Decent take on the science fiction genre, definitely curious to see where the author goes from here on out. Hoping for more things similar to it.

this was such a great concept for a scifi and fantasy genre novel. I was hooked from the first page and thought it was uniquely done. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and their world. Jason Davis does a great job in telling the story and it was written really well. I'm excited to read more from Jason Davis.

“A doll leg would be a nice touch,” he said with a private smile, futzing with the arrangement. “Maybe I’ll just go find a red shoe at Goodwill.” He pictured the gal behind the counter blinking in confusion at him. “No, I really do need just one.”

Usually, the world of a science fiction novel is one of the strangest aspects of a story. When dealing with a main character who suffers from delusions, however, it opens the reader up to things far stranger than the setting itself.

There was A LOT packed into this book. The carousel of genres just kept spinning and spinning - sometimes in a fun way, sometimes in a "What the hell am I even reading?" way. I will say that the writing style definitely pairs with the mentally unstable main character's point of view (his internal dialogue felt disjointed at times, which worked well amidst the delusions/memories he had), but I found myself taken out of the story countless times due to the abundance of "purple prose". So many descriptions felt unnecessarily wordy and pretentious, to the point where I completely lost track of what was supposed to be happening in the story.

I'd say this book could use some editing overall. The plot felt bogged down and convoluted, and the pacing was off - I found myself having to take a break because of how much was going on, yet I was only at page 54. By page 252, I felt like I was reading an entirely different book just because everything had been flipped on its head in the strangest way.

There are some beautiful moments of a mirror being held up to humanity and the illusions we create for ourselves. The story is definitely a journey, just be careful not to cut your feet on all the rocks.
