I received an ARC of this debut novel by Melissa Adelman through NetGalley.

This is an engaging murder mystery, set in a tony, exclusive suburban neighborhood. All the neighbors know each other and do things (so to speak) with each other, not limited to neighborhood parties. Shortly after a new couple (Sam and Alexis) move into the neighborhood, a man across the street was attacked and killed while on his morning run. Who did it? Why? Will authorities be able to figure it out?

The murder takes place early in the book and the author then develops many characters in the neighborhood and they are a pretty wild and often troubled bunch. At times, the reader might be tempted to conclude that a number of them could have been the murderer.

This is a well-written and entertaining book, fast-paced and fairly plausible. I enjoyed: 4 stars.

Alexis and Sam have found a house in an affluent neighborhood and place an offer right away, even though it needs a ton of work, and the mortgage is going to leave them strapped. They just feel lucky to have found a house they can afford in the perfect neighborhood. Though they soon find out that an address doesn't guarantee safety.
I really liked the story line, and the female bonding. The ending was fitting to the story, and I found it believable. It also completely left room for a sequel, which I would definitely read. There were a lot of characters, and not one of them was likeable.
Entertaining read for fans of mystery and suspense.
Thank you to NetGalley and St Martins Press for sending this advanced digital copy for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

I found the book to be a bit slow for me. Certain areas dragged on. The last bit of the book took an interesting twist. The characters weren’t very likable, which I think was the point of the book. The main character Alexis whined a lot. I didn’t like Blair at all. I really did like the end of the book though. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

I love me a good murder mystery set in an exclusive and well-to-do community, and this novel fits it to a tee! The characters are as rich and bitchy as we all love to hate, plus you have to keep turning the pages to get to the best bits!
Highly recommend this book to all “rich people behaving badly” lovers out there.

Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this read. I started this book and thought it was going to be pretty good. At the start, it was felt quite detailed but I looked at it as letting the reader in on what is going on. But as I read on, I noticed that the book was just so slow and full of fillers. I had to say...what genre is this? Maybe it is just me. The book was way to slow. I know it is labeled at General fiction but it has a thriller element to it and it just was not interesting to me. I almost DNF'd it at the start but I came back to NetGaley and I noticed the reviews a that time were pretty strong, so I kept reading. It was not a good fit for me.

Alexis and Sam move into an upscale neighborhood, but their house is old and in need of greater and more expensive renovations than anticipated. This quickly becomes a source of conflict, especially as Sam is working long hours to make partner at his law firm and not paying enough attention to the house or their young children. Alexis is on maternity leave following the birth of their second child and is home all day with the children and live-in nanny.

Alexis and Sam quickly realize this neighborhood is not as idyllic as they thought. A few months after they move in, one of the neighbors, Teddy, is murdered on the trail near their homes. Being home all the time also results in Alexis seeing strange things in the neighborhood. As she gets to know some of the neighbors, especially Teddy's widow, Blair, Alexis discovers the families on this street have lots of secrets, and their lives are as messy as those of Alexis and Sam.

The story has some really good and unexpected twists, especially the identify of Teddy's killer and the motive for the murder.

Sam and Alexis are a young couple with a small child and another one on the way. They have been house hunting and come across an old home in what they consider to be the perfect neighborhood. The house is not in good shape and will need at lot of work, but they love the idea of living in a desired neighborhood- where all the successful, wealthy people live. The house needs more work than they even realized, causing more and more tension between them. We also see the “ideal” neighborhood may not be all they thought it would be. Not all the neighbors seem genuinely happy to welcome them and then one of the neighbors is found dead! We are told the story from two points of view - Alexis and Blair. We meet a lot of the neighbors throughout and many have shady stories and strange behaviors. The question is - is there a killer among them?

The story moves along fairly well. I found it difficult to really care too much about the characters. Besides Alexis, we really didn’t get enough depth on them, and even with Alexis, I felt there was so much more to build on.

Overall, I liked the book but I didn’t love it. I would rate it 3.5 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book completely hooked me from beginning to end. I had to have all the answers so I could not stop reading. This was so so well written in my opinion, the back and forth POVs from Alexis and Blair was the perfect way to narrate this story.

Alexis and Sam have just moved into a new home in a fancier neighborhood. The downside being that their new home needs extensive renovations, and they really don’t have the means to afford it, causing a strain on their relationship. Then we meet the neighbors who seem cordial, maybe even a bit strange, but nice enough. However, when one of them is murdered the neighbors start to seem more and more questionable.

