I have only read The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde so I wasn't sure what to expect reading his fairy stories but they were fine. Some were more interesting than others. Some ended quite oddly and abruptly. Some had morals attached. An interesting read.

The Complete Fairy Stories of Oscar Wilde by Oscar Wilde, Philippe Jullian 5/5

Children's Fiction

This is the 70th anniversary gift edition and it is stunning. I love a classic fairy tale story and this book let me all in my feelings taking me back to the story my parents would read to me. The cover of this book is truly what caught my attention, one I could love to add to my bookshelf and share with my children.

Thank you NetGalley and Duckworth Books for the eARC.

It's been quite a while since I've read something by Oscar Wilde, but almost instantly when starting this collection of his fairy tales I am taken back into his wonderful talent for story crafting and beautiful descriptions.

I haven't read his fairy tales before but I really enjoyed dipping into them, and found that the illustrations added into this special edition are so beautiful! It was so enjoyable to see these sketches alongside the stories.

My favourite stories of the collection were The Happy Prince, The Selfish Giant, The Devoted Friend, The Young King, and The Star-Child! But this collection has many more too that are equally as wonderful to read. These particular stories I mention were especially wonderful for the way they look at social injustice and potential for reform. Working it into a charming fairy tale prose that appeals to everyone!

The way the stories reflect Wilde's natural talent for story-telling, his dry wit and in many ways a commentary upon human and/or political nature was so fun to read and has made me eager to pick up Oscar Wilde's work more often in future! I heartily recommend this collection of Wilde's.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
I haven't read a lot of Oscar Wilde, but was intrigued by the thought that he had written 'new folktales' or 'fairy' tales. They weren't what I was expecting (maybe I was expecting wistful Celtic folktales?).
It's been well produced and edited, and the illustrations were lovely. The language is very poetic and obviously archaic.
I found the stories interesting from an historical point of view, and appreciated the Afterword by Wilde's son.
Other reviewers have mentioned being reminded of Hans Christian Andersen, and I did see the similarity in these stories. They are all allegorical, and while in the 'style' of traditional fairy stories, they have more 'modern' morals. There were no happy endings and I found all the stories to be quite sad and depressing.
Worth a read for the historical and literary context.

Title: The Complete Fairy Stories of Oscar Wilde
The new, stunning 70th-anniversary gift edition

Of course being Irish and over the age of ten, I knew who Oscar Wilde was. Though probably shameful to admit I don't think I had read much if any of his work before now. So it did come of some what of a surprise that I didn't like this book of his work.

I did like his turn of phrase and writing style but over all there was just too much of a religious feel to his work for me.

As I own some of his other works I wont be writing him off altogether but this was definitely not for me. Which is such a shame.

In this collection are the nine fairytales of Oscar Wilde beginning with The Happy Prince. I really enjoyed it, I’ve never read any of them before and they are all beautifully written with familiar fairytale characters(princes and princesses, talking animals, mermaids and giants) and themes (it’s better to be kind than mean) but with originality and imagination. I was never bored, or felt it was childish. There’s some quite sad moments (not just the happy prince but the poor nightingale as well!) and some humour too. A lovely book.

Thanks to Duckworth Books and Netgalley for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Honestly, it feels sort of silly to review such a classic, but it was really lovely to get to visit a corner of Wilde's writing that I hadn't encountered before! The illustrations felt nostalgically reminiscent of the children's books I used to read, and all in all, it was a lovely time.

Oscar Wilde wrote a variety of fairytales - some popular ones, like the deeply romantic The Nightingale and the Rose that has by now become part of collective memory and folklore, and some deeply weird fables like that one about the rocket I wished to immediately forget after reading. But while I anticipated the devoutly Catholic sentiments in them them, I was not ready for the antisemitism and, frankly, the racist aspects of a good portion of these stories, which were sadly not addressed by the editor and publisher of the edition I was offered to read. Mr. Wilde may be dead today, but harmful views like these should not be printed without appropriate commentary in the year of our lord 2023.

It was great to re-visit Oscar Wilde's classic short stories, presented in this lovely new collection with black and white illustrations (not many in number though, only about two per story). This book will be a great introduction for children to the timeless tales of love, kindness and sacrifice exemplified in stories like "The Happy Prince" and "The Selfish Giant", as well as to some Wilde's lesser known stories like "The Fisherman and his Soul".

This is 75th anniversary gift edition of the book. The illustrations were made by world renowned artist Phillippe Jullian.

I have a ebook by NetGalley of this book. Did I miss the illustrations, yes! But Oscar Wilde dark short stories took me in the journey painting pictures blond my imagination. That said if I come across this book, I am buying it!! I love all things Oscar Wilde. His view of world is gray stark to vibrant pinks…this is kindness in ruthlessness and fairness in unfairness. Even though the stories could be depressing, they have me thinking at the end. This book left me even more of an ardent admirer of Oscar Wilde.

This is a collection of Oscar Wilde's shprt stories in total 9. The language was not hard to understand at all even for a non-native speaker. It was full of rhetorical devices and a beautiful language that depicts important moral stories. These stories is suitable for children but also all ages, as there is always a deeper meaning to every story that are very important and still resemble the world today. For instance, that no matter how much money or any materialistic goods, it never can be good as true love (which is also more worth). One can learn a lot from these stories and I can totally recommend it to everyone. The illustrations are beautiful as well and they were always suitable. They matched the fairy vibes of the stories.

A beautiful edition of Oscar Wilde's short stories including 5 stories from Complete Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde and 4 stories from House Of Pomegranates. All stories are rather dark fairytales as they used to be, most of the time they do not have the happily ever after children's fairytales nowadays have. I think my favourite stories were The Happy Prince and The Star Child.

The Complete Fairy Stories of Oscar Wilde by Philippe Jullian is a beautiful illustration. A bundle of stories that can make one think and look in the mirror of self. The stories are enriched with mysticism. They engrave a strong moral lesson, perhaps the lessons of life. Having an Irish background, Oscar Wilde’s stories have a folklorist essence to them. They also touch the magical realm with their supernatural powers. Mostly, the stories are narrated by talking animals, flowers, birds, dwarfs, witches, giants, or local folks of a village or town. The stories have a strong sense of place, like a kingdom with a king, a prince or princes, an enchanted forest or a garden.

Almost in every story, there is an element of medievalism and religion. It’s one of the most notable features of Oscar Wilde’s stories. The poetic touch in stories and the use of polished language are beautiful and carry a deeper meaning. One appreciates Oscar Wilde’s elegant skills in writing. Wisdom sparkles the basic theme. The reader cannot resist admiring the art of narration, which uplifts the story to a level where almost every person can relate himself to one of the characters present in these fairy tales.

I really appreciate Philippe for this book and for gathering up some of the heart-touching fairy tales of Oscar Wilde and bringing them up to the audience. The book can be a break for anyone, the young and the old, to take a pause from their busy life and peep into the time and era where knowledge and wisdom are lessons. And are still very much applicable to our daily lives. Where every fairy story takes you on a journey of self analyzation. There you can open your heart and go through every story with deep thought and meaning to life. Highly recommended for a general audience. Great effort Philippe Jullian, well done.
