I really enjoyed this book, I liked the main characters, Eve and Jonah, and this rather unique spin on a typical tale. Tj\he husband disappears, mysteriously and the wife is the is first suspect, of course. She is special, a different kind of scientist which is a nice change of pace. She has a certain way about how she does things, clean and clinical. She there is no explanation and the man who comes to her couldn't be more different.
He is seeking his own missing person-
The story moves quickly between science and non science. The ending is fine, ok. Getting to it was fun.
While many elements of this story follow a typical pattern, no spoilers here, it was a delight to read. 4.5 stars

Who do you turn to when the person you’ve built your life with goes missing?

Dr. Eve Roth works for the University of Iowa as a physicist studying weather, a career path she chose because of a tornado that upended her childhood. She’s married to another professor, Matthew, & her father-in-law, Earl, now lives with them since he suffered a stroke not long after he lost his wife. When Eve’s husband goes missing & his Tesla is found burning in the rain, she & Earl go through the proper channels with the police department where they meet an investigator by the name of Max.

Max has just recently returned to duty at the Iowa City Police Department after being shot while doing unofficial investigative inquiries with his college roommate & psychic friend, Jonah. Jonah happens to be at the ICPD when Eve & Earl come in to answer questions regarding Matthew’s disappearance, & Jonah realizes that his most recent dream was of Matthew. He follows Eve & Earl home & after a rough start Eve reluctantly decides to team up with Jonah in order to find Matthew. Jonah believes that if he can find Matthew then he’ll also find answers regarding a missing woman he’s been trying to find for four months.

The combination of practical scientist & psychic shouldn’t work, but somehow it does! Eve & Jonah are a winning combination, & I love how their professions complement each other as they track down people & evidence in the hunt for the missing. I also really enjoyed Eve’s loyalty to her father-in-law in the face of some disturbing revelations about her husband.

As an Iowa native, this book was even more special to me because it was a thriller (probably my favorite genre) set in my home state! It was so fun to see mentions of places I know & things I’m familiar with, & even though my husband didn’t MAKE the sapphire on my ring, I thought it was cool that Dr. Eve & I had that in common.

So excited that this is the start of a series because I definitely want to read more about Dr. Eve & Jonah & Earl!

Eve is a well known and respected physicist. She and her stroke affected father in law get a call regarding her husband. His car has been set on fire and he is missing. Meanwhile an extremely empathetic private eye and his best friend cop have been trying to find the pi’s missing niece. This is the story of how their lives become intertwined. The main character is a strong intelligent woman whose motivations make sense but whose actions are somewhat far fetched. I found the descriptions of the PI’s mental episodes confusing and tense but perhaps that’s intentional. That said, I found this book really interesting and engrossing. In fact I read it in one day.

To Catch a Storm is the first book in a new series by Mindy Mejia. Eve Roth started to investigate the death of her husband after being notified by the law enforcement investigation that she was the prime suspect in her husband's death. During an ice storm in Iowa, Eve Roth became involved with psychic Jonah Kendrick, who believed someone killed Eva's husband. Jonah and Eve decided to join forces to find the killer. The readers of To Catch a Storm will continue to follow Jonah and Eva to discover what happens.

To Catch a Storm is the first book I have read by Mindy Mejia, and I did enjoy reading this book. I engaged with this book's story and plot from the first page. I like Mindy Mejia's writing style and how she portrayed her characters and their interaction with each other throughout this book. To Catch a Storm is well-written and researched by Mindy Mejia. I like Mindy Mejia's description of the settings of To Catch a Storm.

The readers of To Catch a Storm will learn about the roles of a Physicist. Also, To Catch a Storm, readers will understand the role of a psychic in a law enforcement investigation.

I recommend this book.

I'm glad I didn't read the summary beforehand. I simply requested it based on that awesome cover and Mindy's name recognition. The book was so surprising. I loved how Mejia told the stories of two super distinct characters, a psychic kid and a scientist woman. Two characters who couldn't be more different. It was an incredibly unique pairing, and of course, Mejia did her research. I found the science stuff as equally fascinating as the plot. Unique story that mystery fans will love.

