Samantha Irby's books are same-old, same-old for me and I mean that as a huge compliment. Irby is funny and witty and readers know what to expect when they pick up one of Irby's books.

While this was not my favorite of Samantha Irby's books, it is still a fairly solid collection of humorous essays. I think my favorite was the first essay, "I Like It!". Which, maybe was the issue for me. It started off really well and then I felt like it kind of went downhill. That's not to say there were not other good essays, because of course there were since I gave this 4 stars. BUT none of them lived up to the first.
While Irby has always been very open about bodily functions and issues I felt this collection leaned too heavily into those topics. It was difficult for me to want to read some of the essays that just kept talking about poop and pee the whole time. I expected it to be brought up sometimes, but this was just..a lot.
Overall, this is more or less what one expects from Samantha Irby. If you enjoyed her previous books as much as I did, you should give it a chance.

I love Samantha Irby's books and this one is no different. I prefer to listen to her read the audio version, but Netgalley gave me an ebook (thanks Netgalley!!!) so I had to use my imagination, which was fine. It's unfortunately true that I've never seen an episode of Sex in the City (or is it Sex and the City?), so the essay about that was a little lost on me, but I wish I had seen it because I'm sure that chapter is just as funny as all the others if you've seen the show.

Someone in another review said that this kind of humor just isn't her style and I am the opposite of that person. This is exactly my kind of humor.

Samantha Irby's writing improves with each subsequent book. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

Not my favorite Irby collection, but it ends with a series of great essays. I don’t know if it’s the nun porn or the overwhelming too-close-to-home diarrhea stories, but this collection just didn’t capture me like her previous books.

You know what charmed me to pieces? Sam’s take on Sex & The City. I agree with her takes 100% and it that essay was one of my favorite things I read all of 2023. Inspiring a rewatch of the show 😆

Quietly Hostile does not disappoint! It is everything I come to love and expect from Samantha Irby. I'm super glad she's chronicling our aging process.

I'm trying to catch up on my TBR list, and listening to this audiobook made me wonder why I waited so long. Yes, I know it's crude and talks about tons of private things, but it made me laugh out loud so many times! While I'm probably not in the target audience for this book (read, old), there is still so much relatable - and some of it may be more relatable as you are older! Not sure I've ever heard someone be so brutally honest about herself and her bodily functions before, let alone a celebrity, so major kudos for that. We're all human, after all, and a little humor goes a long way.

Samantha Irby is so funny, her collections always have me laughing. I love her sharp descriptions, upfront confrontation of being a human in the world and how she discusses important topics of culture, health and body, society, and so many more with incredible and amusing candor and frankness. Love her approach to every topic and am always totally engaged in her work. This collection was just as delightful, surprising, engaging, thought provoking, and interesting. Eager for more.

Samantha Irby is an interesting person, but her I find her writing style to be quite annoying. She's a very frank and brutally honest lady, but sometimes it can too much for some readers. Sometimes when she talks about her bodily functions, it makes me wince. I don't find bathroom humor to be humorous. She seems like she's a fun person, but her writing is not for me.

Ms. Samantha Irby can make anyone laugh - anyone with a sense of humor, of course. Another wonderfully witty, bizarre, and relatable af tome from the queen of all of those things, these essays made me laugh, roll my eyes in sheer relation, and honestly just wonder how this woman can write a list of her fave Dave Matthews songs and I'll read it. as someone who barely knows anything about Dave Matthews. Can I be her bestie already? Please?

I've read Samantha Irby's last books and they've honestly been some of the only books to make me actually laugh out loud while reading. This one was no exception. Her stories on the stupidly hilarious and annoying parts of life make her feel like the friend in the friend group that everyone wants to be around for the sheer fact that she's endlessly entertaining and downright hilarious.

I will literally read anything Samantha Irby writes until ... forever.

I will always snatch any Irby book! I hate Sex and fhe City, but I love Irby so much I read the entire (fairly long) SAT.C chapter happily.

I adore Samantha Irby, so she can do no wrong in my eyes. Whether reading her words on the page or listening to her on audiobook, she manages to convey the same humor, disbelief, and delighted confusion. She should be required reading for all humans.

I love Samantha Irby's wit and humor. I've read all of her essay collections and was delighted to receive a copy of Quietly Hostile. Any author who reviews episodes of Judge Mathis and can humorously tackle IBS is someone to read in my book.

Huge Samantha Irby fan. Such a hilarious writer. This just wasn't my favorite of hers. Hard not to compare it to her other collections when she has such an impressive body of work!

Cutting, incisive and hilarious. This was my first Samantha Irby book and I now plan to be a completist. The way she honestly shares about the complexities of adult family relationships while also providing an in depth retrospective about sex in the city is masterful.

3.5 stars.

How was this my first introduction to Samantha Irby? How did I not know she was Black? Oof. I feel dumb. lol. Some of the essays were funny. Some were completely off the wall (reimagining Sex and the City episodes? But why? -Nothing- else to write about?!). But Irby's honesty won me out. Plus the skunk screaming on the cover is pure *chef's kiss*

This was requested when I first found out about NetGalley and I had requested so many ARCs that I could not get to all of them before they were archived. I really wanted to get to this one, as it seemed interesting. If I can find this somewhere for a reasonable price, I will try to get it! I am giving this book three stars, as I don't want to give it a good or bad rating, since I did not get to it and we have to leave a star rating.
