When You're Dying is a superb psychological thriller that keeps getting more exciting and puzzling with each page turned. I loved the characters and their involvement in the mystery and how it all neatly fit into the baffling thriller. Thanks so much for the advanced reader copy.

Whoa,my emotions are ALL over the place!!! Wow!!! Wow!!! Wow!!! This book is a total page-turner and will keep you guessing with every page. I love this incredible thriller. The plot was ingenious and I really like the characters as well. If you’re looking for a fast pace story that you can get swept into fairly quickly this is the book for you.

When you’re dying, a lot goes through your mind. Who will notice that you’re gone? What do you have left to lose? When you’re dying is a thrilling, suspenseful book about Verity Casmere and her struggle to find her sister, Ashlee, before she takes her last breath. Verity’s cancer has metastasized and she doesn’t want to spend her last days wondering what had happened to her sister who disappeared months before. She has one main suspect on her list, Dale Carmot, the hot-shot billionaire who was the last to see her. She begins investigating and later finds herself facing Dale alone in his home. He locks her in to find out why she was following him but other suspicious circumstances lead to them both confronting each other on the roof of his house. With one wrong move, both of them went tumbling down to the ground below. Oscar De La Nuit is a psychiatrist that was called on to check on both Dale and Verity after their near-death experience. His secrets are intertwined with those of Verity without him even knowing.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was kind of slow but in a way that entices you. I would have to give this a 4-star rating though because I am not a patient person and whenever the truth got eluded from me, I would nearly pull my hair out lol. I was able to relate to both characters, Verity and Oscar because they both suffered in their own ways. I can’t say that the book enthralled me so much because normally I wouldn’t put a book down unless I pass out but sometimes I would not feel like completing it. I don’t know why I felt that way exactly but I felt that some chapters were prolonging the plot without any real reason behind them. I like how we got to know Verity during her inner monologues, especially when she was locked in at Dale’s house.

The ending though, was not what I expected. I could not believe the ending. It was the biggest plot twist and I can’t wrap my head around why he would do that. I did doubt him for a small bit but not as whom he came out to be. Oh, one thing that drove me crazy was that the ending was divided into perhaps the last ten chapters, and every time I would turn one chapter and find it in another’s POV, my heart rate would speed up and my irritability would begin to tremble. I need to know and I need to know fast 😸. I think this is partly on me but I can’t stand inner monologues when the shit is hitting the fan 😹

I want to thank BookSirens and NetGalley for sending this free Advanced Reader’s copy to me 💞

Not very good. The prose is mediocre and there are logic problems with the plot. I feel like it could be pretty good but it still needs major editing. Typos as well.

I really liked this sequel! I think I preferred it to the first actually which can be quite rare! I liked getting to know more of Oscar’s backstory as well as the new characters you got to meet. There were surprises in the plot that kept me on my toes. Would definitely read again! Thank you to the publisher for providing an ARC through NetGalley!

I was immediately pulled into the story by the exciting first chapter and how well written it is, very easy to read and flows naturally. The two main characters are Verity and Oscar. Verity is coping with not only learning she has terminal cancer but also that her sister is missing and presumed dead or close to it. Oscar is a psychiatrist who is trying to help Verity and is also trying to figure out what the truth is between some very conflicting stories. It had me second guessing myself along the way wondering who to believe. It's very engaging and the characters are very well developed, felt real, and were introduced naturally. Each chapter was fun to read in the alternating perspective between Verity and Oscar but always lets you know whose perspective it is from and when in the story it takes place. I felt it added to the anticipation and was not in any way confusing. There was also enough information so that I COULD figure out the ending, got some of it right, but was surprised at the actual ending. A very satisfying read and I would definitely read more from this author. Might have to go pick up the first one in the series. Obviously you don't have to read them in order to understand what's going on and who the characters are.

I received this ARC from NetGalley, MQ Webb and TBR Press for an honest review. This is a very interesting and intriguing mystery with many different misleading and confusing twists. Verity Casmere is dying of Cancer and her last wish is to find her missing sister, Ashlee. Ashlee suddenly disappeared when she was leaving a fundraising gala. The two sisters went together, but, were going to come home separately after they had an argument. Ashlee never made it home! Forensic Psychiatrist, Oscar de la Nuit has decided to help Verity find out what happened to her sister because there were several conflicting opinions of what happened to Ashlee when she left the gala. Oscar’s troubled childhood becomes another plot in the story.

Verity is on the search to find of what happened to her sister Ashlee. Verity believes she has been either kidnapped or murdered by someone, and she might know who. verity wants peace because she dies, as she just has breast cancer.

Story is told between 2 POVs, Verity and her therapist Oscar.

This was an absolute page turner. Couldn’t stop turning (or tapping) to find out what happens next.

Thank you @netgalley and #ibpa for the ARC. Would definitely recommend.

Make sure you pick up your copy on March 23rd, 2023 for this wonderful thriller read.

The second book in the Oscar de la Nuit series. I have not read the first book and I believe although they involved the same character they can probably be read as stand alone as the storylines are completely different. I also did not feel like there were any plot holes or questions from not having read the first.

Verity Casmere has been told she has metastasized breast cancer and she has months to live. She is determined to use her remaining time on earth investigating what truly happened to her sister Ashlee. Ashlee has been missing, and it's believed that she may have been murdered, however; no body was ever found. Forensic psychiatrist Oscar de la Nuit agrees to help Verity find out the truth. The truth brings secrets that no one saw coming.

This book was fast paced and intriguing. I could not wait to find out the ending, so much so that while I was on vacation in Vegas I went back to my hotel room to finish the last 45 minutes of the book.