I could not get into this book and unfortunately had to DNF. From what I read, the book was very well written. The story line was promising; I just couldn't get into it. If you are into crime stories with twists and turns, and psychic investigators, then I highly recommend you give this one a chance. I hope to read more from this author in the future!

To Catch a Storm is a wonderful blend of science and the supernatural – physics and psychics specifically – with pulse-pounding action and twists upon twists that will have readers gasping while grasping for answers.

Eve Roth is the prime suspect in the disappearance of her husband Matthew, with the police assuming the motive is tied to his suspension from the University of Iowa due to inappropriate conduct with a female student. However, Eve is as flummoxed as the police as to where Matthew might have gone. And since law enforcement seem to have tunnel vision, she decides to conduct her own investigation. Meanwhile, Jonah Kendrick has had another one of his visions, this time about Matthew being held in a barn somewhere in Iowa. And he feels strongly this is tied to another disappearance he’s been frantic to solve. So he approaches Eve to team up. But Eve is an academic whose whole life revolves around the scientific method and doesn’t buy into Jonah’s so-called psychic abilities. However, desperate times lead to desperate measures, and they use their individual strengths and abilities to work together. But what they find is bigger than anything they could have expected and puts them in harms way from some serious individuals. Armed with little more than their mental abilities, they will have to outwit their opponents before they end up the next victims of this ruthless organization.

The juxtaposition of a brilliant science academic partnering with a neurotic socially awkward psychic works incredibly well, especially by giving these two characters a common bond via searching for loved ones who have gone missing. It results in completely different approaches and perspectives that allow for a 1+1=3 scenario with the pairing being greater than the individuals themselves. Furthermore, it provides a valuable reminder that keeping an open mind, thinking critically, leaving your comfort zone, and embracing diversity of thought can yield tremendous results. A lesson we can all learn from while being thoroughly entertained and engrossed in this exciting story.

And if that’s not enough on its own, To Catch a Storm has great pacing with constantly increasing intensity and desperation leaking off every page. Readers will feel for Eve and Jonah, make a connection with them through their traumatic experiences, and urge them forward despite the long odds of success. Because any resolution to the pain they’ve experienced will allow them to move forward. Unless they end up dead because they bit off more than they can chew. Which would certainly be a huge bummer.

I’m so glad Mindy Mejia is back with a new book in 2023. It’s been 3 years since her last published novel (Strike Me Down, which is also fantastic), and while the wait was long it was certainly worth it. Because the Thriller-verse is much better off when Mindy Mejia releases another compelling novel.

Thank you Netgalley /Arc for a an advance copy for my honest opinion.

I forgot the actress that coined the phrase " its going to be a bumpy ride."

Action packed thriller!!!

I really thought this was not going to be good fit for me. Boy was I wrong. Science vs. Psychic what a strange combination, oh but the way the author wrote this story---- perfect combination. You get murder and mayhem, can you keep up? The way this story is written, yes you can. The story flows, but there was are many twist and turns to keep this thriller- edge of your seat worthy.

I highly recommend this book for all my thriller reader junkies.

I've loved Mindy Mejia's previous crime thrillers, otherwise I'm not sure whether I would have picked up a "psychic detective" novel. Most crime fiction requires a good amount of suspension of disbelief so the psychic aspect wasn't really a problem. It was well handled by the author and balanced by plenty of good solid science from Eve, an atmospheric physicist.
Eve is a great character with her data and logic and her feisty refusal to back away from danger in the pursuit of the truth about her missing husband while also dragging along her wheelchair bound father-in-law. The plot cracks along at a great pace with twists you won't see coming. I'm looking forward to Mejia's next novel.
My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.

When I first read the description of this book, I was concerned I wouldn't enjoy it because a Physicist seems like an unlikely hero in a suspense novel. I am glad I did read this book because it was amazing! Eve needs to find her husband, even it that means teaming up with a psychic and her disabled father-in-law and traveling through a terrible winter storm. The twists and turns (some quite literally) throughout this book make it a very entertaining story.

