I love London and have traveled there a lot and lived there for a semester in college. I have looked up the filming locations of several tv shows and movies and made it a point to visit. This book organizes the sites in London in the first section by movie (individual movies up until 2021(?)) and then by subcategory (James Bond, Hollywood (still trying to figure out how this category was different from the individual movies), Bollywood. The last section is themed tours like blue spot locations and historical cinemas. The book purposefully does not include maps, but I do not advise that anyone make a plan of visiting the locations without first plotting out where each location is because otherwise you will be crisscrossing London. The listings have the street address and a brief paragraph about how the location was used in the respective film. I found this to be a useful guide, but I would suggest flipping through the book to see if the movie you're interested in finding the locations for is included. Some movies have multiple pages of sites while others have one or two locations.

If you love movies and enjoy traveling this guide is for you. This is a very comprehensive guide that gives a movie and then mentions more than one location from that movie that you can go check out. It also give tours based off the type of landmarks, say breweries or churches, it will give a tour of breweries and churches and what movies they were from as you move from one to the next.

The Movie Lovers Guide to London is a brilliant wee book.

I really enjoyed this book as it was clear and concise. It has a short history of british cinema at the start then lots of great ideas for places to go and see from movies. It also has tours that you can go on as a planned trip while you are in the capital.

I loved that it had a whole chapter on James Bond places of interest. Loves the photos it had as well. It would be great to have to plan a city break round the tour areas.

I had a digital copy of the book but I think if I was going on a trip I would have preferred a physical copy. But then thats maybe my age showing!!!

Thanks to Netgalley and Pen and Sword for the ARC. This review is my own opinion.

Will add amazon review once the book is published.

I wish the photos included not only were captioned with the name of the place- but with the name of the movie. Some were not on the same page spread and it made it difficult to flip back and forth trying to figure out what place went to which movie. I like the organization overall- it made it easy to find the movie I was looking for and had locations for each. It is hard to put a place to a movie location without a picture .

Thank you to the publisher, author and NG for a copy of this book in exchange for honest feedback. This book is essentially a list of movies followed by scenes described with accompanying locations in London where they took place on film. Some pictures are included.

Personally, I think this book could have been improved by either a thematic organization such as “action movies, children’s movies” etc then broke into alphabetical order like the book is now. As it stands, it’s just a long list of movies and you don’t really know what to expect in terms of range or genres. Likewise, travel photography of movie locations is a big interest for many people nowadays so lists like these exist online — making this book stand out more against the free online info could be something like 1) more pictures, 2) more attractive or engaging layout, 3) clearer organization of info so a reader knows where to flip if they have a specific interest.

I don’t think this book stands against some of the others I’ve read through with similar content — it would’ve benefited from a bit more effort in layout and design. The information is fine and it’s a good idea, but execution is an important factor.

What a fun concept for a travel book!

It's no secret how much I love London and I've been very fortunate to visit it on multiple occasions. In the lead-up to my trips, I would reference Pinterest, photography books, and TikTok as a way of garnering inspiration on what to do and see while in the city, steering clear of the stereotypical travel books and tourist sites. I would want to experience the city as a member of the city, not someone who is just passing through. This book allows a new perspective on what to see while in the city, the sites and sets of films that are set in the city including Notting Hill, Harry Potter, Mary Poppin's Return, and The King's Speech.

I plan to reference this book next time I'm planning a trip to London.

Thank you to NetGalley and Pen & Sword, White Owl for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is for the traveler who is also a movie lover. London is full of iconic locations that have been featured in so many movies. The first half of the book covers specific movies and gives a location of where certain scenes in each movie were filmed. The films include old movies to present day. The book is indexed so you can find specific films quickly. The second part of the book covers themed sites like bars, cemeteries, theaters and areas like Knotting Hill or Southwark. Through out the book are stock photos of iconic locations or specific sites mentioned. Of course some sites are used in several different movies.

The book includes addresses and postal codes to help find locations using GPS. It intentionally does not provide maps. Without maps you’ll need to rely on smart phones to figure out bus or tube routes to locations. Also shots in the same movie may not be close together and you run the risk of continually criss-crossing the city. I love when my travels include some pop culture. My favorite trip to England included finding all of the sites I could visit that were used in Harry Potter films and Downton Abbey. Of course historic castles and manor houses are always on my list of places to visit. But having a tie in to pop culture made the visits more memorable.