The way these characters are written everyone seems suspicious and somehow not suspicious at the same time. It’s the perfect way to keep you guessing for the entire story. Sam’s character pissed me off, I felt bad for Alexis, I couldn’t decide if I liked Blair or not (until the end of the book), Laura and Shawn seemed secretive, Mack was creepy, Emily and Dylan, along with Jennifer and Jeff, seemed inauthentic. The neighbors all seemed to be close friends, but disliked each other behind closed doors. It just made the entire reading experience so much more enjoyable with the way these characters were written, it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

When I got to the end of the book I wasn’t sure what I was expecting the answers to be, but I can definitely say I wasn’t expecting what I read. It was definitely one of the best plot twists I’ve ever read. I would highly recommend picking up this book when it releases!

Huge thank you to St. Martin’s Press for proving me with this ARC via NetGalley!

Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the copy of What The Neighbours Saw, the debut novel by Melissa Adelman. Alexis and her husband Sam move into a fixer upper in an exclusive neighborhood. A neighbor is murdered and suddenly Alexis starts to learn the secrets her neighbors are hiding.
I didn’t like or relate to any of the characters and it felt like there were so many I didn’t really get to know them. There were so many different things going on it felt like there was fodder for three different books! Culling it down would have made the story move faster and would have allowed for a deeper dive into the main story. And the main story was a doozy, unlike anything I have ever read! Kudos to the author for coming up with a unique idea. The writing kept me reading until the end and I am going to check out other books by Adelman because this one had so much promise. If you’re looking for a fast-paced book through and through, this one might start too leisurely for you. Stay with it because the ending is worth the read! 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Immensely enjoyed this book. The dual POV alternating chapters was effective and each woman had a very distinct voice. The supporting cast of characters were given enough personality that they didn’t feel like props. Lots of twists and turns and all the plot threads tie up neatly in the end without feeling contrived.

Well written and kept my attention all the way.
Intense thriller in wealthy suburban neighborhood. Plot was a bit familiar, but characters were fabulous. Plot moved a bit slow for me, but so glad I finished it

I was very excited to read and review this book when the publisher, St. Martin's Press, reached out to me. I am a sucker for neighborhood drama with a secret killer. Melissa Aldeman's writing is very easy to follow and it was a quick read for me. This story contained a dual POV between Alexis and Blair who are neighbors turned friends. I always enjoy multiple POVs, especially in thrillers. I think this story line was good, but just good. The set up had great potential but then from 20% through 90% of the story, nothing happened. The last 10% everything fell into place but for the 70% in between I was just reading to get to the end. I wish there were a few more plot twists that happened before finding out what really happened to Blair's husband. This is also a nit-picky thing for me but I do not think I would classify this as a thriller, more a fiction novel with a murder. I would still recommend this book to a friend if this is the type of trope they enjoy. If you like Shari Lapen's novels, I think you would like this book.

When someone from St. Martin's reached out to me about doing a review, I wasn't sure what to expect.
What the Neighbors Saw is an intense thriller, based in a wealthy suburban neighborhood.
Alexis is determined to buy the house on Shadow Rd, knowing that it was in need of repairs, and would put a financial strain on her and her husband, Sam.
Fast forward to moving day, as Alexis, while pregnant and with a toddler, is trying to appease Sam, who in my opinion is a loser from the get go.
Alexis befriends Blair, a neighbor, and soon after odd things begin happening, neighbors openly gossip about each other, and then a sudden death shakes them up.

This story has a lot going on, and while some parts moved slowly, overall I think it's a fantastic book.
It's one I'd read a few times, because there's always a few hints readers miss.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martins for selecting me to read this book.

Unfortunately, I agree with other reviewers who felt this plot was too slow. I love when an author writes unlikeable characters who the reader still feels compelled to follow. However, I couldn't connect with any of the characters or their motivations. This book just ultimately was not a strong fit for me.

Thanks to Netgalley, Melissa Adelman and the publisher for this e-ARC.

This was a good domestic thriller that kept me interested throughout. It follows a bunch of affluent neighbors who each have dark secrets they're trying to keep hidden while all pretending to like each other. Meanwhile, one of the husbands is murdered and everyone tries to figure out who the murderer is to no avail. After a few twists we find out who committed the crime and why, and the why is very interesting and quite disturbing.

this was such a good thriller novel, it had what I was looking for from this type of story. I enjoyed the way Melissa Adelman wrote this and thought it was a well thought out story. The characters worked well in this situation and glad I was able to read this.

"I’d followed along behind, cradling Carter and qualifying everything he said. The half-empty rooms will get filled, just as soon as our savings recover from all those repairs. Don’t mind the yellow acrylic shower liner in the guest bath, all the bathrooms need to be redone. The utility bills might kill us this summer, what with five thousand drafty square feet to cool. What were we thinking."

3.8
Despite every single character being just a bit unpleasant, this is surprisingly readable - if a little slow to start.

A thriller that kept me captivated throughout, but got super weird at the end. The twists were certainly unexpected! I sometimes had trouble keeping the 2 main stories separate, but the ending does a good job of explaining everything.
