It’s been exactly six years since I read my first D. I. Lottie Parker book. We’ve had our ups and downs but we survived them, and six years later we’re now in her 12th case. I flew through it but I have to confess that there were so many moving parts in this mystery that my brain hurt a little bit 😅.

Éilis Lawlor is a young woman that, after a night out with her support group for widows, disappears leaving no trace behind. When a couple days later her body is found with injuries similar to those of another woman who was a member of the same group, Lottie and her team will immerse themselves in a complex case in which everyone is keeping secrets. Will they uncover them before there’s another body?

If you’re familiar with Patricia Gibney’s work, you already know what to expect from this latest installment in the series. She’s a master at delivering gripping police procedurals with plots so convoluted you can’t even begin to imagine how she’s gonna be able to fit all the puzzle pieces together. But she does it time and time again, and Three Widows was not the exception.

As I said at the beginning, there was a moment when I thought I’d have to do a diagram to keep straight all the character and their multiples ties to each other. Once again I take my hat off to the author for being able to create such a complicated story while keeping the reader on tenterhooks right until the end.

I was a bit let down this time about the villain and their motive. I don’t think all the hints we were given throughout the story about the big secret and the expectations they created, were met when it all was revealed. To me, it all felt too out of proportion.

Lottie has grown a lot since we first met her. She’s had her moments, going from belligerent and controlling to respectful of her team. I think now she’s back in the middle. It’s already time for her to let go of certain things. It’s so off putting how she talks to some members of her team, asking them for complete focus on the case when she’s the first one who has left everything hanging when it was her family on the line. Someone should tell her that she can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar! In her defense I’ll say she has a lot of open fronts.

I devoured this in 24 hours, so get ready to get completely hooked on yet another fantastic investigation by one of the queens of the police procedurals.

Again an absolutely gripping thriller by Patricia Gibney. The Lotti Parker series does not disappoint in that regard. I really enjoyed the unfolding of the story and the combination of cases together with the private lives of the detectives.

There’s no doubt that I love this series. This particular entry, however, didn’t grab me like the previous ones. There were so many characters & for me, that took away from the story. I wish Lottie & her team had more focus. I still look forward to the next one, even if this one was my favorite.

Author Patricia Gibney continues to find intriguing new cases for Detective Lottie Parker to solve. This one is another winner and I was gripped by the mystery and I couldn't make up my mind who the murderer was.

Copy kindly received via NetGalley for an honest review.

Lottie and her team had their work cut out for them to find out who the psychopath was in these brutal killings. Between finding the killer, bickering detectives and things in her personal life, Lottie has a lot to deal with. This was an interesting read and a good ending with great characters.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Three Widows' by Patricia Gibney.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Patricia Gibney, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 10th February 2023.

This is the third book I have read by this author. It is also the twelfth book in the 'Detective Lottie Parker' series but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read book 10 in this series 'Little Bones' and book 11 'Guilty Girl' and would highly recommend them.

I was originally drawn to this book by its stunning eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. I am a huge fan of Patricia and if this is even a quarter as good as 'Little Bones' and 'Guilty Girl' it is guaranteed to be an absolute page turner!! The synopsis stated that this book is 'An absolutely gripping and totally addictive thriller that will keep you racing through the pages all night long. Fans of Robert Dugoni, Rachel Caine and Karin Slaughter will devour Three Widows in one sitting! .' I am a huge fan of Karin Slaughter so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue, 103 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Ireland 🇮🇪 , UK 🇬🇧. I always enjoy when books are set in the UK as I'm from Wales and have sometimes visited areas mentioned in the book. This makes it easier to picture where the scenes are set at times. I have in fact been to Ireland several times and love it there so am looking forward to "visiting" again.

This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Detective Lottie Parker and Mark Boyd. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything. To have the benefit of both first and third person perspective ensures you don't miss out on anything.

WARNING ⚠ ADDICTION ALERT ⚠
Wow!! What an absolutely riveting, non stop action packed crime thriller!!!

