Detective Inspector Jemima Huxley has mixed feelings about leaving the unexpected bliss of maternity leave to return to her high risk job at the police station in South Wales. Little does she know, this is about to be one of the longest days of her career.

The Marquees Club Killings is the fifth 5th book in the series. The author provides just enough information to help you to follow along, without giving everything away. I would definitely read the first four to get all the gritty details!

To start, let’s talk about the prologue 🤯
This had me hooked! It was one of the best I’ve read in ages. Unfortunately, the pace slowed down and didn’t really pick up again until about 100 pages in.

This was a dark British Procedural filled with kidnapping, murder, and police corruption. Lots of twists and shocking moments.
🚨 Trigger warnings also include topics of rape, child abuse and exploitation. Some scenes were very difficult for me to read.

DI Jemima Huxley is an intriguing protagonist with a traumatic past. She has close relationships with her team, and there are some really likeable characters in this book. However, this entire story takes place in just one day, there was limited character development. I’m guessing this happened during the first four books, so that’s on me!

The dialogue was smooth and I can just imagine that this would be a great TV series. I was excited to read a book set in Wales, a beautiful country that has a special place in my heart 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿💚 I just wish the setting and local dialect was more prominent in the story!

What a ride! Really enjoyed the plot, the characters, the relationships between the characters, as well as the pace of the book. Pretty much a perfect package! This is the first book I have read written by Gaynor Torrance, but it will not be the last one.

I could not stop reading the book, so I finished reading it in two sittings. It was most definitely worth the read. I absolutely love how the words were flowing on the pages like a river where the water keeps on moving over sticks and stones, and pushes through every obstacle until the river runs into the ocean. One case is closed, but the ocean is deep and large.

I highly recommend this book!

Plethora Of Problems…
The fifth in the DI Jemima Huxley crime series finds Jemima returning to a plethora of problems, following maternity leave. Chaos is about to be unleashed. Is Jemima ready? Several strands successfully merge in this pacy, unexpected, sometimes shocking and well written suspense with a cast of deftly crafted and credible characters.

This my first read of Gaynor Torrence, The Marquess Club Killings being the fifth in a series. There are some obvious references back to previous books, but they give enough information that you can read this without reading the previous ones.

I really enjoyed Torrence's style of writing and there were some funny bits that made me chuckle to myself. There were plenty of plot twists and surprises to keep you entertained.

Overall and enjoyable read.

On Jemima’s first day back after a year’s maternity leave she is asked to investigate the suspected abduction of High Court Judge Rory Lawson. Then a bound and gagged body is found, one which has unexpected links to the judge. Time is now of the essence if she and her team are to find the judge alive.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Marquess Club Killings, which is a high octane, wild ride of a novel that takes some unexpected turns. It should be noted that the novel has some explicit themes that are difficult to read.

I’m not quite sure where to begin with the novel. It’s event filled from the start with two kidnappings, but the investigation itself is initially quite slow, because where do they start investigating people with a grudge against a judge? Some smart thinking and logical links get them on the right track to discovering his secrets and then it gets really wild. I’m not going to get into the detail but the events are numerous and jaw dropping. It’s safe to say that I never saw any of it coming and was glued to the pages, wondering what would come next and how it would all play out. Full marks to the author for her imagination in putting this together and for her skill in taking one crime and turning it in to so much more.

I like Jemima Huxley. She has had an eventful life and now that she has found joy in her family I can empathise with her regret at having to return to work. Still, once she’s there she’s fit for any nonsense from witnesses, suspects or other officers. I loved her showdown with the Deputy Chief Constable, where she wiped the floor with him.

The Marquess Club Killings is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

DI Jemima Huxley has finished her year's maternity leave and has very mixed feelings about returning to work, especially as her husband has walked out leaving behind his young son from a first marriage and the new baby being the result of an horrendous rape. Jemima is strong, loves both children as well as her work. First day back is a real doozie though - high court judge goes missing, motor vehicle chase goes wrong and a young man is flung from the boot then run over by another vehicle. She and her team follow a lot of dead ends, there are strong indications of wrong'uns in the police and she and her team are threatened off. Bad idea. They continue with the pink fluffy-slippered Eileen and bring the cases to a satisfying end. Tense, annoying at times, heart feeling, horror, companionship and support - they are all there. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.

