"Women of Myth" gives a great introduction to both well-known and lesser-known mythological women from all over the world. I particularly liked the inclusion of the short retelling of each woman's most famous myth.

I love myths and stories from around the world- this book so wonderfully depicts the tales and legends of goddesses and powerful women in stories and also includes absolute gorgeous illustrations as well. A great add to any library!

Women of Myth is an encyclopedia of various goddesses, legends, and monsters from cultures all across the globe. The scope and breadth of this collection is impressive, but it also means that many mythical women are left on the cutting room floor (i.e. don't expect to read about all of the many remarkable goddesses of Mount Olympus). The prose is modern and informal, aiming for a conversational tone with varying degrees of success. The language used will likely turn off a number of people--fans of the book would call it progressive, critics would call it woke. In truth, it's both. Women of Myth explores the hurdles women faced throughout history while also bogging down the text with buzzwords like patriarchy and cisgender. What's perhaps most baffling about this book is that it presents a strange mirror image to the conservatism it condemns: rather than idealize the 1950s, Women of Myth presents a heavily romanticized image of the ancient world: before the colonizers showed up with their crosses and oppression, the world was more fair, kind, and feminist. It's a remarkably ahistorical account of what was a brutal period of history (in every corner of the world), and it's here that the audience has to accept that what they're reading is more pop culture than history.

One aspect of Women of Myth that is beyond reproach, however, are the illustrations. There are over two-dozen gorgeous illustrations of the women profiled here, and for that I would recommend buying the physical copy so that they can be viewed in their full glory.

Thank you Netgalley and Adams Media, for an E-Arc copy of this book. Women of Myth is an encyclopedia filled with a variety of myths spanning from all over the world. Categorized into: Heroines, Monsters, and Goddesses. With beautiful illustrations depicting the women. This book is great for people who want to dive into mythology. With the wide selection, you can pick an array of ethnicities, groups, and nationalities. : Chinese, Inuit, Zulu, Indigenous, Irish, Somali, Hawaiian, Moroccan, and Arapesh. These are just a few to name what’s included, to pique a reader's interest. theres also many stories that include LGBTQIA, many of the women in myth considered themselves nonbinary, trans, etc.

I loved reading this book, and how the women were categorized. It’s easy to narrow down my favorites and where I could find them in the book. Along with the categories, the story of each woman spanned 3-4 pages. So they were short and easy reads that didn’t feel tedious or felt overwhelming. The pronunciations shown for the woman’s names, or their alternative names were helpful. When the reader reaches the end of each story, theres a small box describing a more in-depth look at a goddess’s followers, or bringing awareness to a certain culture, and such. This was a great detail added if readers were curious about other elements in the story. Also (for some of the women) a small description of how they impacted pop culture. Whether it be through video games, books, plays, etc. I think it’s beneficial (to readers like me), who would like recommendations on a particular woman, and learn more about her through those avenues. I really love the diversity of the book. Generally, when it comes to books in mythology it’s always Greek or Norse. But this book has shined a light on the most underrated mythologies, and mythologies I didn’t know existed!

A super well done collection of Women from Myths all around the world! I really enjoyed the little where you can see them in modern adaption references because it's cool to know what caused the inspiration. I also like to overlap between some of the goddesses and monsters i.e. Te fiti and Te Kah who was in both sections. I really hope this group puts together another book because this was a fantastic read with such striking images!

Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review!

Excellent Variety - Limited Information.

Women of myth was written by the creators of The Ancient History Fangirl podcast. Together they drummed up infamous female figures of myth and legend and divided them into three main categories: Goddesses, Heroines, and Villains. I have to admit that I was immediately impressed by the diversity of their selections and how few I had actually heard of. Plus the ART is astounding! Sara Richard did an incredible job dreaming these women onto the page.

However, when push comes to shove, each Woman of Myth read like a condensed Wikipedia page. we get the origin myth, symbology, uses in pop culture, etc. If you are looking for extensive research on women of myth with direct academic source material, this may not be the book for you. If you are looking for interesting stories, cultural diversity, and a jumping-off point then I would absolutely recommend this read.

All-in-all, a book I will continue to revisit, I only wish the formatting had allowed for deeper dives into each. Considering what a large endeavor writing this book in a pandemic world must have been, it is a minor detractor at best.
Fun facts and historical feminism will always draw me in!

A well-curated and well-researched biography of different mythological women all across the world that were deprived of a well-deserving spotlight from lovers of mythologies. This may serve as a cheat sheet for readers who wants to dig deeper into these mythological women that are terrifyingly and maddeningly beautiful and powerful.

I truly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to own my own copy.

There are 50 women of myth featured and divided into the following categories: goddesses, monsters, and heroines. The book also has a pretty decent amount of diversity which I appreciated. I learned so much that I did not know and I can't wait to pick this up again.

I hope there is a second volume featuring more women from other countries/cultures.

Stories of myth and legend have always been a go to for me. And to have this one focusing on women who were imagined to be this intelligent, strong, benevolent, and powerful is fantastic. I enjoyed all the tales written here and the illustrations were coourful and beautiful.

I really enjoyed this book! The cover and title drew me in, as well as the opportunity to learn more about women in mythology. There were so many myths, goddesses, heroines, and monsters I had never heard of before, particularly those of non-western origin, and I think this book was a great way to learn a little bit about them. It's a great reference and a great starting point for learning about mythology from cultures that aren't often portrayed in popular media.

This is a great compilation of women from myths and legends. As the authors mention, Greek mythology is the most commonly known but many other cultures have their own distinct myths and legends. This book highlights some of the women in those myths and legends. From Inuit to Zulu and all other myths in between, it's a compelling highlight of these women and how cultures affected them. I truly enjoyed reading this one.

his book is basically an encyclopedia of mythological women across cultures, with beautiful artwork!

Most people are familiar with Greek mythology alone, but this book dove into worldwide mythological tales. I learned so much and enjoyed every page!

My only real critique is that I wish there was artwork for every excerpt. Not every goddess/heroine/monster in the book was illustrated, so the appearance was left to my imagination, guided by a short description.

Will recommend this book to people who want to broaden their knowledge of mythology!

my thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this digital ARC. This is my honest review.

This is a detailed and diverse compilation of information on a diverse and interesting selection of goddesses, women from folktales, and mythology. I appreciated the way it was organized, the information on pronunciation, and the diversity of the women chosen for this collection. I learned quite a bit and the references allow for further research, which is helpful.

A great and concise compendium of women in myth and folktale. Informative and a great reference book.

Nonfiction book about many different women from myth and folklore throughout multiple cultures. I loved reading about myths that I've never learned about before and the accompanying art work is gorgeous. Unlike many mythology retellings the authors use very contemporary language that would appeal to a younger audience which could introduce them to different cultures. This book would be great for both those who know a lot about myths and folklore and those who don't.

This illustrated book contains the stories of 50 women from mythology. Although identified as "goddesses," some of these figures come from folktales, contemporary legends and literature rather than ancient mythology. Further some characters are enhanced by modern interpretations rather than sticking to the historic texts. Each entry includes pronunciation, appearance, symbols, overview, and what's her story. Resources are included for further reading.

A couple years ago I started revisiting many of the fairy tales and myths I grew up loving, and it has been so fun to read them through the lens of an adult trying to understand where they come from. The magic is still there, but it’s even more meaningful now that I can connect it with real cultures and experiences. Women of Myth is one of my new favorite resources and one I can’t wait to recommend to my creative writing students. One of their projects is rewriting a fairy tale or myth, but first they have to research its origins. I’m eager to see how their stories flourish after reading this.