I was absolutely hooked from the first page to the last!!! This book is extremely well written with vivid descriptions that absorbs the reader into the storyline. The cover, title and synopsis suit the plot perfectly.

Although this is the twelfth book in the series I had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.

This was yet another explosive addition to this fantastic series where Patricia completely emerges the reader into the storyline. I have only read this book and the previous two books but cannot wait to get my hands on the previous books in this addictive series as well as any more new releases. The storyline is filled with suspense, crime, friendship, romance, murder, secrets, family and lies and filled with tension which left me on the edge of my seat biting my nails with my heart pounding throughout. It is very fast paced and rammed with action and loads of red herrings. I loved the fact that you get to see what was going on from so many perspectives. The main ones are Lottie and Mark but you also get to see what happens through the eyes of potential suspects along with possible victims but not only that you also get to see through the eyes of the killer too!! Patricia has absolutely everything covered and I absolutely love books like this as you really do get to see so much that it means you get further and further emerged into the storyline leaving you shocked and bewildered when you look up to discover your reality!! Patricia manages to drip feed the reader with titbits of information to allow you to try to solve it yourself without giving too much away. It is like you are Lottie trying to discover what is going on with your team surrounding you! However, I had no idea who was involved and was shocked when it was revealed so a HUGE well done to Patricia on shocking me. I have read so many crime books it is getting harder and harder for me to be surprised but you achieved it so congratulations!! Patricia also did an amazing job of weaving the subject of dementia into the storyline as we see how Lottie's mother is struggling in the same terrible way that so many dementia sufferers do and how it affects the family. My Grandparents had dementia and it is a truly terrible thing to watch a loved one suffer with it. My heart truly went out to Lottie while she was trying to look after her while trying to solve a crime while also worrying about Mark's ex wife and what would happen with his son. I absolutely loved the explosive twist at the end which I was not expecting so another huge well done!! This book is an absolutely explosive addition to this addictive series and I cannot wait to see what Lottie and Mark get up to next!!!

I read approximately half of this book on kindle and listened to approximately half on audio book. I must also give a huge congratulations to the narrator Michele Moran who not only brought the storyline to life by really portraying the emotions through his voice but by doing absolutely fantastic impressions of males and females as well as accents so a HUGE congratulations Michele! I cannot imagine that this was anywhere near an easy feat!!! I am looking forward to discovering more books read by yourself as you definitely have a perfect "book" voice!! I sometimes struggle to absorb the storyline through an audio book but if you are the same as me I can promise you will not have that problem with this amazing narrator!!

DO NOT EVEN LOOK AT THE FIRST PAGE WITHOUT CLEARING YOUR SCHEDULES AS THIS WILL KEEP YOU HOOKED!!!

I absolutely love Lottie, Mark and the majority of the team and they have become like old friends to me who I Iook forward to meeting again in every book and miss them between books. It was quite sad coming to the end of this book and knowing I am going to have to say Goodbye to them for a while. However, I was pleased to read that Patricia has already started writing book thirteen in the series which I cannot wait to delve into! It is vital for me that I 'click' with the main protagonists and I love Lottie's kick butt attitude and that she doesn't take any CRUD. I'm looking forward to getting to know her better from the previous books. Mark is a sweet guy and my heart absolutely went out to him when it came to his son and his ex wife continuously trying to dictate to him while he is constantly threatening that she will take him away from him. I have enjoyed watching his relationship with his son develop and progress and reading about his past, especially the bond with his son and I really hope there is a happy ending for both father and son!!
I enjoyed the fiery team dynamics and enjoyed that there was tension and fights in the team as it portrays the truth that a team won't always get along. The only team member I was not a fan of was McKeown and I think he is definitely up Farrell's backside and I don't trust him one bit.

Congratulations Patricia on a fantastic read and this is exactly why you are on my favourite crime author list!!! I am looking forward to reading your previous and future successes and here's to your next 🥂!!

Overall a page turning and addictive explosive crime thriller that will leave you on the edge of your seat throughout!!