This is a fast paced mystery with a lot of twists and surprises! You think it will start slow as Jemima returns to work from maternity leave, but she hits the ground running and the pace gets jacked-up with each chapter. The characters are so real, and the situations are so well described. The twists will have you questioning who the real victim is, what the actual crime was, and hoping to change the course of the investigation. This was a story hard to put down once started! Excellent storytelling!

The Marquess Club Killings is the fifth in the engrossing DI Jemima Huxley Thrillers series. Inspector Jemima Huxley is filled with dread with returning to work after being off on maternity leave. She is also raising her ex's son James and together the boys are her world. Her job as an investigator is stressful and exhausting but she must return as money is very tight and investigating is what she knows. Her first day back is a zinger as Jemima and her team are thrust into two fascinating cases, one is the kidnapping of a judge and the second is the discovery of a bound and gagged body. Thank goodness Jemima's sister is supportive...without her life would be very different. Jemima shines at finding out what makes criminals tick and therefore controls the psychological side of things. Work changes are in the works as well. That prologue! Loved it.

Author Gaynor Torrance writes with a brisk and sharp pace and injects interesting tidbits about family drama into the twisty story. Jemima's cases are not the only challenges on her plate. Crime Thriller readers, do take note of this series!

Two people are abducted. One dies in an accident. The other is Important - to public perception anyway. D I Jemima Huxley, on her first day back from maternity leave, is given the job of finding him - like straight away. Is there a link? Was she right to come back to work leaving her baby and stepson? Only time will tell.

Very different. Loved it.

I have not read the previous three books in the series, a problem which I plan on remedying at the earliest possible opportunity - but I feel that there was enough 'history' given in the course of the book that it worked well as a standalone.
DI Huxley is coming back to work after a year's maternity leave - and having many qualms. But she's catapulted back into the thick of things with the apparent kidnapping of a judge, for no obvious reason.
As the team digs further and further into the judge, they begin to uncover secrets that have remained hidden for decades; and at the same time, another kidnapping - which unfortunately ended in death - seems to be linked to the judge's - but how?
Not only does the team uncover the motive behind the kidnappings, but they also uncover corruption close to home.
A truly suspenseful entry in the series.

Book 5 in the Jemima Huxley series has her returning to work from maternity leave. She hits the ground running as a High Court judge disappears, presumably abducted, and a body is found on a motorway. This is a well written book with clever plotting, plenty of action and believable characters. The subject nature of sexual abuse is handled with sensitivity, compassion and tact. An excellent police procedural which fans of the genre will enjoy. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey with Jemima and her team and look forward to the next installment. What's the gem !!! Fantastic book of crime mystery. All the characters are three-dimensional, and it was hard to stop reading due to so many twists. A fantastic style of writing. I'm a new fan of Gaynor Torrance 'killings'.
O would like to see a movie based on this book!! Only 5 stars because I cannot give ten.

The Marquess Club Killings by Gaynor Torrance is a Jemima Huxley Crime Thriller Book 5. The cover art is very cool and what drew me into the book at first glance.

It might have been good to read the previous books to get the characters' backgrounds, what happened in other books, and how the relationships were formed.

It’s Jemima Huxley’s first day back at work after maternity leave. It was always going to be heart-wrenching leaving baby Finlay, but things are already going wrong.

While I really enjoyed getting to know the characters, it was slow going getting to the action. Too much time was spent on non-involved culprits, and I felt some scenes and chapters could have been cut. The story was okay and kind of cliche, but the characters and atmosphere of the setting made it an enjoyable read.

I rate this a 3.5 out of 5 stars (rounded to 4) as it was slow in parts and took some time to get to the heart of the action.

Great book! This book had a bit of everything! It had suspense, intrigue, action, murder, mystery, human trafficking, bad cops, good cops, and plenty of crazy twists and turns and a great who done it! The storyline was very interesting and had me glued to my Kindle! I highly recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading!
