My thanks to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing Uk for a copy of “ Let Me In “ for an honest review.

As a longtime reader of Claire McGowan I know I’m in for a treat when I get the chance to read her new book release. This was of the same high standard as all her previous work , with well written characters and an intriguing, storyline ,this time set around witchcraft and secrets This had me gripped right from the start.and I found it hard to put down.
Told from different characters points of view , I thought it was very cleverly written and I’ll definitely add it to my list of recommended reads

Great thriller.George and Helen move from London to an old house in the country for a fresh start. The house has been abandoned for years. When they arrive Helen gets eerie vibes immediately. The village locals are less than welcoming and as renovations begin, strange objects are found buried in the yard and in the walls. Helen tried to find out what has went on in the house she now lives in and what is happening now. Great thriller.

Fantastic book which I raced through could not put it down. Will be recommending this to anyone who loves a book with lots of suspense.

Helen and George are looking to escape London for a calmer life post-COVID and move to a small town in Cornwall. What follows is far from the restful life they expected. A witch, a couple of murders, and so many secrets. What's not to like?

Ugh, the dumb smart woman strikes again.

Helen is an employed Doctor with a deadbeat husband named George (aspiring writer, entitled and selfish). She is burnt out after Covid and allows George to pick out a house that they will move to for a fresh start, depleting their entire savings in the process. Neither employed at this point and the location rather desolate with limited employment opportunities. Who does that? In the real world?

I liked this story, don’t get me wrong. It had an interesting premise and creepy vibe. I liked how the narrators fleshed out the story slowly and provided some good twists along the way. I really like character Janna and her sections. The ending was satisfying but the final chapter by Margaret was quite sad and dark.

Overall, it was entertaining and I was compelled to see how it wrapped up. I do like this author’s works and will look forward to the next one. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Amazon Publishing UK/Thomas & Mercer for a copy in exchange for a review.

This is a renovation story with a dark difference. Helen and George are hoping for a new start when they move to remote Cornwall (we do mean ‘remote’) and being fixing and upping their much in need of repair fixer-upper. However, there’s something unsettling about the process, the location and the feeling Helen has that she’s been there before. As the renovation continues, the builders are less than pleased to be there, finding dolls hidden in walls and getting injured all over the place. Helen feels obliged to look into the location’s past – what will she make of the news that the previous owner not only was rumoured to be a witch, but was imprisoned for multiple murders 30 years earlier? George too has his own issues, however, he prefers – perhaps understandably – to keep them from his wife. The book twists and turns as husband and wife realise they can barely trust each other, let alone anyone they met around their new home. Suddenly, the dream life has become a nightmare…

I'll happily split this book into thirds.
First third I knew wasn't going to go well, when someone let's their hopeless husband buy a house without even looking at the details or location.
That pushes believability boundaries for me.
Also, the first third had too much George, who had no redeeming qualities that I could see.

Second part, set in the 80's was my favourite.
We got a real look at the victim, and the murderer, and saw how the whole story started. And then ended.

Last third was good, just not as good as the middle bit.
There were a few surprises along the way, that left me, well, surprised.

A good few hours entertainment for me.

I REALLY wanted to like this book. It seemed so promising with the spooky house and the domestic tensions but it was a real hit and miss for me. The tension is lost in all the unnecessary details about everyone and everything. I wanted suspense building- not a snooze fest. And I got so annoyed at this so called modern relationship, where the wife is a hard working nurse on the brink of total exhaustion after coronavirus but is left with all the housework and packing up at the new house wile hubby is in a ”creative zone”. Barf! My annoyance level is so peaked I could not read it in the evenings.

So. That is my honest review. Sorry.

Wow! Really enjoyed this thriller by Claire McGowan! Will definitely be following her. This was dark and witchy, a perfect blend. Characters were full on. It’s a complex story but told with startling clarity and precision. My mind was racing (to the wrong conclusions) through the entire book.
So creepy and I loved it.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book

I've enjoyed most of the author's previous thrillers and Let Me In did not disappoint.
When Helen and George leave London for a new life in a remote house in Cornwall, Helen feels uneasy from the beginning. The house needs extensive updating, strange objects are unearthed during the renovation and Helen has a sense that the house is familiar to her. She begins to investigate the history of the house and uncovers secrets about her own past. The novel is told from the points of view of Helen, George and Jenna, the latter a convicted murderer who is being paroled.
There seem to be a few recent novels on a similar theme but Let Me In still manages to be original and completely gripping. It's an atmospheric and twisty read, there is a creepy vibe throughout the novel and I was completely immersed in the history that is slowly revealed by the three narrators. Recommended.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.

