My younger students enjoyed this book the most. They acted along with the story without me prompting them. They had fun pretending to be a monster. My older students enjoyed it, but were not as engaged.

On the sillier side of things, this is one of those books where the character talks directly to the reader – even to the extent he orders the book to be over and done with halfway through. ‘He’ is a monster, a googly-eyed, big-tailed, reptilian monster with mahoosive spectacles. And he’s looking for another scary monster to be scary and monstrous with. But the whole game – and book – will be up if we don’t fit his requirements. Beyond what I suppose is a bit of a twist, the book has little going for it except for the meta approach about it directly talking to us, and allegedly reacting to us reacting to it. Three and a half stars, as it’s perfectly acceptable – but never an essential purchase.

Are You a Monster by Guilherme Karsten - 4/5

Are You a Monster is a cute story where a monster is trying to determine if the reader is a monster or not. I read this with my 5- and 7-year-old, they enjoyed all the action and sound cues that were throughout. We loved how interactive the storyline was for the children and they had the giggles when the ending came. I do feel as if the ending was fast and forced, but it did not take away from the Childrens experience.

Incredibly cute, and absolutely would make a wonderful read-along book, especially for a group. Highly recommend to teachers and librarians, especially.

Looking for a book to read with your little one that is engaging, interactive and hilarious? Are You A Monster by Guilherme Karsten is sure to have your little one giggling with excitement! The best part of this story is that it allows children to get up and play a part. They can stomp around, get their pointy monster tails swinging about and their bulgy eyes searching for other monsters in the room. Oh, and how about using their loud monster voices! So much fun for all the ages, but especially your wee ones. Keep an eye out in your favourite book store this February 20th.

Are you a monster? by Guilherme Karsten was absolutely adorable! I highly recommend this title for parents and libraries and it will have both parents and children giggling aloud. This book is very interactive and you follow along with a monster that is trying to figure out if you might just happen to be one too. As you begin to narrow down are common features that monsters display along with actions you will laugh out loud at this adorable and hilarious book.

I loved this book! I really enjoyed the unique main character and all of the interactive aspects. The book would be great for a Storytime as it's interesting and just the right amount of interactive! Can't wait to use it!

A lovely interactive read around book for little ones. Encourages them to find their inner monster and have some fun. Lovely illustrations, nice and colourful. It has lots of ways to change your voice and make it fun for the children. I can imagine this would be a great whole class fun time book to get them all on their feet showing off their inner monsters.

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Picture books are so awesome! This one fits in everything I wanted.

It's interactive.
The kids are going to laugh.
It's got the perfect amount of "horror" for kids.
(Which means it's more funny than scary but the idea of monsters gives them the thrill they want.)

If you have a little monster, they're going to love this book too!

Check it out and see if you're a monster.

Are You a Monster? by Guilherme Karsten is an interactive read aloud reminiscent of The Monster at the End of This Book and Go Away Big Green Monster. If you're looking for something similar to those books or just a new interactive read aloud, Are You a Monster? should meet your needs.

In this book, a monster is looking for a monster buddy to do scary things with. The monster proceeds to question the reader to find out if they're a monster too. Initially, they determine that the reader is NOT a monster, but then they have second thoughts. There are plenty of opportunities for those reading aloud to add dramatic flair to their reading and for young children to get involved by responding to parts of the story.

I would recommend this book to parents and caregivers that are looking for an entertaining story to share with children. It also has a lot of potential as a storytime or classroom read aloud for teachers and librarians.

Adorable, interactive story. A monster is speaking directly to the reader asking if they are a monster. The book goes through differences asking if the reader has a tail or scaly skin. Then goes through similarities like show me your eyes, teeth and hear you roar. I could have a fun time reading this to younger readers. This allows for playful interaction and is silly fun. The illustrations add to the story. I would buy for an elementary school library. Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Children’s Books, Happy Yak for a temporary eARC in exchange for a review.

I am reviewing this book together with my 7 year old daughter.

We really liked Are You a Monster? My daughter was very engaged by the story and got involved in the actions and directions. She laughed a lot at the end.

We both really liked the illustrations, they were beautifully done and again very engaging.

This is such a cute book. The monster is so big and scary until the reader is bigger and scarier. This would be a really fun book to have a group of kids read along. Highly recommend this book for home libraries and day cares, kindergarten classes, and elementary schools.

A simple, imaginative, interactive read-aloud to help kids move about and be a little loud while working on “r” sounds and having fun. Illustrations help young readers learn monster body parts and easy to follow directions help kids realize that not everything novel and new is scary. Perfect for a classroom read aloud to start discussion about overcoming fears and making friends.

Little Monster is looking for scary things. Nothing scares him! He asks the reader if they are a monster. (I LOVE picture books that have a conversation with the reader. They make excellent interactive read alouds with a group). The reader must show the monster whether they are or are not a monster. Tail? Nails? Eyes? The reader must decide if they really are a monster.

Cute but simple illustrations. I loved this book.