Thanks to Netgalley and TBR press for a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fast paced and twisty tale about a woman who finds out she has terminal breast cancer and decides she must know what happened to her sister. I also read How to spot a psychopath. I did enjoy that one a little bit more but this sophomore novel is still a solid read at 3.5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read an early copy of this book

Verity Casmere just found out she's dying, but first, she wants to know what happened to her sister Ashlee so she can die in peace.
To find the answers she'll need to test her limits and ask some hard questions.

Wow. I couldn't put this down, I had to know what happened.
I was rooting for Verity from the start, always a little worried she would die before she found out what happened to her sister.
This was a fast paced, action packed thriller with more than one really great twist.
I'm looking forward to reading the next instalment in the Oscar de la Nuit series.

My thanks to Net Galley and IBPA for this EXCELLENT arc to review. This was my first read by this author.

Verity Casmere is dying of breast cancer and has one wish to find her missing sister Ashlee before she dies. However, Verity goes on a dangerous path to track someone she suspects that puts her and him in a dangerous situation, along with her psychiatrist Oscar that will bring about a twist you won't see coming. Told from a past and present POV.

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.

Verity Casmere is desperate to find her sister, Ashlee, who disappeared after a party a few months ago. The police insist she was murdered, but no body has been found, and Verity knows her sister would never disappear without a word. Verity needs to find answers and she doesn’t have much time left- Verity is dying, and she wants to find out what happened to her sister before she dies. With nothing left to lose, what is Verity willing to risk?
M.Q. Webb first stunned me with her debut thriller, “How to Spot a Psychopath”, the first novel featuring the psychologist Oscar de la Nuit, and I was left wanting more. Luckily, Webb delivered with the second novel, “When You’re Dying”.
The good news is that you do not have to read “Psychopath” in order to read “Dying”, although I strongly encourage it! The first novel introduces the reader to Oscar, with all of his past traumas and emotional scarring, yet the second novel is easy to understand without the background knowledge. Oscar serves as the psychologist who interviews Verity and ends up, unknowingly, assisting in the search for her sister. His relationships are explored a bit more in this novel, but again, it isn’t necessary to know Oscar to love him, and “Dying” can be read as a standalone.
Right from the first page, it is obvious Webb knows how to write a psychological page turner. There are twists left and right, with the final one hitting the reader right as the novel is coming to a close. “Dying” has some expected twists, but there are enough unexpected surprises to leave a reader guessing. The background characters are all just shady enough to leave suspicion, and Webb turned “Dying” into a pulse-pounding guessing game!

This was actually a good whodunit with a very novel setup for urgency. I generally liked the characters - every one has flaws, and they all have a deeper impact on those around them than you'd expect. One literary liberty that I take issue with is the behavior of a therapist/psychologist that accuses and leads his subject - that goes against everything in the psych handbook. It would have been more likely that he would have kept prompting and asking the same question in different ways until something was finally revealed. Ah, well, the story was still very complex, and the conclusion surprising. A twisty read that was fully engaging!

Verity has learned that her cancer is terminal. Now her sister, Ashley, is missing. She wants to know where Ashlee is before she dies. She believes she knows who is responsible. She wants him to tell her what happened to Ashlee. The story is told by two points of view. Verify and the psychiatrist she is seeing because of what happened after she confronted the man she believes knows .
It was a good quick moving book. I realized who was responsible early. I wish we knew what Verity and her sister argued about. I also wanted to know who Oscar's child's mother was.
Thank you, NetGalley, for this ARC!

Wow, this book was incredible! I love the multiple POV’s and the way the story is told in “then” and “now”. The plot had me hooked from the first page, I was unable to put the book down and finished in one setting. My only critique would be a few grammatical corrections and repetitive statements that could easily be corrected. I love this psychological thriller, clearly the author has strong knowledge of research in mental health. I would love to read more from this author!

I loved this and loved the way it was written with the "Then" and "Now" chapters. It was a real page turner and I was hooked from the beginning to the very end. This was such a great thriller I couldn't put it down.

Very twisty turny and an engaging read. Following Verity with her fuzzy memories, dangerous logic and subsequently risky actions is a ride. Girl stressed me out. Some of the things connected a little too well, like she got lucky. Sometimes there are just random things that happen and those should be included too.

Overall 3/5 stars. A little less than How to Spot a Psychopath, but I really like Oscar and would still follow his story.

...

Specifics and possible spoilers:
- Ch. 2 has a typo
- One issue I had was Verity's insistence on getting Dale investigated more if he'd already been acquitted (ch. 3). I understand for her own closure, but legally speaking he most likely can't be tried again sooo.... (I don't know where this takes place but many democratic countries have double jeopardy laws, with the exception of the UK apparently. Thanks Google!) And again, I get if it's just personal but like no one acknowledged that most likely the police don't have a lot of options due to his acquittal.
- Blasé seems overused. I noticed it in HTSAP too, but it was more here.
- Ch. 16: Dale opens the front door, and Verity sees the rug and shutters. Further down the page, Dale wiggles the key and opens the door again. ?
- Ch. 22: The deadbolt. I don't think this house was set up for kidnapping, and deadbolts are generally on the inside, not the outside. ?
Ch. 25; "and she hadn't been a mother to him for more years than he'd been alive" doesn't really make sense.
Honorable mention: I must know how the dog is! She's good, right?

I think my students will enjoy this fast paced mystery with likeable characters and gives us a good opportunity to discuss "what would you do if you knew you were dying soon" most of them won't be in such dramatic situations as the heroine but will give them food for thought

I loved this fast paced, action packed, who done it thriller! Verity finds out she has cancer and is haunted by the knowledge that her sister Ashlee is missing. Is Ashlee dead? If so she wants answers to who did it and why? She takes the investigation into her own hands and tries to track the killer. This puts her in harms way and makes for one great read.

I was never sure what was going to happen next or who the killer was until the end. This is second book by this author and I am hooked.
