We love a woman in power. This book gave as much women empowerment as it possibly could and I was living for it. It was kind of giving Mulan vibes which I love.

I only got through the first half of this book before it expired, but I'll definitely be buying it to finish it! A fun twist on a classic, can't wait to finish it.

While A SPARK IN THE CINDERS was a decently unique take on a well-trodden fairytale, that was all this work had going for it. The prose needed work and I struggled to retain interest while reading. The characters felt underwhelmingly simple, which I felt was a huge waste of the premise, which offered family dynamics the readers could--if done well--really sink their teeth into. Romantically, it felt pretty typical for most YA books, so by the end, I didn't care too much for the romance subplot. Comparing this work to THE CRUEL PRINCE may be misleading for some--and ultimately lead to disappointment.

This is just lovely. One of the better retellings of Cinderella from the stepsister point of view that I have read. I like Ara's strength and ability to realize she is more than the abuse and manipulation she has received from her mother. I also like that this time the older sister is the one who is redeemed because it seems in many other versions the younger sister is the better one.

Once again, Jenny Elder Moke delivers! A fantastic retelling that is refreshing in its originality. While new twists on old fairy tales have become trendy, many have also become somewhat redundant. This story is anything but. Relatable, brave characters that are badass female leads worthy for all young girls to look to.

Original and intriguing, A Spark in the Cinders caught my attention since its beginning and kept me glued to the screen until the very end.
