives all the vibes. I like the uniqueness of beekeeping and despite it having a rather large cast introduced pretty quickly, I think this will be a lovely and cozy summer read for me when its finally published.

These look like some promising cozy mystery starters!

Murder at an Irish Castle
Interesting start to a mystery series. The dialog in this sampler was a bit too stiff for my tastes, so it didn't draw me in. I don't think I'll be reading the full book.

An American in Scotland
Interesting start. The first and second chapters peaked my interest, though I'm not sure how I'll feel about the pacing of this one. I like the idea of an American doctor moving to Scotland and encountering a murder mystery, though it seems like there's a lot of backstory to explore.

A Novel in Disguise
A ridiculous (and rather morbid) premise, but the writing drew me right in. A slightly more morbid take on a gender swap story sounds interesting, and I liked the direction this seems to be going. I'll be checking this one out.

Final Cut
Interesting premise. The first couple chapters are jam-packed with two separate deaths / murders. I'd be interested in see what happens, but I didn't totally connect with the writing.

How the Murder Crumbles
This seems like the start to a standard cozy mystery. I don't think this one is for me, but from the start, I think fans of baking related cozy mysteries will like this.

A cryptic clue
This did not draw me in at all. Another standard cozy start.

Take the Honey and Run
Cute cover! Looks like this will be a fun multigenerational cozy.

Very pleasantly surprised by these samples. I'd thought these books wouldn't be my cup of tea, but I was wrong! I will read A Novel Disguise and strongly consider Final Cut in the future.

Reading a sampler makes you realize how hard it is to get a setting and list of characters introduced in the first three chapters of a book. These all do a great job of enticing a reader to want more. Though a few didn't have a murder in the opening chapters, the ground is laid for the big event.

Murder in an Irish Castle - Rayne McGrath wakes up on her 30th birthday to find out that her boyfriend and business partner has absconded with the bridal designer's inventory and money. At the same time, her Irish uncle has died and she has to travel to Ireland for his funeral and the reading of his will.

An American in Scotland - Emelia McRoy moves from Seattle to a small Scottish town to take over a practice and find out she's also the town coroner. Someone dies within a day of her arrival and Emelia decides she needs to investigate.

A Novel Disguise - Tiffany Woodall is a spinster working for her cruel half-brother. When he dies, fear of poverty leads her to assume his identity as a private librarian.

Final Cut - a fascinating, detailed look into movie production from the point of view of Joey Jessup, a costumer. The production team has a host of characters, one of whom winds up dead.

How the Murder Crumbles - Mallory Monroe bought her aunt's bake shop and is husting to make it a success. While a reporter is visiting to profile her, a woman arrives to accuses Mallory of stealing a recipe. We don't see the murder in the sample, but it's pretty obvious who is going to have an "accident."

A Cryptic Clue - Jane Hunter, a not-quite-ready-to-retire librarian who has been forced out of academia takes a job as a private librarian and archivist. No murder happens in the sample and I'm curious about seeing the rest of this one!

Take the Honey and Run - Bailey Briggs arrives at her family's rural Colorado ranch to find her grandmother threatening to murder the mayor if he comes on their property again. It's pretty obvious who is going to die in this one! Fun addition: Bailey runs into her high school boyfriend on the road to the family ranch.

Blurbs are all well and good, But samplers are so much better. They are such a great way of getting a better understanding of a book that you may want to read. This Sampler is a great mix for those who love to read mysteries. Something for everyone…from historical mystery to cozy..

I found FINAL CUT by Marjorie McCown and A CRYTIC CLUE by Victoria Gilbert particularly intriguing. So intriguing that at the end of each sample I was perturbed that I couldn’t read on! And while not all of the samples were to my taste, for the most part I found them all interesting and well written. My interest is definitely piqued!

I love reading these samplers. They seem to offer a snapshot of a new book in a decent length to really get a feel for the book. I will have to be on the lookout for at least one of these now.

f always enjoy samplers. They are a wonderful way to add to reading lists and give readers something to anticipate. This particular one features information on and excerpts from four upcoming mysteries. I am intrigued by all of them. A Novel Disguise is an historical mystery. Final Cut is set in the movies. How the Murder Crumbles includes food and, finally there is A Cryptic Clue which has a retired librarian as protagonist. Note the pub date and add this sampler to your TBR pile.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for this title. All opinions are my own.
