Swimming to Elba is hard to read. The novel is rife with poverty, abuse, sexualization, etc., and it's tough to read/ The writing is compelling enough that I continued to read, but I did so with a knot in the pit of my stomach. From what I understand, the frustrations expressed in this novel are accurate for many Italians, but I don't know enough about it to comment. A good, but hard read.