Genres covered in this book include Thriller, Suspense, Psychological Fiction, Mystery, Police Procedural, Crime Thriller, British Detective Stories, Mysteries, Serial Killer Thrillers, Hard-boiled Mystery and Crime Fiction amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Angela Marsons, CL Taylor, Robert Dugoni, Rachel Caine, Carol Wyer, Karin Slaughter, PJ Tracy and anyone looking for an explosive new series to sink their teeth into!!!

This was my first work by this author, and I enjoyed it! I love thrillers that include the killer's POV as well. This book had everything you'd want in a thriller. It was descriptive, mysterious, and had great twists. Thank you for my copy!

"Three Widows" is an excellent thriller. At first, the action was very slow. I wanted to put this book back on the shelf. However, I gave her a chance. And you know what? I won. The action kicked off. I had my type, actually 2 types, who is a murderer. Unfortunately, my picks didn't work out. For this, the author is to be applauded. I liked the plot twists. Mysterious murders. I have long wondered about the killer's motive. I had no idea why he inflicted such excruciating pain on his victims. When I found out the truth, I felt bad. It was my first reading encounter with the work of Patricia Gibney. "Three Widows" is the 12th book in the Detective Lottie Parker series. I need to know the earlier parts. I'm waiting for volume 13. If you like strong thrillers, be sure to read "Three Widows". You will meet various heroes here. Everyone here has something to hide.

Took a bit to get into but it was worth it. The way this authors mind works to create such intricate connections is fascinating.

A recent window has just gone missing from her house, while her two children slept in their beds.
It’s Detective Lottie parker who is on the case. But when the missing person is found dead with her mouth taped, wearing a yellow dress it won’t be long before she finds another; in the same way. A chilling case with one thing linking all victims.

I loved this from the first page. Gibney writes certain chapters which are narrated by the killer and leave us in suspense and a chilling feeling as we continue to read on. I loved the background of the main character, showing so much depth.

This is actually the 12th book within the series, but the first of which I have read; I found everything really easy to follow and want to go back and read the earlier novels in the series.

From my blog: Always With a Book

This is the 12th book in Patricia Gibney’s Detective Lottie Parker series and this series is so incredibly good! Yes, it’s dark and not for everyone, but I do love my crime fiction and this detective series continues to be one of my favorites!

Once again, we have a fresh and original story here with this latest installment. I’ve found that this has been the case with each and every book so far and as someone who read a lot of series and sometimes gets series fatigue, I have yet to feel that with this series. I feel like I am that kid in the candy store just waiting for each new book to come out with this series, knowing I will not be getting the same old story, and more importantly I will be getting additional character development which has been the shining point in this series.

This time, the case that Lottie and her team find themselves working on is so much more complex than it first appears to be. It takes quite a toll on them, especially as both Lottie and Boyd have their own family issues they are dealing with – again, this is that character development that I love and that Gibney does so well. As the case is moving forward, we see how these detectives balance work and life, and we get what I feel is a real-life look at how hard juggling the two might be.

My favorite part, as always, are the parts we get that are narrated by the killer. There is just something so eerie and chilling, especially not knowing exactly who this person is until the very end, but knowing that we have “seen” them interact with the other characters. It just adds an extra layer of suspense and tension to the story that I absolutely love.

I cannot recommend this series enough. If you haven’t read any, start with this one and I promise you you will end up loving it and wanting to go back to the beginning. They are addicting, fast-paced reads that are just so good! I am already counting the days until the next one comes out!

Three Widows by Patricia Gibney
Detective Lottie Parker #12

Gruesome murders are happening one after another as Lottie and her team search for the serial killer committing the crimes.

What I liked:
* Catching up with Lottie’s work and personal life and wondering what will happen with her and Boyd, her mother’s deteriorating mind, and what will happen with her son, daughter and grandson.
* The police procedural aspects of the story
* Portions that were told from the perspective of the killer
* The update on personal lives of the various characters that are part of the series
* The complexity of the case and how difficult it was to figure out who the killer was
* The twist at the end dealing with the bog finding
* That I could follow the story even though I have not read every book in the series

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* The serial killers motivation

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC – This is my honest review.

