I thoroughly enjoyed this novel (to the point where he may very well become an auto purchase of mine). Between the insight into Mexican history, and the love between Ramon and Maria, I simply could not put this title down. I also really enjoyed LaMotte's writing style.

Extra points for the novel being short and easy to read.

An ARC that I got from Netgalley. A story about an indian cowboy hero who got separated from his lover. Not a fan of the writing style tho. It was as though the writer tried to tell the whole story in full speed but the story still feels too long. But the story is really engaging, I wanna know how it ends. A very depressing story, goes to show that war only takes everything we love and more. I learned about indian mexican cultures from the book, also about several aztec gods. It also made me google the Mexican Revolution. Pretty fun with the fighting scenes and all.

A fast paced and at times emotive romance read that also deals with hard hitting issues such as colonialism. i couldn't put it down

LaMotte's tale was a really good read. With a quick pace and unfussy prose, he is able to tell not only a love story but one of revolution and colonialism. As Ramon and Maria are separated by selfish and evil men, so too are the resources of Mexico being taken from her people. It is a tale of choices made when removed from a life planned and hoped for, of the hurt and damage that follows when violence becomes a constant companion.

I am always hesitant to read romance written by men as they always incapable of writing female characters. But here, LaMottte keeps it simple and as such it works really well un garnering empathy and appreciation for his characters. They are vulnerable, independent, strong, damaged, and thus become relatable.

I did not expect to like this as much as I ended up doing.
