This book is not your average murder mystery. The setting: high school, sets it apart and the string of murders is the reciepe for a horror novel but Kate Weston manages to make it interesting and oh so funny! I related and Kerry from the jump and found her the best person to follow through this story. She is intelligent and funny and ready to take on the mystery. Murder on a School Night gives me some Veronica Mars vibes and I loved it.

Synopsis:
A hilarious murder mystery–rom-com from author and comedian Kate Weston investigates the sinister side of social media when bullying turns bloody—and a string of classmate deaths by menstrual cup and sanitary pad sets amateur sleuth Kerry hot on the trail of a menstrual murderer. Perfect for fans of Truly Devious and Fleabag.

There’s never a good time to find a dead body, sure. But what about finding a dead body while you’re trying to kiss your crush?

Kerry had different plans for her first high school party—like not going. All she wanted to do was stay home in the safety of retro rom-coms and her strict retainer schedule. Instead her BFF, fiercely outgoing mystery-fanatic Annie, has roped her into going to the party to investigate who’s cyberbullying Heather, the most popular girl in school.

Finding herself getting close with her dreamy crush is odd enough, but when the two of them discover Heather’s second in command, Selena, suffocated with a menstrual cup, things get really weird.

And when a second student turns up dead, this time with a sanitary pad across the eyes, Annie and Kerry—no matter how much she resists—are officially on the case to stop the menstrual murderer . . . period.

3.5/5 stars! This book is weird and I really liked it. It was such a bizarre premise but handled with so much humor. I flew through this book and it reminded me of the vibes from "How to Survive Your Murder." The plot was a little shallow and it used comedy to hold the story together, but it was a fun quick read.

I received an advance review copy for free through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily

What a cute gem of a YA-mystery read! To start off with, I really enjoyed all the pop culture reference in the book. The references felt so timely and made the book quirky in a good way. I also thought there was very strong character development - I wanted to be Annie and Kerry's friend and felt like I could fit in.

A strong theme without the book was feminism, which a lot of books (esp YA) don't deal properly with. It was so refreshing that this book actually addressed things like menustration.

Personally what I did not like about the book was the dramatics like that Kerry was made to be so so upset about the breakup with Scott when it had only been a hot minute. Yes, teenage love is different but it felt like overkill. Another example of what I found a little too dramatic was when Annie and Kerry reunited one night after a fight. All in all, this was a cute read!

My Review:

8.5/10

Who's ready for a short review? I am! I wanted to say thank you so much to the people at Harpercollins gave me the opportunity for me to read this dARC. I am mainly going to talk about the actual writing in this story. Not so much of the story line, but the writing.

This book from the first chapter had me tearing up from laughing so hard. In the first chapter, there is this whole bit of the two girls riding their bikes and screaming anatomy words. I knew I would like this book.

I didn't know what to expect exactly in a "Humor & Satire" book category. And after reading this book, I finally understand. Humorous writing hits differently than let's say an SNL skit. I mean the murderer in this story is called the "Menstrual Murderer." Every few pages there is one joke that catches you off guard, and takes a minute to collect yourself. (At some points in the story, I needed to put the book down and sit on the terrace for some fresh air to contain my laughter.)

I really enjoyed reading this book, and I would've given it a 10/10, but there were some things that needed to be talked about. Firstly some of the jokes in this book went over my head. Secondly, the story line sometimes ran thin and pulled me out of the novel. And I think it is because I am not the target audience for this novel. I feel the target audience for this is girls and women more than men. However I still really enjoyed reading this book.

Murder On A School Night brought something new and interesting to a mystery novel, that I haven't really seen before. And it is that reason I give this book such a high praise. If you are a fan of:

- Saturday Night Live

- Pretty Little Liars

- Only Murders in The Building

This book is the perfect read for you.

This is the next “Good Girls Guide to Murder”. I loved this book! I was not expecting the ending at all, I thought I had it all figured out and then was totally proven wrong!

This book was unfortunately a let down. I was so excited to read it and it seemed like something that was right up my ally. The two main characters - Kerry and Annie were fun to follow along, but the plot was lacking. The book brought up a lot of topics that are considered taboo, which I thought was good, but sometimes it seemed a little too forced.

I also thought that the ending was so lackluster. There was no strong motive and it seemed like something that was made just to try and "shock" readers. None of the characters were relatable and a lot of times they were either really or annoying or making really poor decisions.

I was really hoping to like this book, but it just didn't do it for me. What could've been a fun murder mystery, turned into a long, drawn out book with a motive that fell flat.

I had a very difficult time meshing with this book. I think the humor wasn’t for me or maybe it felt a bit too middle school? It just made me cringe too hard whenever I read it and I ultimately couldn’t finish the book. Thanks to netgalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Kerry & Annie are best friends who are obsessed with mysteries and true crime. When they agree to help a popular girl at a party, they find her best friend dead - the first of a string of murders. They navigate cliques, teen romance, and the patriarchy to solve the mystery and identify the serial killer!

What I loved:
The feminism! I loved that Kerry and Annie are checking anyone who is casually misogynistic or tries to dismiss them because they are teenage girls.
The twist! This was a satisfying mystery, very much in the vein of Miss Marple or Sherlock Holmes.
The romance! Kerry and Scott are verrry cute.
What I didn't love:
Lack of a definite setting - this book had a combination of American teenage tropes and British-isms, leaving me very confused about where this story was unfolding. Specifically - if this is the UK, I don't believe they have years like "junior" and I don't believe people under 18 can drive; if this is the US, we would call them "towns" not "villages," we call our police officers "Officer [name]" or "Detective [name]" not "DI [name]," and we have the FBI and CIA, not MI5 or MI6.
The title - I would say that there is so much more to this mystery than the fact that the characters are in school. The fact that the title isn't a period pun is a shame.

A truly enjoyable story.
Really this has a little bit of everything.
I thought Murder on a School Night was a great YA rom-com with some mystery and murder.
My favorite type of reads.

Kerry and even Annie are so much fun! I loved their relationship and personalities.
Overall, I don't have one bad or negative thing to say about anything!

This fits right in with the trend of slightly humorous but still incredibly dark mysteries, think along the Finnlay Donovan line. The only oddity that strikes me is the book set in England but a lot of the school terminology and slang still being American. Overall a lovely read!

this was what I was hoping for from a young adult mystery novel, it was what I was hoping for. The story was what I was hoping for and loved trying to solve this mystery going on. I enjoyed the way the characters were written and how they worked in this story. Kate Weston had a great style and was a great mystery novel. I'm excited to read more from the author.

“Are we sure he’s dead though?” Scott says his arm around my waist, holding me up. “This could all be an elaborate joke.” “He’s dead,” I say, watching as the paramedics stop taking his pulse and vital signs. They slide him into a body bag."