I liked the witchy aspects to this book. It was kind of predictable though. Some twists and turns but in the end it was what I suspected in the beginning and was an abrupt end that I didn’t feel had a great resolution. I’d read more by this author, though.

Thank you Thomas & Mercer for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Tbh, this was a Honda Civic Reliable three-stars until the last quarter of the book. Then it crumbled like feta cheese. Idk what happened.

I loved how the book twists and turns so much, and the story was fascinating. The characters and the building of the story was wonderful. But, the pacing was the one thing that let it down for me. It wasn’t overly slow, but the layout of the chapters was a little confusing. Although it did work fairly well for the story, I would’ve prefer more of a breakdown of chapters. Still a wonderful book!

Let Me In
By Claire McGowan
Publication date 20 June 2023

This was an average read for me. Unfortunately, I found the plot twists to be either predictable or nonsensical.

My appreciation goes to @netgalley for providing me with this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Helen and George find themselves in an old house in Cornwall - they are going to fix it up and are hopeful for the future. However, bizarre things start happening, and memories of the past are resurfacing. They are both keeping secrets from each other while at the same time learning about terrible events of their pasts. Helen and George set out to uncover the truth of the past and what that means for the present.

I found the first couple of chapters from Helen and George's perspective confusing. They are married yet seem to know nothing about each other. Also far-fetched is that George chooses the house in Cornwall and Helen uproots everything to move to a house she knows nothing about (including how it was paid for). This feels bizarre in itself and then more implausible situations and secrets keep coming- they know nothing about each other and it made it hard to relate to them, as I felt I knew nothing about them as well.

The chapter from Janna's point of view held my attention and is the reason I gave this book 3 stars instead of 2. This chapter was interesting and engaging- Janna was well-developed and captivating. I really enjoyed this chapter's depth and suspense.

The remainder of the book had some implausible situations happening, and the "reveal" fell a bit flat.

Overall, I just didn't find the language created any kind of eerie feel or scary vibe. Readers find out the truth from the middle of the book so there is no "thrill" factor either.

Having said all that I would certainly try another book from this bestselling author as I know many who love her books and it could just be that this one wasn't for me.

Full of sinister twists! Let Me In by Claire McGowan ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Clueless about the history of the house they’ve just purchased, Helen and George begin renovating a remote Cornwall fixer-upper. After finding old dolls hidden in the walls, Helen discovers a murderer rumoured to be a witch lived here before – and history might just repeat itself…

Having read What You Did and The Other Wife before, I did not expect the plot to be as eerie and bordering on paranormal. While far from my typical read, Let Me In was fun enough to follow.

➕ Unsettling and extremely atmospheric, Let Me In will be a success for those seeking some late-night thrill.

➕ Vivid descriptions made for an enjoyable read that transported me to Cornwall with ease.

➖ While full of action, the plot turned from plausible to increasingly unbelievable.

💭 Is it worth a read? Yes 🙌

Okay I absolutely love everything this author writes, and this book was definitely no exception! I loved it!

This was an awesome book involving murder, poison, and family secrets so how can you not love that? Helen and George have moved to Cornwall and begun renovations on a very old house. But from the moment they begin, there’s trouble. Oh, there are the usual careless builders who break things, show up early without warning, etc. But then they find a doll hidden in the wall, strange jars buried in the yard, and other creepy discoveries about the place. Soon after there’s an accident with one of the workers, and Helen’s about ready to leave. But George has a secret about this house and he can’t leave, yet. He has work to do.

After Helen is practically given the cold shoulder in town and heard strange references to her property, she begins to look into its history. And almost wishes she had not. There’s a reason (if you can call it that) why there are such disturbing items in the house and why people are wary of the place – it belonged to a murderer! A witch sliced her victim’s throat in the forest and somehow simultaneously murdered two girls miles away. Now Helen really freaks out and is determined to get out of that house.

But then the author throws the reader for a loop when the narrative shifts to another point of view. I don’t want to give it away, and we do see from the perspective of multiple people, but this one turns the story upside down! At this point, I just couldn’t put the book down and I had to finish and find out how in the world it was going to end. And what an ending! Characters you thought you understood aren’t at all what they seem. Justice is served, and lost loves are reunited, I mean, does it get any better than that?!

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

Helen and George are a married couple who have upped sticks and moved from London to Cornwall. They’ve purchased a large house, which needs some work doing, and is the home of a former murderer. Helen and George both have secrets, and as we read from each other’s point of view, those secrets become clear.

The story was well written, and the descriptions used for the house gave it that creepy, dark, and gothic feel. Adding to the building tension that is weaved throughout, the characters were well written, and both have flaws, making them relatable to a degree. There were many twists and turns throughout, and you often think you’ve figured it out, but along comes another twist that blows your own theories out the water. A great read.
