A dual review this morning.

My 10 year old daughter is the youngest "Rebel Girl" in our family and she was excited to see this new book. As one of her most favorite things is music, she read it all in one sitting. My daughter was glad to see so many familiar faces, not just in the 25 women selected, but also the ones from the "Meet More Rebels" section at the back of the book. She was intrigued by a several "new" suggestions and no doubt will add them to her ever-growing list of musicians to listen to.

As for myself, an old school "Rebel Girl," I saw many of the icons I grew up with. I have shared these with all of my children. There were newer artists I have discovered through social media (Nandi Bushell, for one) and others my youngest and her sisters have shared with ME.

A great addition to the Rebel Girls series, 4 thumbs up.

I enjoyed this book, It gave a good overview of various girls/women rock stars from various locations and time periods. I thought it gave a good variety. In the end, there are even references to other rock stars that were discussed in other editions of Rebel Girls. I especially recommend this to music lovers or music teachers.

I love the Rebel Girl books and this one is no exception. Consider giving to this as a gift to boys and girls to inspire and educate. Each of the women featured has a real life story of talent and hard work. I love the diversity of the musicians featured and the range of music they represent.

My daughter loves the rebel girl books and this is a very interesting one for here because she loves listening to music and there were some new news for her in this book.

Serendipity.

Today (as I type) is Dolly Parton's birthday. As a result, although I found each of the 25 stories within fascinating, I've chosen to focus on Dolly Parton. Her history is certainly well known. She's an icon. Instantly recognized. Who'd have thought the little girl singing on her family's front porch to entertain her family would grow up to grace the fanciest stages of the world? Or that a movie would be made of a song she scribbled the lyrics to on the back of an ol' receipt? Yet, most know the story behind "The Coat of Many Colors".

As a former teacher, however, as much as I enjoy her music, it's her ability to use her hard-scramble background to inspire her to help others that inspires me. Realizing the limits being unable to read well had put on her parents, she found a way to insure children who might not otherwise be exposed to the wonders of reading have books in their hands.

The others showcased are equally deserving. It's an interesting mix, ranging from Ella Fizgerald, who did a stint in reform school, to the likes of four strangers brought together to form Blackpink. Then there's Joni Mitchell, who got in trouble during piano lessons for making up her own melodies and would later suffer from polio. Or, how about the artist born on the edges of the Sahara Desert? Like some of the others included, I must admit to never having known about her or her group, Les Filles De Illighdad.

Thanks #NetGalley and #RebelGirls for helping rectify that omission. They all have a story worth knowing. Who knows, someone reading this might even be inspired to make a future edition of this book. Music is a universal language, after all.

This book touches on 25 women in music, ranging from different jobs (like music producer Wondagurl to folk band Les Filles de Illighadad). The illustrations in this book are bright, eye-catching, and beautiful. Women from many different backgrounds participate in very different kinds of music from around the world.
As a musician, I find this book exciting because of its diversity. This book shows learners that musicians do not just do one job or look like one thing.
Each installation includes a one page illustration of the musician and one page of information about them typically about their upbringing and how they started making music, and why they continue to make music. This book is so beautiful.

Another great collection in the Rebel Girls series, this was a great collection of women's histories that were musicians. It works great for young girls as their short enough to get someone interested and then learn more about the women in this book.

Another great book in the Rebel Girls series! This one focuses on female musicians/musical groups. I like that it had both older and newer women to really span the generations!
