The Deadlands series is one that I would recommend to fans of series like Warriors and Wings of Fire. As an adult, it reminds me of a slightly more grown-up version of The Land Before Time. The story centers on a band of young dinosaurs that are exiled from their respective herds and band together to survive while attempting to reveal a conspiracy. Young readers will love the adventures that the young dinosaurs face while dealing with their own personal and collective struggles. As a reader, I'm looking forward to seeing the continuation of this series and as a librarian, I think this series will help more children discover the joy of reading.

This is an excellent second installment to the Deadlands trilogy. I found the character depth to be particularly good for a middle grade novel. The war in Cretacea is simple enough for children to understand while still managing to have some nuance. I am impressed by the amount of depth that has been packed in to a children's novel about dinosaurs. Overall, I am anxiously awaiting the third installment.

Thank you to the author, publisher and netgalley for the free copy in exchange for my honest review.

The second installment is as thrilling as the first! I love all the characters especially Eleri, Tortha, and Zyre. This book is full of adventure and peril that captivates the reader. Perfect for a young reluctant reader. It's like Land Before Time grew up and took it up several notches on the awesome scale. The Grotto herd is still reeling from their near demise and the climatic battle with the carnivore kingdom who would see them all captured and turned into cattle for the slaughter, but internal struggles cause further damage to their chances of survival. Zyre's almost betrayal is a seriously sore spot for Tortha and Eleri is desperate to prove his value to his new found family which causes him to be reckless. On top of this there are many secrets that will have devistating results once revealed and the Carnivore kingdom is still strong enough to attack the other kingdoms and plotting a massacre of epic proportions. Can our plucky gang band together despite their differences to stop an attack even worse than the last and save a number of enslaved captives and possibly reverse their exiles? Wonderful story, fast paced, heart breaking at times, fun and enjoyable, often nail biting suspense. Much more than you would expect from a book about dinosaurs for young teens. An amazing accomplishment.

My son and I read this series together. He loves these books and cannot wait for the next one. Great series for middle graders who like exciting stories, but want something different than the usual magical kids stories.

These dinosaur books are the sleeper series of the last few years. For readers who Wings of Fire and love dinosaurs- they are the best of both worlds.

I feel like I’ve been seeing this series everywhere, and I’m not at all surprised. I had so much fun reading it. The story follows both Zyre (a small flying dinosaur) and Eleri (a small digging dinosaur) as they lead their herd toward a rumored sanctuary and an opportunity to sabotage the carnivorous dinosaurs’ plans.

Because Zyre was once hired to betray a member of the group, she feels she needs to earn the herd’s trust, and she goes to great lengths to do so. She’s tender and kind, but also very quick on her feet, and brave in the face of danger to her friends.

Eleri wrestles with unresolved issues between him and his brother. He doubts his ability to lead and to be brave and rushes into dangerous situations, trying to prove his worth to himself.

I’m not sure if you could read this one without having read the first book. There are places in the story that kind of bring readers up to speed, but there are also a lot of terms and references that aren’t fully explained in this book that would make sense if you’d read the first one.

I think readers who enjoy books about animals, such as the Warriors books, will love these dinosaur stories.

Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions my own.

I continue to enjoy this middle grade series. The outcasts have been found and have to leave the safety of the Grotto. While they are on the run the have to work hard to continue to trust each other and try and find a way to unite all the dinosaurs. The stakes are higher in this book then the last one. I will continue to read this series.

I was pleasantly surprised by this next book in the Deadland series as sometimes the second book is not as strong as the first one was. Full of action, adventure and heart--this series is not hard to sell to middle graders. I look forward to the next book in the series.

I really enjoyed this sequel!
Great characters and lots of action. Zyre's character arc is particularly interesting, and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!
This is a great book for a Dino loving middle grade reader. My 12 year old and I read it together and he really enjoyed it as well.

Thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Children's for an early copy for review.

Thank you NetGalley, Macmillan Children's Publishing Group, and Skye Melki-Wegner for the opportunity to read this e-ARC!

The Grotto Herd is back in this sequel to the Deadlands: Hunted! Book #2 is action-packed and full of twists and turns. The herd must come together to overcome some steep obstacles.

Eleri and Zyre are two of my favorite dinosaurs in this book. There was some violence, but it wasn't unnecessary. The twists definitely took me by surprise! Definitely recommend and can't wait for book #3!

This was a strong sequel in the Deadlands series, I enjoyed the dinosaurs aspect and that this had a great action-adventure elements going on. The characters felt like they were suppose to and worked with the first book overall. Skye Melki-Wegner does a great job in this book again and it left me excited to read more in this series.

Fantastic sequel! This series is incredibly well-written and poignant--the author isn't afraid to go into the brutalities of war. I also always appreciate how the author gives distinctive personalities and quirks to each character and even the new side characters.

Oh, I loved the old lesbian triceratops couple. Absolutely adorable! Also very snarky. This series is still perfect for Warrior Cats fans and Wings of Fire fans!