This is a very informative film location guide. It is specific for London and does not cover the country as a whole. Also while it includes several films I was familiar with it isn’t all inclusive. Be sure if you are interested in a specific film that it is included in the book. Thank you to NetGalley and Pen & Sword, White Owl for an ARC in exchange for a review. (3.5 Stars)

I received a free copy of, The Movie Lover's Guide to London, by Charlotte Booth, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I wish that they had more of these book, in different country's. This is a great book, it has so many movies that were made in London, The King's Speech, Notting Hill, Mary Poppin's Return, and so much more. It brought back so many movie memories. A great read.

It was an interesting and informative read and the synopsis pretty well captures what the book is about. I don’t think the book was intended to be read cover to cover so I mostly flipped through to see what movies were included and how the book was organized and I found it clear and easy to understand and as a movie lover I’m sure I’ll pick it up the next time I visit London as it would be MUCH easier to refer to rather than trying to google my fav movie locations.

The forward / how to use introduction was valuable as it helped me understand how the book was to be used and what the book is intending to be AND not intending to be. The author was intentional in not including maps, but I personally would have found a few maps would have broken it up the text a bit. I appreciated the pictures and it’s obvious A LOT of research has gone into writing this. I particularly like the modern additions such as postal codes so that entire areas can just be plugged into GPS easily.
Also appreciated is the clear index that lists both all the movies contained in the book, and areas of London my postcode.

Thank you to Pen & Sword, White Owl and NetGalley for the advanced copy to read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A great guide for film lovers. I am a film fan and have read quite a few film location guides. All of them have been a collection of locations I could have easily found with a bit of googling. This guide is different. The amount of detail for each location I feel can only be found by watching the film and then going out and looking. The first half of the guide takes you through the London locations by film in the order that they appear in the film, with a brief description of the scene. No maps, but an exact postcode for finding the location on a phone. The second half of the book takes you on walking tours of areas pinpointing locations for all the films that were filmed in the area. I think that this is the best film location guide that I have seen. I love it.

I really liked the way this book was set out and was almost tempted to rerurn some of the movies to have the visuals while reading the book but got so engrossed in the text. Absolutely fascinating and when next in London will use this as my guidebook. Will buy this for movie buff pals too.

This is a really beautiful coffee table book for anyone who loves the movies and wants to explore London in a different way. Not only are popular landmarks from films discussed but there are also a number of tours laid out in the book which was my favourite part and I’m looking forward to the cemetery tour next time I’m in London.

I am rather on the fence about his book because I am enough of a geek to look up where things are filmed, especially if they show up in many, many places and you start to recognize them. (Example: Lancaster House, Stable Yard, St James's, Westminster, Greater London, England, UK is a filming location that pops up all the time!

This is more of a reference book that lists the movies and them their locations. There are very few photos and I would have LOVED a map or two that show where they were in the entirety of the movie.

Definitely for the movie geek, but enjoyable and appealing to the "right people".

The Movie Lovers Guide to London is a helpful, informative tool for anyone who enjoys cinema and wants to explore its history in London. As someone who has lived in London, I really enjoyed reminiscing on favourite places and learning new things about the city. This book gives you all of the information it promises in the title, it’s clear and easy to navigate by movie, in alphabetical order. It has a themed section if you want to focus on a certain setting such as pubs or churches. It also lists all of the postcode should you wish to just focus on one area of town. The introduction was very long but I enjoyed the how to use this book guide. I know the author didn’t want the book to be full of maps but I think a few small maps or drawings could have broken up the text and really personalised it. If you’re a cinema buff heading to London I would 100% recommend this guide.

Thank you to NetGalley and Pen&Sword/ White Owl for this advance review copy.

I absolutely loved this book! As a huge movie lover and romance fanatic I loved reading abt my favorite places from films I’ve loved over the years. It was much more comprehensive than I thought it would be. Loved it!

e past 130 years following the invention of the moving image.