3 Stars

Once again, Patricia Gibney delivers not only a snack a whole meal of a book. Why a meal, you ask? It's only because I devoured this story in one sitting.

Three Widows embodies intrigue from the first page. The story opens with the signature Bookouture thriller technique: a climax sneak peek that will surely gear you up for the story to come.

Gibney's writing style is top-notch. Despite the so many intricately connected lines of the story, she was able to narrate and guide the readers effectively. Effective figures of speech are a primary success in the story. Every scene is set up expertly with imagery, metaphors, and others.

The author also employed good character crafting style which made the story all the more interesting. Every character is an enigma. And trying to determine the whats and whys of their personas made my brain whirr in overdrive.

The antagonist's motivation let me down a bit but the ending made up for it. Looking forward to reading more of Gibney's works!

Three Widows Patricia Gibney
This is book 12 in the Lottie Parker series, one of my all time favourite series.
I love Lottie, and especially love that these books are set in Ireland.
As the body count starts to rise, I I kept deciding on a suspect, only for them to be ruled out.
I loved every page, looking forward to book 13!

I always love seeing the new cover for Patricia Gibney’s books. The monochromatic scene with that pop of color. Always gets my attention. And the books are as good as the cover. Now I know the blurb lists reading in one sitting. I was not able to do that because the book was 500 pages and I never get to sit and read for that long, but if I could I definitely would.

This is the perfect blend of the team solving a crime and having a personal life. Now the personal life bits carry over from book to book as the characters expand and grow, but I think there is enough detail to pick a book up in the middle of the series as I haven’t read them all and still enjoyed this one. As with real life, the team in this one gets distracted some by their personal issues as they try and work together to figure out who keeps killing the women in the widows’ support group. And I really sympathize with Lottie as she is dealing with her mother’s memory issues.

I’m quite good at figuring out the killer long before the end of a lot of books, but to be honest, I didn’t even wager a guess in this one. The complexity and layers kept me from homing in on one suspect for any length of time. A serial killer targeting a widow’s support group, where one member’s husband is missing and not actually dead is this a red herring or is it related? Brutal deaths and not a lot to go on. I enjoyed the team working together to solve the murders.

I was also lucky enough to listen to the audiobook narrated by Michele Moran. Her narration was spot on and I could listen to her accent for forever. She really grounded the story for me. She seamlessly switches from character to character and even to the killer all while not distracting from the plot.

I think anyone who loves crime novels will love this series whether in print or audio. I’m definitely heading out to track down the books I have missed.

I have read most books in the Detective Lottie Parker Series, and Three Widows did not disappoint me! It's a fast-paced story where Lottie is in over her head with personal problems, her mother has dementia, and her house is a never-ending source of problems, also Boyd (her partner) is having problems with her ex-wife and their son. The crimes she has to investigate are appalling, widows are being killed and the only link between them is a widows' group they used to attend. Lottie and her team, as always, go the extra mile to help the families and find the culprit. Very entertaining and a must-read if you enjoy this genre.
I thank the author, her publisher, and NetGalley for the copy of this book.

Book 12 in what is one of my absolute favourite detective series. We are back again with Lottie, Boyd, Kirby and the rest of the detective team in Ragmullin. This is another unputdownable read in this series and I was completely gripped right from the very first page. A thrilling read that is full of twists and turns that will have you hooked from the very beginning.

A young woman is found badly beaten, in an oversized dress & her eyes removed. Another woman disappears leaving her two young children alone in the house. The connection between them is that they both belonged to a group for those suffering a loss. The group met up regularly to socialise. The other two women in the group don't seem to have any useful information but on investigation there are some curious links between the women. Once again Lottie Parker is assailed from all sides. Family difficulties, Boyd distracted by the reappearance of his ex & her team at loggerheads.

I have been a huge fan of this series from the very start but I found this one a disappointment. The style seemed different, there were too many designer names cropping up in descriptions, & the plot seemed overly complicated. Hopefully this is just a blip & #13 will be back to its usual brilliance.

Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
