Thank you Netgalley, Guernica Editions and Annette Kussin for free e-ARC of "Secure Parent, Secure Child" in return of my honest review.
As a parent who’s always looking to grow and better support my children, I found Secure Parent, Secure Child to be an insightful and transformative read. I’m drawn to parenting books that offer practical guidance while also helping me understand myself more deeply—and this book did exactly that.
What stood out most was how the authors connected parental self-awareness with the emotional security of our children. It gave me a deeper understanding of my own behaviors, patterns, and triggers—insights that, in turn, help me show up more intentionally and compassionately for my kids. It’s not just about strategies for raising strong and resilient children; it’s about doing the inner work that allows us to be the kind of steady, attuned parents they need.
That said, I did find the language occasionally challenging. At times, the tone leaned more academic than practical, which may make it harder for some parents to stay engaged or apply the concepts easily. A simpler, more conversational tone would have made some of the excellent insights more accessible to a wider audience.
Still, this is a thoughtful and empowering book that encourages growth not just in our children, but in ourselves. I would highly recommend it to any parent committed to raising emotionally secure kids—and willing to look inward along the way.

Writing about attachment for readers is tricky, especially if you are writing a book for parents. I found the information in the book helpful yet what it lacked was some warmth, humor and understanding. Yes, grace with self was touched on but I wouldn't say it was an overarching writing style. Parents are coming to these works in a vulnerable state with their own attachment trauma and can be turned off quickly by possible feelings of guilt or fear of damaging their own children that I could see them putting this book down sooner rather than later.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