Do you want to follow in the footsteps of Paddington, James Bond and Dorian Gray? Do you want to kiss in front of the blue door? Or look for the tomb of the resurrected Lord Blackwood? Or do you want to know where Richard Burton lived? Or where you can actually buy jewellery which was in the movies?

If you do, then you’re in the right place.

London has been a draw for filmmakers for decades, and this book guides you through the locations, in the shadow of some of your favourite movies.

Take a tour by movie, go on a movie pub crawl, a leisurely stroll through cemeteries with connections to the movies or create your own tour by postcode. This book will allow you to visit new parts of London but with the familiarity of a well-loved film.

With more than 500 movie locations from 91 films covering more than six decades of movie making and more than 100 images, this book will have something for everyone and will show you London in a new, sparkling, glamourous light.

This book reads as a very straightforward guide to London’s spots that have been shown in films without much extra writing involved. It would make a great guide for someone going there on vacation who was interested in walking where their favorite characters have walked.

The guide is broken into two parts. The first part is alphabetically listed by movie title, and the second gives suggested touring options. I found the suggested tours to be a better laid out section, as it was helpful to have an idea of which places to visit together.

There are no maps in this book, which I feel would have helped to show where the sites were in relation to one another. My other complaint is the lack of pictures. There are some, but this would have been a fun book to have a picture from the movie vs the location in real life and I believe I was expecting to have more to look at.

Thank you to Pen & Sword for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

This book is more of a reference book than something you can read in one sitting.
The films are listed in alphabetical order and then the locations are listed under that heading. So I suppose you would need to look up the films specifically rather than looking up the locations (which I would have preferred) However, towards the back of the book it is in location order - but this isn't the main bulk of the book.

The photography is beautiful - although it does paint London to be very sunny - not many (if any) grey shots - so not particularly represented of the London I know. I think London is beautiful though, no matter the weather FYI.

This book would make a great gift for any film lover, or someone coming on a trip to London from overseas! A different kind of tourist guide.

I’ve been to London a few times, but each time I come home and think of a dozen more places I should check out if/when I return to the city. This book had me adding a few more of those spots to the running list in my phone!

Thanks NetGalley and Pen & Sword/White Owl for this Advance Review Copy. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I love movies and I would love to visit the locations where some iconic scenes were shot. (Notting Hill’s bookshop or blue door anyone?) This book is not a full guide to all movies ever shot in London, but it does list some great spots from a lot of films: James Bond, Harry Potter, Notting Hill, Paddington, Mission Impossible and many, many more. From British films to Hollywood to Bollywood. Both new and old.

You can find locations listed per movie, but you can also find tours per area, which will take you past filming locations from several films in one particular area. Lastly this book also has a few themed tours like “pubs” or “churches” that were film locations.

I imagine this book (like any detailed travel book) might need an updated version every few years. The locations themselves obviously don’t move, but sentences like “shop XYZ is located here now” will no longer accurately describe a location once a new business moves in. The photos might also become a bit outdated in a few years.

The book’s design is very no-frills (both in design and text), which did not make it particularly appealing to me personally. But it does make for a clear and informative guide. A big down side is that it contains no maps. In today’s world where we all have maps and navigation on our phone I can see why they chose not to waste space with maps…but it does make the pages look even more plain and I think it would have been helpful had there been some small zoomed-in maps of some areas. If only to get you from the bus stop/tube station to the actual spot.

The guide does list a few of my fave movies (Notting Hill and Love Actually), but I’d advise you to see if it contains your favorites too. Like I said, it’s not a complete list, but it does contain a lot of great films/locations.

I can’t wait to visit London again and check out some of the places I probably would not have know about without this book.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of The Movie Lover's Guide to London.

I went to London years ago and hope to return soon. It's a vibrant city filled with amazing museums, shops, culture, art, and people.

The Movie Lover's Guide to London doesn't do this great city justice.

It's just a bunch of locations from a wide array of movies (the only positive aspect of this book).

There's practically little to no fun facts or trivia about the locations, just long, boring lists.

I'd recommend just going to London, booking a tour and/or Googling the info you're looking for and sightseeing on your own.
