History in images: the life of dietrich bonhoeffer presented in short passages and suggestive illustrations.
The text is adapted to little children (5-8 yo), not much details that could bring worry or heaviness in their heart, but enough to understand the facts.
Wonderful book!

Beautiful book describing the life of a Christian martyr that more people should know. This book covers a sensitive subject in a matter accessible and understandable to children. The illustrations are lovely and the use of the sheepdog as the storyteller is lovely.

I have read several Dietrich Bonhoeffer books for adults and this is a child friendly version of Bonhoeffer. It is still very serious as Bonhoeffer gave up his life for the truth against the tyrannical rule of the Nazi regime.

It was an interesting book that shared how his family was able to fool the prison guards with important information about the war. Bonhoeffer's faith in terrible times where he lost his rights and still held on to faith. It is a great discussion for mature children and so necessary. Bonhoeffer was about the truth and believed that God was the source of all truth. Lessons we can all learn.

A special thank you to B&H Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review

This book merges two goals in an interesting way. It wants be 1) a fun children's book that tells a sad story about WWII, and the German underground church in a simple way that small children will understand and 2) a children's book featuring Shep the Sheep-Dog, which I assume to be a recurring character in B&H children's books.
It cultivates something interesting through this mix. Readers get Bonhoeffer's story in a simplified form that works, but the sheepdog themes becomes a recurring theme throughout the text (Jesus as the Good Shepherd, comparing Bonhoeffer to a good sheepdog watching out for evil wolves). It's short, engaging, and succeeds as both a history lesson and an inspiring children's story.

Bonhoeffer’s story is being brought to the forefront of historical conversations about the Christian tradition in the face of such trying times in world history. His sacrifice and character should never be forgotten and this book will keep generations honoring his memory and learning from his life. The illustrations are amazing and tactfully address some of the more upsetting parts in a way children can process. Absolutely recommend!

Thank you, NetGalley!
