Hmmm well this series took a turn. This just wasn’t quite what I was expecting with the lead in from the last book?

I did enjoy the ~historical aspects of this story and seeing the rising tensions in Berlin pre-WWII (though not sure how I feel about Hitler being a character here??? But I will say, his verbal smack down from Sarah was excellent!)

The first 2/3 of this book were really great and quite in line with the rest of the series. But I don’t know, the last third just… fell apart?

It just felt choppy and sometimes I couldn’t even tell what was happening? And I’m still not even clear on the ending. It felt abrupt, left me with a lot of questions and didn’t feel like the fitting end for what had been such a good series. This could’ve used a few more chapters just to wrap things up properly.

I also, once again, had trouble keeping track of characters in this series (there are just so many???) and where we’d seen them before. So the ~Voodoo Child (who was a main character in this story), I spent a great chunk just trying to remember where we’d even met her before.

So. Unfortunately, this book just felt like it was… lacking? The first book in this series was excellent but I don’t think either of the other books managed to ~capture the magic of that first book.

This is a very interesting series though and I am glad I read it. But I just finished this book a little disappointed. It just didn’t feel like what the rest of the series had been building toward. And, for me, the ending was not a satisfying conclusion.

This is a general review of this series and the last two instalments.
This is a series that should be read by a lot of people, anyone who loves noir or historical fiction would be delighted as the details of things and the vivid historical background are well researched and vivid.
The plots are tightly knitted, gripping and you cannot stop reading.

In book three of the series Beau is working for Shelby as she and Zola head off to Germany as Hitler is coming into his own. A young woman is befriended, Hitler is met, and I skimmed the rest as I found myself not interested enough to find out more than that they were alive at the end of the book. DNF for this one though I had high hopes for the series.

The Voodoo Child is an American young woman performing on stage in Germany. She is beautiful and everyone wants her Shelby Prevettee and her cousin, Zola, befriend her. They are in Berlin with Sarah Remley, an artist, and Beau LaHood, ex-Pullman Porter. It is winter of 1926 and Hitler is on the rise. He and the DNF are trying to obtain guns on the freighter, Pegasus. The ending is abrupt so I hope there will be a fourth book.

The book has a steady pace, the characters are developed, and it is written in third person. There are derogatory remarks about Blacks and Jews because of the times. The ending is confusing for me. I honestly do not know what happened. I liked the first two books in the series more than this. For me, it was too choppy with action jumping all over the place from one character to another quickly.

It was the cover design of this book that caught my eye.

I wasn't sure what to make of the story itself. At first it seemed like an interesting piece of historical fiction, and I found parts of it humorous and entertaining. However, as I read on, other parts of the story seemed odd, and there was some profanity that I felt was unnecessary.

I so didnt want this series to end. Part of me hopes more will come but I'm unsure. Blurb caught my eye. 5 star book. Will be keeping an eye on this series because I abostly loved it. Kept me pulled into couldn't put it down. Already told people that they need this series because I highly recommend it
