This book is not only about immigration but about the racism and scammers and other failings of the immigration lottery. I think the author did a wonderful job showing immigration from every side including historically a in modern day I also think touching on the Irish immigration or something I wasn’t expecting but was happy to see when reading this book. I think the government admitted instances have made plans and pass laws to benefit people but in the execution of those plans head unforeseen consequences and when they started restricting immigration and then came out with the lottery that is exactly what happened. I do think we need to change loss to wear those who have established lives and prove to be a benefit instead of a subtractor in America should get to stay because too often we are sending good people away while bad people get in. I don’t know what exactly is the right thing to do about immigration but this Book is a great start. They have many examples of what not to do. I think this book should be a must read for all high school students because when we know better we do better. This is a book I highly recommend it should be mandatory reading. I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

Dreamland by Carly Goodman is the type of book that my parents or grandparents would love: breaking down topics into easy ideas and not digging too deep. I do not like that and the topic of the immigration lottery is something I find immensely interesting and frightening but Goodman never made it interesting in Dreamland.

I never felt that Goodman’s writing was worth book length and instead would fit best as an editorial. I hate saying that but I have read better editorials on this subject.