Atmospheric physicist, Eve Roth's, husband is missing. His car was found burning in the middle of a December rainstorm and she is the prime suspect in his disappearance. Psychic detective, Jonah Kendrick, appears on Eve's doorstep stating that he knows where her husband is and it's connected to a case he's working. Desperate to find those they have lost, Jonah and Eve team up they must race against a freezing storm covering the state before it's too late.

To Catch a Storm is a new thriller by author Mindy Mejia that involves an unusual unit of a psychic, a scientist, and the disabled father of Eve's missing husband. The beginning of this novel really drew me in as we join Eve high above the earth tracking storm data. It gets more interesting when she teams up with an unusual psychic who claims to be able to locate her missing husband. As action-packed as this novel is, consistently shifting between perspectives of different characters, it just didn't hold my attention. Maybe it was just too much as I felt like I was continually being pulled in different directions as the plot continually changed course. As enjoyable as this novel was, I think other readers will probably find it a bit more entertaining than I did. I wanted to love it but it just wasn't a good fit for me.

Physicist meets psychic and all holy hell breaks loose!
This new thriller by the one of the best thriller authors out there begins with two missing people in the midst of an ice storm.
Main character/suspect #1- Eve Roth- spouse/physicist is under suspicion for the disappearance of Matthew Moore her husband. It appears his car was found engulfed in flames and abandoned. Past reports indicate he's been suspended for inappropriate conduct with a student.
Bring in #2 character - Jonah Kendrick - Psychic and Uncle who is determined to find answers from beyond the grave if he must.
Just think a psychic and a physicist exploding into action to form a team .
However, this isn't child's play and this ain't the first rodeo for Mejia! She brings the suspense, the engagement, she put you front and center of it all!!
Let's cut to the chase...There may be something behind the scenes here. You might say to look under the floorboards, behind every barn, and hell look out in the labs because there's something brewing.
Don't you remember that lava experiment...from science class...pop, fiz, bubble over.
What we have here is some interconnected workings on the part of some shady folks.
Shoot, there's affairs, car accidents, murders, mayhem, drug action, and more.
In fact, in order to make money you have to put money into that pot -sorta speak, right?
I'll tell you what I think for the two cents it's worth. Do me a favor, stop what you're doing, and add this to your TBR in whatever format you choose.
Because we may have started with two missing but if my memory serves me right we have at least 3 dead!
This was a book that I won't soon forget because the twisty vibes ran through this like a damn freight train off the tracks!
Thank you to Mindy Mejia, Grove Atlantic, Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.
To Catch A Storm is due out in the USA: August 1st 2023

Wonderful thriller! The author does a wonderful job of establishing a number of characters. The story is packed with twists and turns making it difficult to assume what is around the next corner. I think this great story would even keep a psychic guessing.

I absolutely loved this book! I’m a big science nut so the science-y stuff was right up my alley! If you’re not into science, action, or thrillers this probably wouldn’t be the book for you. But if you are, hang on for a wild ride! This book went in a direction I absolutely didn’t expect, and I have to admit I was floored when I found out who the big bad guy was. And that doesn’t happen often. Really well written and entertaining from the get go! You should definitely read this!

Huge thanks to Grove Atlantic and Netgalley for sending me this ARC for review! All of my reviews are given honestly!

Interesting Blend Of Real-World Physics And Paranormal Into Top-Notch Action Thriller. Sexton... you're doing it again. You just said this book was a "top notch action thriller", yet it is set in the *midwest*. What are you smoking, and can I get some? Why yes, yes I did say that - and I mean it. The tale opens with an all-consuming fire... in the middle of a torrential rain. As we get the perspectives of about a half dozen or so different characters, we find that one of them somehow has psychic abilities. When the scientist and the psychic meet... things get rather interesting and the tale becomes rather twisty yet also very down to earth and relatable. The ending itself is almost Christopher Nolan-esque in how mind-bending it is, and some of the scenes getting us there are edge of your seat thrill rides. Overall an intriguing series starter, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing where Mejia takes this. Very much recommended.
